KEY GAME INFORMATION
CLEVELAND: In a perfect world, head coach Pat Shurmur would make this offense much more pass-heavy, but rookie Trent Richardson is his best offensive player by a wide margin. They'll continue to pound the ball between the tackles on early downs, and Richardson can stay on the field for three downs. There's not a lot of creativity with this running scheme, some man blocking and inside zone runs. If Montario Hardesty is able to keep his roster spot this season, he will likely spell Richardson on early downs when necessary. Veteran Brandon Jackson will probably split third down reps with Richardson. The red zone reps will be Richardson's, as everything Cleveland does in the red zone is based on the run. Like Shurmur, new offensive coordinator Brad Childress comes from the Andy Reid coaching tree, so there will be no big changes. With Brandon Weeden starting, this will continue to be a classic West Coast attack, so Greg Little will continue to see the majority of passes. TE Benjamin Watson is the default No. 2 over the middle of the field, while Mohamed Massaquoi's lack of separation skills relegate him to being an infrequent target. They also find uses for No. 2 TE Evan Moore, who can stretch the middle of the field. They'll run some screens for Richardson. In the red zone, they rarely look outside the hash marks when they throw, instead trying to isolate Moore one-on-one or looking for Josh Cribbs to win a battle over the middle. Cleveland actually allowed the fifth-fewest points in the league and finished 10th in total defense last year, but the Browns don't make enough big plays necessary to compensate for what's been a weak offense. Manning the middle after Cleveland's switch to a 4-3 defense was D'Qwell Jackson, whose 116 solo tackles were the most anyone in the NFL has had since 2007. The best player on this unit is DE Jabaal Sheard, who dominated as a rookie, playing every down and piling up six sacks in his final seven games. He may see more double teams now, but he'll continue to be a force who's always on the field. Many figured Ahtyba Rubin's gaudy tackle totals would drop last year when Cleveland switched to a 3-4 defense, but he remained a run-stuffing monster and also started flashing some pass-rushing ability in 2011. Free-agent signee Frostee Rucker is not a great pass rusher, but when he gets his hands on a ball carrier, he tends to finish the job. T.J. Ward's disappointing 2011 was cut short by a serious foot sprain, but he's still one of the more promising young downhill safeties in the NFL. Shutdown cornerback Joe Haden battled a knee injury for parts of last season and should also be better in 2012.
OAKLAND: After switching back to a power-blocking scheme last year, the Raiders are going back to the zone-blocking scheme they used with success in the Tom Cable years'they still have the line to do it. Darren McFadden was better in last year's power-blocking scheme, but he's had success in the one-cut system. Considering his injury history they weren't about to build around him though. His back-ups, Mike Goodson and Taiwan Jones, are both one-cut runners. They'll likely ride McFadden as a three-down back until he gets hurt again. The Raiders were the NFL's most run-heavy red zone offense a year ago, and it figures to stay that way. Offensive coordinator Greg Knapp prefers a catch-and-run West Coast passing game to the vertical attack the Raiders ran during the Al Davis years. Considering his fading arm strength, quarterback Carson Palmer should benefit. Palmer will be asked to do a little more in terms of throwing on the move and ball-handling on play-action. His receivers, however, don't really fit the West Coast mold'Darrius Heyward-Bey, Denarius Moore and Jacoby Ford are all primarily deep threats. It could open up opportunities for the tight ends, though Brandon Myers isn't much of an option. In the end, there could be a ton of passes going to McFadden. When the Raiders throw off play-action near the goal line, Heyward-Bey and Moore figure to be the most common targets. The Raiders were woeful on defense in 2011, ranking 27th in the NFL in both passing defense and rushing defense, and allowing the fourth-most points in the league. They should benefit from the return of DE Matt Shaughnessy, whose 2011 season was cut very short by a shoulder injury. With a quick first step and long arms that allow him to fight off blocks, he'll not only produce from the starting RDE spot in 2012, but he'll draw attention away from Richard Seymour'the veteran lineman totaled just one sack over his final 11 games of 2011 without Shaughnessy on the field. Former No. 8 overall pick Rolando McClain will be Oakland's starting middle linebacker in new head coach Dennis Allen's defense, but that's only if he avoids suspension and jail time'McClain is appealing a 180-day jail sentence he received in May after being found guilty on assault charges. About the only good thing that can be said about that secondary is that safety Tyvon Branch is a solid run-stopper'the Raiders are severely lacking in talent when it comes to pass coverage.

*Browns-Raiders Preview* ========================

By MATT BEARDMORE STATS Writer

No matter what happens the rest of the way, the Oakland Raiders will finish without a winning record for a 10th consecutive season.

The way the Cleveland Browns have struggled on the road, it appears they're headed toward a fifth straight losing season.

Oakland will try to avoid its first five-game losing streak in five seasons - and extend the Browns' franchise-record 12-game road skid - on Sunday when Cleveland rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden could return from a concussion.

Expectations were high heading after the Raiders (3-8) finished one game shy of the playoffs in 2011, but those good feelings are gone as the team is riding its first four-game skid since 2008.

Oakland's defense has been atrocious during this stretch, allowing 169 points - the second-most during a four-game span since the merger in 1970.

The Carson Palmer-led offense generated a season-low 218 yards in last Sunday's 34-10 loss at Cincinnati, and the team has now lost three straight by 21 or more for the first time in franchise history.

"It's been mind-blowing," defensive tackle Tommy Kelly said. "I would have never, in my wildest dreams, thought we would be 3-8 right now."

Another loss would send the Raiders to their first six-game skid since Oct. 14-Nov. 18, 2007.

Oakland, though, could get a boost in the backfield with running backs Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson practicing after each missed the last three games with ankle sprains.

"It feels like it's been a lot longer than it actually has," Palmer said. "But just good to see them in the huddle and see them get reps and see Darren smiling and hitting the hole hard, and same thing with Goody. Good for the team but also good for the offense to have those guys back."

Rookie coach Dennis Allen said converted fullback Marcel Reece has "earned the right to carry the ball some" after rushing for 225 yards over the last three contests, but McFadden and Goodson would likely get the bulk of the carries if healthy.

"(McFadden is) explosive," said Browns coach Pat Shurmur, whose team has allowed just 112 rushing yards over the last two games. "He's one of those guys that can score when he has the ball in his hands. ... When you have players on the field that can score touchdowns, that's what you want. With him not being in there, of course that's hurt them. With him being in there, it's obviously going to help them."

The Browns (3-8) would likely be in a better position to win back-to-back games for the first time since Sept. 18-25, 2011, if Weeden can go. The 29-year-old rookie suffered a concussion late in last Sunday's 20-14 win over Pittsburgh, but he was cleared to practice on Wednesday.

"At this point, this early in the week he's healthy, so he goes," Shurmur said.

If that changes, former starter Colt McCoy, who threw for 215 yards and two scores in a 24-17 loss at Oakland on Oct. 16, 2011, will try to guide the Browns to their first road win since beating Indianapolis on Sept. 18, 2011.

"We've got Colt and Colt is going to do whatever he does," running back Trent Richardson said. "We're going to make sure Colt knows we believe in him. But I'm pretty sure Weeden's going to be back."

The Raiders' defense can't be looking forward to seeing Richardson in the backfield after surrendering 728 rushing yards and nine scores since the team's last victory.

Richardson has 407 rushing yards and two TDs over his last four games after finishing with 85 yards, including a go-ahead 15-yard score in the third quarter, last Sunday.

That run helped Cleveland improve to 2-5 in games decided by seven or fewer points.

"To finish a close game like that is big for us," Richardson said.

It's uncertain if there will be an Alabama reunion between Richardson and Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain after Allen held him out of practice Wednesday for a "team-related" issue.

Oakland could also be without defensive tackle Richard Seymour (knee, hamstring) for a fourth consecutive game.

The Raiders have won two straight at home over Cleveland by a total of nine points.
