| |  | PHILADELPHIA: Philly has returned to a relatively balanced offensive attack, finishing middle of the pack in run/pass balance in 2011. The running game really took off after the arrival of offensive line guru Howard Mudd last season, and they're now one of the league's most effective zone-blocking teams. Head coach Andy Reid admitted that LeSean McCoy was overworked last season, so look for him to get closer to about 70 percent of the team's reps rather than the 80-plus percent he got last year. Either Dion Lewis, Bryce Brown or Chris Polk will pick up the rest. All four backs are capable of playing three downs. McCoy will get the vast majority of the team's red zone touches. The Eagles' West Coast is aggressive attacking downfield. Despite last year's issues, DeSean Jackson downfield is still this team's No. 1 option, especially when quarterback Michael Vick is able to buy time with his legs. Tight end Brent Celek emerged as a legitimate No. 2 target underneath, though Jeremy Maclin could have a bigger role now that he's entering training camp 100 percent healthy. Every once in awhile, they'll have a game plan specific to slot receiver Jason Avant, but his role will be limited as long as their top three pass catchers are healthy. They also feature McCoy and the backs heavily in the screen game. When they throw near the goal line, they look to run some sort of play-action or other misdirection and get the ball primarily to Celek. The loss of Asante Samuel hurts the Philadelphia defense, but plenty of talent remains in the secondary, most notably shutdown corners Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. There's also plenty of talent up front with DEs Jason Babin (18 sacks) and Trent Cole (11 sacks). Babin made a great decision following DL coach Jim Washburn back to Philly to play in the 'wide nine' formation, and it resulted in six multi-sack performances in 2011. Philly's blitz-happy scheme keeps defenses from doubling Babin, and the presence of Cole, one of the NFL's most consistent defensive linemen, helps open things up even more. The weakness of this defense in 2011 was the linebacking corps, which is where former Texans LB DeMeco Ryans comes in. His best years in Houston were as a 4-3 middle linebacker before the Texans switched to a 3-4 a year ago. A likely three-down 4-3 MLB in Philly, he's a solid bounce-back candidate and, as long as he can remain healthy, the productive middle man the Eagles have been lacking since Jeremiah Trotter. | | TAMPA BAY: The Bucs seem to be gearing up to do a lot of running this season. New head coach Greg Schiano oversaw a run-heavy team at Rutgers, and offensive line coach Bob Bostad oversaw Wisconsin's run-heavy power game among his previous jobs. They also added an elite left guard in Carl Nicks, a first-round back in Doug Martin and a great blocking wide receiver in Vincent Jackson. The Bucs will use primarily a zone-blocking scheme with a lot of inside runs. LeGarrette Blount and Martin will probably be close to a 50/50 share on early downs, with Martin taking all third down reps. While Blount will have his role greatly reduced between the 20's, he'll have a chance to keep goal line carries. New offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan's offense will be far more aggressive getting the ball downfield, which should be a nice match for Josh Freeman's arm strength and Jackson's downfield ball skills. The reads generally go deep-to-short and rarely side-to-side. So after Jackson, Freeman will more likely come down to Preston Parker than go across to Mike Williams. The Bucs also plan on using their backs in the passing game much more often, which is why they traded up into the first round to grab Martin. When Tampa throws in the red zone and down near the goal line, Jackson and Williams are the team's most capable targets. After allowing a league-high 30.9 PPG and ranking 30th in total defense, there's nowhere to go but up, right? Schiano is excited about young DLs Gerald McCoy and Adrian Clayborn, and also No. 7 overall pick S Mark Barron, but Tampa's schedule is jam-packed with high-powered offenses. If McCoy can remain healthy'a big 'if' for a guy who has played in only 19 games over two NFL seasons'his presence should help free up Clayborn to rush the quarterback more freely and more often. McCoy is both powerful and shifty with great feet, and Schiano has said he expects the former No. 3 overall pick to dominate opponents in 2012. Barron, meanwhile, is excellent both stopping the run in the box and in pass coverage. |

After a pair of losses, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have slid back to the edge of the playoff race.
The Buccaneers should have a good a chance to improve their position on Sunday when they host the reeling Philadelphia Eagles, who are in the middle of their worst losing streak since 1968.
Despite dropping back-to-back games, Tampa Bay (6-6) is still just a game behind Seattle's for the NFC's final wild-card spot.
"This team is going to fight," coach Greg Schiano said.
The running game has been a big part of the Bucs' success this season, but they only ran for 71 yards in Sunday's 31-23 loss at Denver. Rookie Doug Martin was held to 56 yards on 18 carries after having just 50 on 21 in a 24-23 loss to Atlanta on Nov. 25.
The Bucs are 5-0 when they run for 130 yards or more and 1-6 when they fail to reach that mark.
"That is every offense's dream, to have the best of both worlds," said tight end Dallas Clark, who caught an 11-yard TD pass against the Broncos. "You really put yourself against the wall when you can't get that part of the game going."
Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman also looks to bounce back after throwing an interception that Denver's Von Miller returned for a touchdown to put Tampa Bay in a 28-10 hole in the third quarter.
Freeman completed just 18 of 39 passes for his second-lowest completion percentage (46.2) of the season. Despite the pick in Denver, he ranks sixth in the NFL in touchdown-to-interception ratio (2.88) and hadn't thrown an interception in five of his previous six games.
Freeman has been particularly good in Tampa. He's averaging 9.12 yards per attempt with 10 TDs and two INTs, good for a 105.5 passer rating that's the NFL's third-best at home.
There's an excellent chance Freeman will again play well at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday. The Eagles have allowed opposing quarterbacks to complete 76.3 percent of their passes for nearly 10 yards an attempt in their previous six games, yielding 16 touchdowns without an interception for an astounding 142.4 rating.
Philadelphia (3-9) has given up 30 points or more in five of those contests after losing its eighth straight, 38-33 at Dallas on Sunday night.
With the Eagles also second-to-last in the NFC with 20 sacks, coach Andy Reid decided to make yet another change by firing defensive line coach Jim Washburn and bringing back Tommy Brasher for his third stint with the team.
"He's all about the team," Reid said of Brasher.
The Eagles, however, have at least received a bit of a spark from some of their new faces on offense.
Quarterback Nick Foles completed 22 of 34 passes for 251 yards and a touchdown against the Cowboys, leading Reid to name him the starter even if Michael Vick can return from a concussion that's kept him out the past three games.
Foles has thrown for 793 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions and has a passer rating of 73.3.
"No. 1, I just think he's playing well enough to where I think he can win football games for us," Reid said. "And No. 2, I think where we sit at this position in the season, I think it's the right thing to do."
Fellow rookie Bryce Brown rushed for 169 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries against Dallas while stepping in for starter LeSean McCoy, also out with a concussion. Brown ran for 178 yards and two scores a week earlier against Carolina.
His performance against the Cowboys was somewhat marred by his fumble with less than four minutes left - his third in two weeks - that the Cowboys' Morris Claiborne picked up and returned 50 yards for a touchdown.
Still, the Eagles, who rank second in the league in turnovers (28), took a step in the right direction with only one on Sunday night while also only committing one penalty.
"Their preparation, they're working their tail off to get better," Reid said. "That's an important thing at this point."
Philadelphia and Tampa Bay will meet for the first time since Oct. 11, 2009, a 33-14 Eagles victory as Jeremy Maclin caught six passes for 142 yards and two TDs.
