| | | MONTREAL: LAST SEASON: 46-28-8, 100 points; lost to New York Rangers in Eastern Conference final.
COACH: Michel Therrien, seventh season with Canadiens, 287-224-23-58.
ADDED: D Tom Gilbert, C Manny Malhotra, RW P.A. Parenteau, RW Jiri Sekac.
LOST: C Daniel Briere, RW Brian Gionta, D Josh Gorges, LW Thomas Vanek.
PLAYER TO WATCH: P.K. Subban: The 43rd overall pick in the 2007 draft solidified his status as a top-five defenseman in the NHL following a 2013-14 regular season in which he recorded 53 points (10 goals, 43 assists) in 82 games, and added another 11 (five goals and six assists) in 17 playoff games. And he isn't going anywhere. The Canadiens and Subban agreed to an eight-year, $72 million contract in the offseason.
OUTLOOK: The Canadiens earned the ire of playoff foes Boston and New York for on-ice antics and their off-ice loquaciousness. But teams don't dislike opponents who aren't good. The Canadiens are just that, and should find themselves in the playoffs come April. | | ARIZONA: LAST SEASON: 37-30-15, 89 points. Ninth overall in Western Conference.
COACH: Dave Tippett, fifth season with Arizona, 156-96-42; In 10th NHL season as coach, 427-252-107.
ADDED: C Sam Gagner, C Joe Vitale, RW B.J. Crombeen, G Devan Dubnyk.
LOST: RW Radim Vrbata, C Mike Ribeiro, D Derek Morris, LW Paul Bissonnette, G Thomas Greiss.
PLAYER TO WATCH: C Antoine Vermette. As Ribeiro struggled late last season, Vermette surged to the forefront as Arizona's top center. He led the Coyotes with 24 goals last season and is a superb two-way player - a perfect fit for Tippett's defense-first system. A bigger season could be on the horizon as the Coyotes lean on him more.
OUTLOOK: The Coyotes should contend for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Arizona lost captain Shane Doan for 12 games due to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and goalie Mike Smith was out the final 10 games with a knee injury. Even with the injuries, the Coyotes finished two points out of the West's final playoff spot. Stay relatively healthy and get back to their defensive ways, they might be in the mix again this season. |

*Canadiens-Coyotes Preview* ===========================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
Montreal (41-18-6) at Arizona (21-37-7), 7:00 p.m. EDT
Frustration continues to consume the Montreal Canadiens during an already rough four-game Western trip.
Looking to avoid being swept on the trek, the Canadiens face an Arizona Coyotes team on Saturday that's trying to build on its first victory in almost a month.
After being outscored 7-1 in losses at San Jose and Anaheim, Montreal (41-18-6) overcame a 2-0 first-period deficit Thursday at Los Angeles by scoring three straight before allowing the equalizer with 45 seconds left in regulation of a 4-3 shootout loss.
Though some Canadiens felt their rally to earn a point showed character, others believed the effort was uncharacteristic for a club that leads the Eastern Conference and has allowed 49 third-period goals - one of the lowest marks in the league.
"We've got to find a way to choke teams out. It's frustrating that we weren't able to," forward Max Pacioretty told the Canadiens' official website. "Every game writes its own story. We thought we came out slow, but we recouped pretty well and finally got some bounces. We used that for momentum. But, we were 45 seconds away from a two-point win in regulation. We can't let those things happen."
One point ahead of the New York Islanders and two up on Tampa Bay, Montreal will try to avoid losing four straight for the first time since Jan. 18-25 of last year.
In order to do so, it might need to improve a special teams unit that's killed only five of nine penalties on the trip and gone 1 for 12 on the power play over the last five contests.
Pacioretty, however, snapped a three-game goal drought with his 31st and David Desharnais added two assists to give him nine points in the last nine games.
"It's rough, we all wanted to see a 'W' on (Thursday), but do we have some positives going into our next game? For sure," defenseman P.K. Subban said.
After sitting Thursday, Carey Price could be in net looking to avoid a third straight defeat. He allowed six goals in the first two of the trip after posting a 1.20 goals-against average during his team-record, 10-game road winning streak.
Price is 6-0-0 with a 1.65 GAA against the Coyotes, last facing them in December 2013.
Backup Dustin Tokarski, who made 26 saves Thursday, stopped 29 shots during a 3-2 home loss to Arizona (21-37-7) on Feb. 1.
The Coyotes followed by winning two of the next four but after a 3-2 shootout win at Chicago on Feb. 9, dropped 10 straight before Thursday's 3-2 shootout win over Vancouver.
"Winning is fun," coach Dave Tippett told the Coyotes' official website. "If you're miserable winning, then you're just miserable all the time."
Mike Smith made 32 saves and Sam Gagner scored the only goal of the shootout as Arizona overcame blowing a 2-0 lead to snap a nine-game skid at home, where it hadn't won since Jan. 8.
"It's big to finally win a game at home - win a game, period," veteran forward Shane Doan said.
Arizona rookie Tobias Rieder has a goal in two straight games after not recording a point in his previous 12 contests.
Teammate Lauri Korpikoski scored twice against the Canadiens last month but has only two assists in 15 games since then.
Montreal's Alex Galchenyuk also scored twice in that game and has three goals in the last two versus Arizona.
