KEY GAME INFORMATION
ANAHEIM: LAST SEASON: 54-20-8, 116 points. Won Pacific Division. Lost to Los Angeles in second round of playoffs.
COACH: Bruce Boudreau, 4th season with Ducks, 111-55-22; 8th overall in NHL.
ADDED: C Ryan Kesler, C Nate Thompson, D Clayton Stoner, LW Dany Heatley.
LOST: G Jonas Hiller, RW Teemu Selanne, C Saku Koivu, C Nick Bonino, C Mathieu Perreault, C Daniel Winnik, D Luca Sbisa, D Stephane Robidas.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Devante Smith-Pelly. After bouncing between the NHL and the minors for three years, the speedy, tough-nosed right wing is poised to build on his breakthrough effort as Anaheim's top goal-scorer in the postseason. He's likely to get a chance to contribute on the deep Ducks' top three lines.
OUTLOOK: Kesler and Thompson make the Ducks tougher down the middle, and this deep, balanced club should be in position to contend for the Stanley Cup again. Anaheim is taking its biggest risk in net, hoping Frederik Andersen and prospect John Gibson are ready for full-time NHL duty.
ARIZONA: LAST SEASON: 37-30-15, 89 points. Ninth overall in Western Conference.
COACH: Dave Tippett, fifth season with Arizona, 156-96-42; In 10th NHL season as coach, 427-252-107.
ADDED: C Sam Gagner, C Joe Vitale, RW B.J. Crombeen, G Devan Dubnyk.
LOST: RW Radim Vrbata, C Mike Ribeiro, D Derek Morris, LW Paul Bissonnette, G Thomas Greiss.
PLAYER TO WATCH: C Antoine Vermette. As Ribeiro struggled late last season, Vermette surged to the forefront as Arizona's top center. He led the Coyotes with 24 goals last season and is a superb two-way player - a perfect fit for Tippett's defense-first system. A bigger season could be on the horizon as the Coyotes lean on him more.
OUTLOOK: The Coyotes should contend for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Arizona lost captain Shane Doan for 12 games due to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and goalie Mike Smith was out the final 10 games with a knee injury. Even with the injuries, the Coyotes finished two points out of the West's final playoff spot. Stay relatively healthy and get back to their defensive ways, they might be in the mix again this season.

*Ducks-Coyotes Preview* =======================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Anaheim (23-8-5) at Arizona (12-18-4), 8:00 p.m. EDT

The Anaheim Ducks' recent ability to thrive in close games has them heading out of the Christmas break with the most points in the league.

The Ducks will seek to add to that total Saturday night while extending their dominance over the Arizona Coyotes.

After dropping two of three to finish a five-game trip, Anaheim (23-8-5) entered the break on a positive note with Monday's 3-2 overtime victory against San Jose. Cam Fowler scored the tying goal with 4:16 left in regulation and Ryan Kesler's sixth in nine games was the winner.

"We really wanted this one going into a break," Kesler said. "We've all been on the other side of this, when you lose and think about it for three days. So we're going to enjoy this one, re-energize and come back."

The Ducks, two points ahead of Eastern Conference-leading Pittsburgh, have earned 14 of their last 16 victories by one goal or in a shootout. They've won their last 10 games that have been decided in those ways - including a 2-1 home victory over Arizona on Nov. 23 - and that's helped them build a three-point lead over Chicago in the West and an eight-point advantage over San Jose in the Pacific Division.

"We feel when we play our brand of hockey, we're a difficult group to contend with," Fowler said.

Anaheim, 9-2-0 this month, is 6-0-1 in the last seven matchups with Arizona (12-18-14).

The Coyotes are 3-8-2 in their last 13 - a stretch that began with the loss in Orange County. Arizona has only beaten Edmonton during that stretch and routed the league's last-place team 5-1 on Tuesday in its final game before the break.

Sam Gagner had two goals and two assists in the finale of a three-game road trip, helping the Coyotes to their best scoring performance since a 5-2 win in Edmonton on Dec. 1. Arizona totaled 13 goals in eight games in between.

"It's obviously a big win for us. Things haven't been going great," said Gagner, who had one goal and two assists in his previous 11 games. "It was just one of those nights where things just seem to go in for me. I haven't had a lot of that this year so I'll take it when I can get it."

Gagner and Mikkel Boedker each had shootout goals in a 3-2 victory in Anaheim on Nov. 7. Martin Hanzal, who tied a career high with three assists Tuesday, has five goals and 10 assists in his last 15 games against the Ducks.

Coyotes captain Shane Doan's 35 points (15 goals, 20 assists) in his last 34 matchups are easily his most against any opponent in the last seven seasons.

Anaheim captain Ryan Getzlaf has six goals and 14 assists in his last 12 games - giving him the most points in the league since Nov. 29 - and carries a season-high, six-game point streak into this matchup. He has five goals and seven assists in his past 10 games in the series.

The Ducks have won in each of their last two visits to the Coyotes, who have been outscored 32-15 while going 1-6-3 in their last 10 home games. This is Anaheim's lone road game until Jan. 17.
