| |  | NEW JERSEY: NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - While other teams made the most of the lockout-shortened season, the New Jersey Devils missed the playoffs a year after making the Stanley Cup finals.
There were injuries. There were slumps. It was not pretty.
But it was also only one part of the story. Then came the offseason.
Forward Ilya Kovalchuk stunned the team in July, by walking away from $77 million left on his 15-year contract to play in Russia. Technically, the 30-year-old retired. Realistically, he left the Devils without a star player. Forward David Clarkson left via free agency, as well, and so when New Jersey opens Oct. 3 at Pittsburgh, you will see some new faces in new places. | | BOSTON: BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Bruins were less than two minutes away from forcing a seventh game of the Stanley Cup finals. Now they must wait nearly seven months until the next postseason.
With the core of their team returning, the Bruins should reach the playoffs for the seventh straight season. And they took steps to secure their long-term future by signing center Patrice Bergeron and goalie Tuukka Rask to eight-year contracts and general manager Peter Chiarelli to a four-year extension.
Last season, the Bruins came close to their second championship in three years. They led Chicago 2-1 in Game 6 then allowed two goals in the last 76 seconds and the Blackhawks won 3-2 to take the Cup.

The New Jersey Devils continue to struggle through a rough start, bogged down by inconsistent goaltending.
Facing the Boston Bruins - who have dominated them in recent years - isn't likely to help matters.
Boston seeks its 12th win in 13 meetings and seventh straight at home in the series Saturday night when it faces the woeful Devils.
New Jersey (1-5-4) has only one win through its first 10 contests for the first time since losing 12 of 13 to open the 1983-84 season. The Devils, 0-5-2 on the road, beat the New York Rangers 4-0 last Saturday for their only victory.
The only other game in which their opponent didn't score at least three goals came Thursday versus Vancouver, but they still lost 3-2 in a shootout.
Cory Schneider, making his third straight start after Martin Brodeur stopped only 18 shots in a 5-2 loss at Ottawa on Oct. 17, had a shaky performance in net against his former team. He made 19 saves before allowing the lone shootout score.
"We played great, we deserved to win. Those guys worked their butts off and played mistake-free hockey," said Schneider, acquired for the No. 9 overall pick in June's entry draft. "I made two mistakes and they both end up in the back of the net. It's unacceptable on my part. So, I know I'm better than that, I have to be better than that, and I'll be better (next time)."
A day earlier, the 41-year-old Brodeur told reporters that Schneider had usurped him as the club's No. 1 goalie. Brodeur is 0-2-2 with a career-worst 3.40 goals-against average, compared to Schneider's 2.14 GAA.
Whereas Schneider won his lone career start versus the Bruins, stopping 36 shots in a 4-3 final Jan. 7, 2012, Brodeur has lost nine straight against them while posting a 3.32 GAA.
That drought for Brodeur has come during Boston's 11-1-0 run in this series, limiting the Devils to 18 goals. The Bruins (7-2-0) have won the last seven meetings, and New Jersey has dropped six in a row at Boston since a 2-1 shootout victory Nov. 27, 2009.
David Krejci has eight points in the last six matchups with the Devils, and he enters this one riding a six-game point streak.
Krejci tipped in the winner with 0.8 seconds left in a 2-1 home victory over San Jose on Thursday, dealing the Sharks their first regulation defeat. His 10 points are tied with Milan Lucic for the team lead.
Unlike New Jersey, Boston continues to get stellar goaltending from Tuukka Rask, who helped salvage a win despite a 39-17 shot disparity. Rask is 6-2-0 and tops the Eastern Conference with a 1.26 GAA.
"You want to try to be a good team, and teams try to find ways to win in different ways," Lucic said. "(Rask) made some huge stops, especially in the first period and also in the second to keep us in it."
Rask has yielded four goals in his last five games against the Devils, posting two shutouts.
Jarome Iginla recorded his first goal as a Bruin on Thursday after failing to score on 26 shots in his first eight games. It was his second-longest goal-less stretch to begin a season, only behind an 11-game drought in 1999-00.
"That was cool. It's been a while," Iginla said. "You always hope it's coming."
Iginla has five goals and nine assists in his last 14 games versus New Jersey.
