KEY GAME INFORMATION
NEW ENGLAND: Josh McDaniels returns to the role of offensive coordinator'he called plays for New England in 2007, a record-setting year for Tom Brady and the offense. But while he was gone the Patriots got more comfortable running the ball. Last year they ended up being middle of the pack in terms of run/pass split (41/59 vs. NFL average of 43/57). There will be plenty of work for the backs. The Patriots run a wide range of blocking schemes, but McDaniels strongly prefers a power scheme. Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen are expected to split duties as the primary ball carriers, and Danny Woodhead and Joseph Addai will likely get spot duty on third downs. The Patriots use spread principles. Wes Welker and Aaron Hernandez are utilized frequently out of the slot underneath, while Rob Gronkowski is used as a field stretcher working up the seam. The return of McDaniels and addition of Brandon Lloyd means more deep shots. Lloyd is familiar with the playbook from his days under McDaniels in Denver and was very impressive during off-season workouts. Deion Branch and Jabar Gaffney will primarily stay outside for spacing. The backs have been marginalized in the passing game with the emergence of Hernandez, but Woodhead is typically targeted a couple of times every week. While Gronkowski is frequently Brady's first option from about 10 yards out, they tend to use play-action and utilize Hernandez once they're closer to the goal line. The Patriots allow gobs of yardage, especially through the air, but they will also force a lot of turnovers and don't allow as many points as you'd expect of a defense that surrenders so many yards. DT Vince Wilfork is a monster in the middle, and the team is expected to have a better pass rush in 2012 with the expected contributions from rookies Chandler Jones and Donta' Hightower. Jerod Mayo was limited by a knee injury through most of 2011. As a three-down player who excels at stopping the run, there's no reason he can't top 100 solo tackles, even playing the weak side when New England uses a 4-3 look. Brandon Spikes was also slowed by a knee injury during most of 2011, but bounced back for an impressive 26 total tackles in three post-season games. Patrick Chung was en route to a career year statistically before a foot injury derailed him. He's at his best in the box, but is instinctive enough in pass coverage to make up for some of New England's deficiencies on the corners. If Mayo, Spikes and Chung can all remain healthy in 2012, the Patriots defense has a chance to be vastly improved.
SEATTLE: The Seahawks are well-versed in zone blocking after a year under current offensive line coach Tom Cable, one of the best zone-blocking coaches in the game. They play a lot of two-tight end and three-receiver sets and do a lot of inside zone runs with Marshawn Lynch, who will continue to get a mammoth workload. Change-of-pace back Leon Washington will occasionally spell Lynch on passing downs, taking about a third of the reps, and rookie Robert Turbin is expected to be used on only a handful of snaps as long as Lynch is able to remain healthy. Seattle is run-heavy near the goal line: Lynch will again have a huge role in the red zone, as Seattle was one of four teams to run it more than 60 percent of the time in goal-to-go situations. The Seahawks run a West Coast offense similar to the one QB Matt Flynn played in at Green Bay. Seattle uses a lot of three-WR sets, and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell was able to open things up for slot receiver Doug Baldwin. Split end Sidney Rice is more of a perimeter threat in this offense, and Golden Tate has a chance for an increased number of targets at flanker. Tight end Zach Miller ended up being a bit redundant with Baldwin in the middle of the field, which is why his numbers were down. Miller's contributions are not expected to increase now that he'll be splitting reps with Kellen Winslow. Although their 2011 leading tackler LB David Hawthorne is now in New Orleans, the Seahawks should remain an above-average defense. They finished fourth in the NFL with 22 interceptions (Brandon Browner had six) and made huge improvements in both yards allowed and scoring defense in 2011. One of the reasons was the play of DL Chris Clemons, who after floundering for several different teams has found a home in Seattle with back-to-back 11-sack seasons'there's little reason to believe the explosive DE won't reach double figures again in 2012. Safety Kam Chancellor is an elite in-the-box run-stuffer who even plays some linebacker on passing downs. He's also good enough in coverage that he's not a liability when opponents decide to pass the ball. Chancellor forms one of the NFL's best young safety tandems with Earl Thomas, who draws comparisons to Troy Polamalu due to his athleticism and exceptional instincts.

*Patriots-Seahawks Preview* ===========================

By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer

With Tom Brady under center and a thriving ground game, the New England Patriots' offense is clicking on all cylinders.

In contrast, while the Seattle Seahawks haven't moved the ball with much consistency, their defensive unit ranks as arguably the best in the league.

Something has to give Sunday when the high-scoring Patriots square off against a stingy Seahawks team looking to open 3-0 at home for the second time in three seasons.

Alone atop the AFC East, New England (3-2) is averaging NFL highs of 33.0 points and 439.4 yards. While those numbers aren't much of a surprise with Brady directing the offense, much of the Patriots' success is due to a well-balanced attack.

New England's 165.4 rushing yards per game rank third in the league and their league-best 10 TDs on the ground are two more than Brady's thrown.

"We're getting a lot of nickel defense," Brady said. "When they put little guys out there (in the secondary), we have to take advantage of it. I think we're playing definitely a more physical style and controlling the tempo of the game by running the football. We have to keep doing it. It's only been five games.

"You can't just throw it all day. You can't just run it all day. You have to be able to do both."

After running for 247 yards during a 52-28 win at Buffalo in Week 4, the Patriots gashed Denver for 251 last Sunday in a 31-21 victory - marking their first back-to-back 200-yard efforts since 1978. Running back Stevan Ridley led the way with a career-high 151 yards and a touchdown while Brady threw for a season-low 223 yards with a TD.

"A lot of people key on (Brady) and our running back group has to get some pressure off him so he can be the quarterback he can be," said Ridley, who ranks fifth in the league with 490 rushing yards. "If they're sitting back there staring Brady in the face every play, we can't be a one-dimensional offense."

The surging Patriots, though, could be in for a tough test against Seattle (3-2), which is surrendering a league-low 258.6 yards per game and ranks second in points allowed (14.0).

"I think it will be a great challenge for us this week ... against a defense that's really, really playing well," offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said.

"They're fast. The secondary is big, fast - I would describe them as long. They get their hands on a lot of balls. Even though they're younger, I would say they have a lot of experience playing together. They're all good tacklers."

The Seahawks turned the ball over three times but delivered another superb defensive display last Sunday at Carolina, giving up a season-low 190 yards in a 16-12 win.

"Most teams, after three turnovers, something would go wrong. But our defense held on and fought hard and we stayed true to what we were there to do and finished the game really well," said Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, who spent three seasons at the helm in New England from 1997-99.

"I love seeing that we played so well and so tough on defense."

Seattle has been especially hard on opposing offenses at CenturyLink Field, where it beat Dallas 27-7 on Sept. 16 before handing Green Bay a 14-12 defeat eight days later thanks to some help from a controversial touchdown call by the replacement referees on the last play of the game.

"I think it might be the loudest stadium that we've been in and we're in a lot of loud ones," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. "... It's a huge home field advantage for them."

While their defensive efforts leave little to be desired, the Seahawks - last in the NFL at 163.0 passing yards per game - surely need rookie Russell Wilson to pick up the pace.

Wilson failed to top 160 passing yards in each of his first four games before throwing for 221 with a touchdown and two interceptions last weekend. His mediocre play has led many to question whether backup Matt Flynn might be better suited to lead the offense.

"I use it as fire," Wilson, who's been picked off five times in his last two games, told the team's official website. "I ignore the noise all the time, but at the same time I know that I have to get better."

New England had dropped five straight to Seattle before taking the last two matchups, most recently winning 24-21 on the road Dec. 7, 2008.
