KEY GAME INFORMATION
DETROIT: The Lions couldn't run the ball last year, so they pretty much stopped trying: They were the NFL's most pass-heavy offense, throwing 66.4 percent of the time. When they do run it's often out of a spread passing formation; more than 40 percent of their running plays were out of the shotgun. Jahvid Best will take the majority of the reps as long as he's healthy, with Kevin Smith and Mikel Leshoure rotating in. Leshoure figures to be in line for short-yardage and more traditional running formations, and he could see a handful of short touchdowns as the team's goal line back. This is an aggressive downfield passing game that has Matthew Stafford looking to get the ball to Calvin Johnson on just about every play. They'll start using Titus Young to stretch the middle of the field, and Nate Burleson is often targeted at the line of scrimmage (rookie Ryan Broyles is his heir apparent). Brandon Pettigrew is pretty much a possession wide receiver working the middle of the field, whereas No. 2 TE Tony Scheffler, who only plays about 30 percent of the snaps, stretches the middle of the field. Best and Smith are heavily involved in the screen game. Not surprisingly, the Lions threw a ton in the red zone last year. They scored 37 touchdowns from 19 yards or less last year, and only eight were rushing. When they throw in the red zone, Johnson is targeted most of the time with Pettigrew not far behind. The Lions defense has improved tremendously over the past four years. Detroit still allows too many points and yards against the league's top offenses, but this unit has the ability to punish below-average offenses. Expect breakout years from young star DLs Nick Fairley and Ndamukong Suh, who will enter the season injury-free and out to prove to the world that he can dominate legally, and not just stomp on unprotected offensive linemen. DL Kyle Vanden Bosch started 2012 strong before fizzling in the second half of the season (13 solo tackles, three sacks). He's certainly on the downside of his career. Stephen Tulloch didn't match his gaudy 2010 tackle numbers after coming over from Tennessee to join a unit that has two active outside linebackers in DeAndre Levy and Justin Durant, but he's reliable in the middle, especially against the run.
PHILADELPHIA: Philly has returned to a relatively balanced offensive attack, finishing middle of the pack in run/pass balance in 2011. The running game really took off after the arrival of offensive line guru Howard Mudd last season, and they're now one of the league's most effective zone-blocking teams. Head coach Andy Reid admitted that LeSean McCoy was overworked last season, so look for him to get closer to about 70 percent of the team's reps rather than the 80-plus percent he got last year. Either Dion Lewis, Bryce Brown or Chris Polk will pick up the rest. All four backs are capable of playing three downs. McCoy will get the vast majority of the team's red zone touches. The Eagles' West Coast is aggressive attacking downfield. Despite last year's issues, DeSean Jackson downfield is still this team's No. 1 option, especially when quarterback Michael Vick is able to buy time with his legs. Tight end Brent Celek emerged as a legitimate No. 2 target underneath, though Jeremy Maclin could have a bigger role now that he's entering training camp 100 percent healthy. Every once in awhile, they'll have a game plan specific to slot receiver Jason Avant, but his role will be limited as long as their top three pass catchers are healthy. They also feature McCoy and the backs heavily in the screen game. When they throw near the goal line, they look to run some sort of play-action or other misdirection and get the ball primarily to Celek. The loss of Asante Samuel hurts the Philadelphia defense, but plenty of talent remains in the secondary, most notably shutdown corners Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. There's also plenty of talent up front with DEs Jason Babin (18 sacks) and Trent Cole (11 sacks). Babin made a great decision following DL coach Jim Washburn back to Philly to play in the 'wide nine' formation, and it resulted in six multi-sack performances in 2011. Philly's blitz-happy scheme keeps defenses from doubling Babin, and the presence of Cole, one of the NFL's most consistent defensive linemen, helps open things up even more. The weakness of this defense in 2011 was the linebacking corps, which is where former Texans LB DeMeco Ryans comes in. His best years in Houston were as a 4-3 middle linebacker before the Texans switched to a 3-4 a year ago. A likely three-down 4-3 MLB in Philly, he's a solid bounce-back candidate and, as long as he can remain healthy, the productive middle man the Eagles have been lacking since Jeremiah Trotter.

*Lions-Eagles Preview* ======================

By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer

Sitting at the bottom of the NFC North, the Detroit Lions know they need to come out of their bye week with a much-improved effort going forward.

While the Philadelphia Eagles share the NFC East lead, Michael Vick knows he must get better at holding on to the football.

The visiting Lions try to avoid a fourth consecutive loss Sunday and beat the Eagles for the first time in a quarter-century.

After going 10-6 and snapping an 11-year postseason drought in 2011, Detroit (1-3) was widely expected to take a big step forward this year. That, however, has yet to happen, with the Lions dropping three in a row since a season-opening 27-23 win over St. Louis.

"That's our challenge right now to dig our way out of this," coach Jim Schwartz said. "There have been a lot of things that have happened that are not indicative of where this team will be after 16 games and like I said, we need to get those corrected."

The Lions saw their woes continue in a 20-13 home loss to Minnesota on Sept. 30, allowing touchdowns on kickoff and punt returns for the second consecutive game. Matthew Stafford, though, is hoping a week off makes all the difference.

"Obviously, you want to head into a bye week with a win," he told the team's official website, "but it's a good time for us to kind of get away from it a little bit, refocus and get ready for a 12-game stretch."

Stafford has been limited to three touchdown passes - he had 41 last season - and his four interceptions equal his total through eight games in 2011. He has yet to find Calvin Johnson in the end zone, though the star wideout ranks second in the league with 105.8 receiving yards per game.

"I'm not real surprised," said Johnson, who had 16 TD catches last year but whose only one this season came from backup Shaun Hill.

"We know teams aren't going to let you do what you did last year. We have to find a different way."

The Eagles (3-2) also are in search of better play from their quarterback. Vick's eight fumbles are three more than any other player and his five lost fumbles also lead the league. He put the ball on the ground three times last Sunday in a last-second 16-14 defeat at Pittsburgh, and lost one fumble at the Steelers' 1.

"I wish I could take back the fumble on the goal line, but I can't," he said. "Ultimately, we put ourselves in a position to win this game, but we didn't win. That's how it goes in the NFL. You wish you could have some things back, and there are plenty of things I wish I could have back through the course of this season, but you can't get them. I will do a better job of protecting the football."

While Vick threw six interceptions in his first two games, he hasn't been picked off in his last three - a trend coach Andy Reid hopes to see with his fumbles.

"We've got to go back and work on ball security and he knows that and he's gonna get it right just like he did with the interceptions," Reid said. "We're gonna get it fixed. It won't be the last time he carries the football. He just has to secure it away, keep it high and tight. When he's in traffic, get that thing covered up with the off hand."

Vick could be in for another long day against a Detroit defense that has nine sacks and has allowed five passing TDs. The Lions are surrendering an average of 213.0 yards through the air to rank 10th in the league.

Besides defensive end Cliff Avril (back) possibly returning, Detroit could receive a boost from safety Louis Delmas, who has a chance to make his season debut Sunday following left knee surgery.

"He's a big-time playmaker," defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch said of Delmas. "And, he brings an attitude and energy to our team that really picks everyone up."

The Lions could surely use Delmas as they try to snap a six-game losing streak to the Eagles, including playoffs, dating to a win in Philadelphia on Nov. 16, 1986.

Philadelphia took the most recent matchup 35-32 at Detroit on Sept. 19, 2010, behind 120 rushing yards and a career best-tying three touchdowns from LeSean McCoy. Vick threw for 284 yards and two TDs but fumbled twice.

The Eagles, 3-0 when McCoy rushes for at least 80 yards, are looking to open 3-0 at home for the first time since 2005.

Detroit has lost six of seven on the road, including a playoff loss, while allowing averages of 36.6 points and 441.9 yards.
