| SAN DIEGO: The defense was a disaster in San Diego last season, but things should improve despite the departure of S Eric Weddle. Third overall pick DE Joey Bosa will bring heat off the edge, and free agent CB Casey Heyward will help lock things down opposite CB Jason Verrett. Offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt is back in town, which has to make QB Philip Rivers happy'the last time Whisenhunt was OC, in 2013, he had one of his best seasons. RB Melvin Gordon should also be improved this season, as he had his knee operated on in the offseason and will be running behind an improved line. | | MINNESOTA: Minnesota has elite players at all levels of its defense, with DT Linval Joseph, LB Anthony Barr and S Harrison Smith each leading solid units. Although first-round selection WR Laquon Treadwell should emerge as QB Teddy Bridgewater's favorite target, new o-line acquisitions G Alex Boone and T Andre Smith both appear to be past their primes. Still, this Vikings team was an easy field goal away from advancing in the playoffs a year ago and is certainly good enough to make some noise in the NFC this year. |
