KEY GAME INFORMATION
NEW ENGLAND: Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has always had a strong preference for the power running game, using a lot of classic looks with pulling guards opening up room on between-the-tackles runs. Stevan Ridley had every chance to become a full-fledged feature back the past two seasons, but his tendency to put the ball on the ground will likely lead to a committee approach again, with Ridley splitting time with Brandon Bolden. Shane Vereen is more of an out- side-the-tackles, change-of-pace back.
This is a pick-your-poison passing game. The fact that New England played all of 2013 without Aaron Hernandez and most of it without Rob Gronkowski and Danny Amendola makes it difficult to pinpoint what they'd like to do, but Julian Edelman and Amendola working underneath will be a primary focus. Gronkowski, who often stays in to pass protect, stretches the middle of the field, with either Aaron Dobson or Brandon LaFell working on the boundary. Vereen runs a lot of wheel routes, and he and Edelman are used frequently in the screen game. When the Pats throw in the red zone, Gronkowski is often the primary target, but Edelman will continue to benefit from the attention Gronk draws in the end zone. Vereen had three receiving TDs on four targets inside the 10 last season.
The Patriots give up gobs of yards, but still placed among the top-10 NFL defenses in points allowed, turnovers and sacks. They finally bolstered their lackluster secondary by inking star cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner, and will also get unit leaders DT Vince Wilfork and MLB Jerod Mayo back from injury to man the middle.
NY JETS: Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg turned to a much more run-heavy approach than he traditionally had, and that was because of the fact that he had an erratic rookie under center last season in Geno Smith. This scheme skews toward zone blocking, but they still do a fair amount of gap blocking as well. Chris Johnson figures to lead the committee in touches, especially between the 20s. Chris Ivory provides a power complement and could also be their closer. The Jets were run-heavy in the red zone last season, and Ivory figures to be the goal line back this year.
Mornhinweg is a West Coast guy, but he went vertical off play-action often last season, and figures to do so again regardless of whether it's Michael Vick or Smith under center. Eric Decker gives them more of a traditional, big-framed target to lean on as a possession receiver and in the red zone. They use three-wide often, and slot man Jeremy Kerley figures to serve as their No. 2 target again. TE Jace Amaro will work the middle of the field in a secondary possession role, and he can exploit the deep seam against linebackers. Johnson will be used frequently in the screen game. Mornhinweg has a history of getting cute with the passing game inside the 20, and Vick's arrival could allow him to do so again. When the pair was in Philly, Vick was often put on the move around the goal line.
The Jets led the league by allowing only 3.4 yards per carry last year and were fourth in red-zone defense, but this unit needs to do a better job forcing turnovers. They had the second-fewest takeaways in the NFL (15) and downgraded their secondary with cornerback Dimitri Patterson trying to replace top CB Antonio Cromartie.

*Patriots-Jets Preview* =======================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

The New England Patriots have wrapped up the AFC East for a sixth straight season, and ensuring home-field advantage could require them to win two more games against the divisional foes they've so often dominated.

The first might not come as easily as expected with the Patriots visiting the New York Jets on Sunday in a series that's produced plenty of close contests in the last three seasons.

A win coupled with a Denver loss would clinch the top seed for the Patriots (11-3) before their Week 17 home game against Buffalo.

The Jets (3-11) actually came closer than anyone to beating the Patriots in New England, falling 27-25 on Oct. 16 to give Bill Belichick's team a seventh win in the last eight meetings. Four of the last five have been decided by three points or fewer, and the Jets won last season's meeting in New York 30-27 in overtime.

"I know the records are what they are, but we don't look at it like that," Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said. "We lost going into the Meadowlands last year."

That loss featured 295 yards of total offense from the Patriots with Brady completing 22 of 46 for 228 yards and an interception. It is the only regular-season game in Brady's last 25 that he's been held without a touchdown pass.

In the last three meetings, the Jets have held the Patriots to 283.3 yards and 22.3 points per game.

"They've got a real good defense," Brady said. "We're anticipating their best game."

Another strong defense did little to slow Brady and the rest of the offense in last Sunday's 41-13 home win over Miami. The Jets have the sixth-ranked defense (329.8 yards per game) while Miami ranks seventh (331.6). The Jets have been especially strong against the run, limiting opponents to 87.5 yards for the fourth-lowest average in football.

The win over the Dolphins, however, was an extension of the Patriots' offensive surge since the tight contest with the Jets. They're 6-1 since with a league-best 36.4 points and 419.9 yards per game, which ranks third behind Pittsburgh and Green Bay.

Top receiver Julian Edelman caught seven passes for 88 yards and a TD, but he's been limited in practice after suffering a concussion.

While the idea of New England breaking from the series trend and putting up crooked numbers seems entirely plausible, the Jets doing so is likely out of the question.

New York ranks 30th in points per game (16.4), which is a big reason why Rex Ryan could be coaching his last game in the Patriots-Jets series. Still, he remains focused on the Patriots and a Week 17 trip to Miami.

"It's not hard for me to do," Ryan said. "I'm a confident person, and I think I'm a decent football coach and I think people who know the game realize that. So, I don't worry about it."

Through it all, the New York rushing attack has remained impressive. Dating to a 218-yard performance against New England, the Jets have gained 166.6 yards per game on the ground, which trails only Seattle. Their 4.74 yards per carry mark trails the Seahawks and the Packers.

The passing attack remains underwhelming after last Sunday's 16-11 win at Tennessee. Geno Smith has started the last three games with two TDs and two INTs and a 78.2 rating, but it hasn't been enough to step from the bottom of the league, where the Jets sit with 168.9 passing yards per game.

Complicating the passing game is Percy Harvin's status. Harvin has missed practice while resting his severely sprained left ankle, which he played through Sunday at Tennessee.

Ryan said Wednesday that Harvin suffered a third-degree sprain two weeks ago at Minnesota. Harvin's availability against New England is uncertain, but he says the ankle feels "a lot better" than it did a week ago.

Darrelle Revis used to make things difficult for New England receivers but will now return to New York for the first time with the Patriots and the second time overall.

"I'll probably just approach it like I did when I played with Tampa last year, just treat it like another game," said Revis, who could make things difficult on Harvin and Eric Decker.

It's a matchup the New England defense as a whole can approach with plenty of confidence, and it seems the unit has done that just about every week since a 41-14 loss at Kansas City on Sept. 29.

In 10 games since, the Patriots have held opponents to 19.0 points per game, which ranks sixth despite that span including trips to Indianapolis and Green Bay and a home game with Denver - three of the five highest-scoring teams in the league.

Expressing such confidence, though, isn't something Belichick's players often do.

"We have to play our best football to win," New England defensive end Chandler Jones said, "and I truly believe that."
