KEY GAME INFORMATION
CINCINNATI: The Bengals returned to a run-first offense in 2011, and that should continue with BenJarvus Green-Ellis stepping in for Cedric Benson. Offensive coordinator Jay Gruden mixed in some more zone blocking principles and stretch plays last year, something that didn't fit with Benson at all. The Bengals have been looking to get Bernard Scott more involved, and this year they should be able to do it. Expect a 60/40 early-down split for Green-Ellis and Scott, with Brian Leonard keeping his third down role because of his ability as a pass protector. Green-Ellis figures to be the focal point of their red zone offense, just like Benson was a year ago. Gruden's offense is West Coast in terminology, but they pressure secondaries deep. A lot of their best plays were jump balls to A.J. Green. Either rookies Mohamed Sanu or Marvin Jones, or Jordan Shipley could slide in opposite Green on the outside, and Gruden will have to tweak the offense since none of them are deep threats. They use a lot of three-WR sets, so there should be ample playing time for two of those secondary targets. TE Jermaine Gresham is the No. 2 target for Dalton, and this offense creates room for him over the middle. The backs are more for pass protection than receiving skills. Gruden gets a little more pass-happy in the red zone, but not absurdly so. When they do throw, Green is overwhelmingly the most popular target. The Bengals defense showed an ability to get to the quarterback in 2011, with 14 players contributing at least one sack to a total that placed fifth in the NFL. Rookie CB Dre' Kirkpatrick will help out the defense with his coverage skills, but this unit doesn't make enough big plays to provide the offense with a lot of short fields. The one guy in the secondary who is capable of making a big play is Reggie Nelson, a rangy centerfielder at free safety with solid ball skills.
PHILADELPHIA: Philly has returned to a relatively balanced offensive attack, finishing middle of the pack in run/pass balance in 2011. The running game really took off after the arrival of offensive line guru Howard Mudd last season, and they're now one of the league's most effective zone-blocking teams. Head coach Andy Reid admitted that LeSean McCoy was overworked last season, so look for him to get closer to about 70 percent of the team's reps rather than the 80-plus percent he got last year. Either Dion Lewis, Bryce Brown or Chris Polk will pick up the rest. All four backs are capable of playing three downs. McCoy will get the vast majority of the team's red zone touches. The Eagles' West Coast is aggressive attacking downfield. Despite last year's issues, DeSean Jackson downfield is still this team's No. 1 option, especially when quarterback Michael Vick is able to buy time with his legs. Tight end Brent Celek emerged as a legitimate No. 2 target underneath, though Jeremy Maclin could have a bigger role now that he's entering training camp 100 percent healthy. Every once in awhile, they'll have a game plan specific to slot receiver Jason Avant, but his role will be limited as long as their top three pass catchers are healthy. They also feature McCoy and the backs heavily in the screen game. When they throw near the goal line, they look to run some sort of play-action or other misdirection and get the ball primarily to Celek. The loss of Asante Samuel hurts the Philadelphia defense, but plenty of talent remains in the secondary, most notably shutdown corners Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. There's also plenty of talent up front with DEs Jason Babin (18 sacks) and Trent Cole (11 sacks). Babin made a great decision following DL coach Jim Washburn back to Philly to play in the 'wide nine' formation, and it resulted in six multi-sack performances in 2011. Philly's blitz-happy scheme keeps defenses from doubling Babin, and the presence of Cole, one of the NFL's most consistent defensive linemen, helps open things up even more. The weakness of this defense in 2011 was the linebacking corps, which is where former Texans LB DeMeco Ryans comes in. His best years in Houston were as a 4-3 middle linebacker before the Texans switched to a 3-4 a year ago. A likely three-down 4-3 MLB in Philly, he's a solid bounce-back candidate and, as long as he can remain healthy, the productive middle man the Eagles have been lacking since Jeremiah Trotter.

*Bengals-Eagles Preview* ========================

By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer

While the Cincinnati Bengals try to move into playoff position, the Philadelphia Eagles will simply be looking to build on their first victory in more than two months.

The Bengals will attempt to bounce back from what they hope does not prove to be a costly defeat when they visit the Eagles on Thursday night.

Cincinnati (7-6) was in line for a fifth straight win before allowing 10 points in the closing minutes of a 20-19 home loss to Dallas on Sunday. Dan Bailey's 40-yard field goal as time expired kept the Bengals from taking over the final AFC wild-card spot after Pittsburgh lost to San Diego.

Luckily for Cincinnati, it can move on very quickly this week.

"I'm not the biggest fan of Thursday games, but I think it does (help)," cornerback Leon Hall said. "You don't have Monday, Tuesday to sit around and think about it, the would-of, could-of, should-of type of things."

The Bengals and Steelers are tied, but Pittsburgh holds the tiebreaker by virtue of its 24-17 win at Cincinnati on Oct. 21. The two teams, who trail AFC North leader Baltimore by two games, meet in Pittsburgh next weekend.

"We have the opportunity to still control our own end, from now until the end," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said. "We still have an opportunity to win the division. We still have an opportunity to qualify for the playoffs in a couple of ways. That's all we can ask for.

"We let a huge opportunity get away. We had a lead, and we didn't protect the lead very well on offense nor defense. That's what's disappointing."

Cincinnati had not allowed more than 13 points in its previous four games and held its fourth straight opponent to fewer than 300 yards, but it could not make stops late. Tony Romo engineered an eight-play drive that concluded with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Dez Bryant with 6:35 left. The Cowboys' winning field goal capped a 13-play, 50-yard drive.

Cincinnati's Andy Dalton threw for 206 yards with a TD and an interception, getting sacked five times. Dalton has been picked off three times in the last two games after not throwing an INT in the previous three.

A.J. Green was held to three receptions for 44 yards and failed to score for a third consecutive game after finding the end zone in nine straight. He had two key drops, one of which could have gone for a touchdown in the third quarter.

"We've got to store this in, let it eat at us and make people pay for it," offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth said.

Doing so might be a little tougher than expected against Philadelphia (4-9), which showed some life in rallying from an 11-point deficit to win 23-21 over Tampa Bay on Sunday. The Eagles snapped an eight-game skid with their first victory since Sept. 30.

Philadelphia has come from behind in all four wins, which have been decided by a combined six points.

"It's a great feeling for the team," quarterback Nick Foles said. "I think the big thing is, it's a great thing for the team sticking together. We can build off of this."

Foles went 32 of 51 for 381 yards to set team single-game rookie passing records for completions and yards. He ran for a TD and his two scoring passes came in the final four minutes.

After converting a fourth-and-5, Foles tossed a 1-yard pass to Jeremy Maclin for the winner as time expired.

Though Michael Vick passed his concussion test, embattled coach Andy Reid said Foles will start the final three games. The third-round pick has completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 1,174 yards, with four TDs and three picks in five games. He has an 80.3 passer rating to Vick's 79.2.

"He has the potential to be a special quarterback in this league," said Maclin, who caught a season-high nine passes for 104 yards. "And he's growing up right in front of our eyes."

Foles won't have veteran tight end Brent Celek to target Thursday due to a concussion, the same reason LeSean McCoy will miss a fourth straight game. The Eagles didn't rule out McCoy or Vick until early Thursday.

Rookie Bryce Brown rushed 43 times for 347 yards and four TDs in the previous two games in place of McCoy, but was held to six yards on 12 carries Sunday.

The Eagles and Bengals tied 13-all at Cincinnati in 2008. The Bengals won 38-10 at Philadelphia in 2005.
