KEY GAME INFORMATION
CLEVELAND: In a perfect world, head coach Pat Shurmur would make this offense much more pass-heavy, but rookie Trent Richardson is his best offensive player by a wide margin. They'll continue to pound the ball between the tackles on early downs, and Richardson can stay on the field for three downs. There's not a lot of creativity with this running scheme, some man blocking and inside zone runs. If Montario Hardesty is able to keep his roster spot this season, he will likely spell Richardson on early downs when necessary. Veteran Brandon Jackson will probably split third down reps with Richardson. The red zone reps will be Richardson's, as everything Cleveland does in the red zone is based on the run. Like Shurmur, new offensive coordinator Brad Childress comes from the Andy Reid coaching tree, so there will be no big changes. With Brandon Weeden starting, this will continue to be a classic West Coast attack, so Greg Little will continue to see the majority of passes. TE Benjamin Watson is the default No. 2 over the middle of the field, while Mohamed Massaquoi's lack of separation skills relegate him to being an infrequent target. They also find uses for No. 2 TE Evan Moore, who can stretch the middle of the field. They'll run some screens for Richardson. In the red zone, they rarely look outside the hash marks when they throw, instead trying to isolate Moore one-on-one or looking for Josh Cribbs to win a battle over the middle. Cleveland actually allowed the fifth-fewest points in the league and finished 10th in total defense last year, but the Browns don't make enough big plays necessary to compensate for what's been a weak offense. Manning the middle after Cleveland's switch to a 4-3 defense was D'Qwell Jackson, whose 116 solo tackles were the most anyone in the NFL has had since 2007. The best player on this unit is DE Jabaal Sheard, who dominated as a rookie, playing every down and piling up six sacks in his final seven games. He may see more double teams now, but he'll continue to be a force who's always on the field. Many figured Ahtyba Rubin's gaudy tackle totals would drop last year when Cleveland switched to a 3-4 defense, but he remained a run-stuffing monster and also started flashing some pass-rushing ability in 2011. Free-agent signee Frostee Rucker is not a great pass rusher, but when he gets his hands on a ball carrier, he tends to finish the job. T.J. Ward's disappointing 2011 was cut short by a serious foot sprain, but he's still one of the more promising young downhill safeties in the NFL. Shutdown cornerback Joe Haden battled a knee injury for parts of last season and should also be better in 2012.
NY GIANTS: The Giants' run game is built primarily around man-on-man power blocking. The backfield has been shuffled a bit with the plodding Brandon Jacobs out and explosive rookie David Wilson in. But despite the fact that they burned a first-rounder on Wilson, Ahmad Bradshaw is still expected to handle the majority of the snaps. Bradshaw has become decent as a blocker and receiver, while Wilson has a long way to go in blitz pick-up. When they run near the goal line, Bradshaw will be the primary back, a role he spilt with Jacobs last season. D.J. Ware will pick up some passing down scraps, but will spend most of the game on the sidelines unless Bradshaw or Wilson gets hurt. The key players in offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride's complex passing game have meshed nicely. They might run a little less of their three-wide base this year with Mario Manningham out and rookie Rueben Randle in. Victor Cruz, who is effective inside and out, will slide to the slot when Randle is on the field, and Cruz will be Eli Manning's top target; Manning has always relied heavily on his slot guys. Hakeem Nicks is strictly on the perimeter as a big-play threat and will also be targeted frequently. Manning uses his tight ends as safety blankets, though new TE Martellus Bennett is more of an up-the-field threat with inconsistent hands. They'll run a handful of screens to all three backs, but Bradshaw is relied on for blitz pickup. Nicks was Manning's favorite red zone target a year ago, and he should be again in 2012. The Giants have nearly 100 sacks over the past two seasons, with stars Jason Pierre-Paul and Justin Tuck (when healthy) anchoring what's arguably the NFL's best defensive line. Pierre-Paul is the most athletic lineman in the league, able to rush the quarterback, tackle, bat down passes and force fumbles. Tuck, meanwhile, has vowed to be in the best shape of his life to start 2012, in an effort to prevent a second straight injury-marred campaign in which he saw limited snaps. Then there's Osi Umenyiora, who is usually good for about 10 sacks despite the fact that he's on the sidelines for many running downs. The secondary will get a boost from the return of cornerback Terrell Thomas, whose 21 passes defensed in 2010 ranked third in the NFL. Antrel Rolle played safety and some slot corner last year, but the return of Thomas, who tore his ACL last August, should allow Rolle to play more exclusively at his natural safety position in 2012.

*Browns-Giants Preview* =======================

By TOM CASTRO STATS Senior Editor

Although the New York Giants' next game comes at home against a Cleveland Browns team that has lost 10 in a row, the contest appears to be a critical one for the defending Super Bowl champions.

That's because the Giants are facing one of the few supposed soft spots in their brutal schedule, which they'll try to take advantage of Sunday in what will be a rare day game for them in the early going.

The Giants (2-2) should hit the field eager to bounce back from a heartbreaking loss last week, as they fell 19-17 at Philadelphia to drop to 0-2 in the NFC East for the first time since 1996. New York appeared on its way to another fourth-quarter comeback victory in the closing minutes, driving to the Eagles' 27.

However, a pass interference penalty pushed the Giants back to the 36, and Lawrence Tynes eventually came up just short on a 54-yard field-goal attempt with 15 seconds remaining.

"We've still got four more divisional games," quarterback Eli Manning said. "It's a lot of football left and we've got to worry about Cleveland and get back to winning and there's no point in getting down now."

Apparently still suffering from the identity crisis that plagued the team throughout last season, New York went back to looking like the club that opened 7-7 before winning its last six games to capture the championship.

The Giants had won two in a row after falling to Dallas and appeared on the verge of giving themselves a chance to have a four-game winning streak after this week.

Instead, New York finds itself in a familiar position of having to overcome adversity.

"We have a great team and we believe in each other," running back Ahmad Bradshaw said. "We've been down this road before. There's nothing we can't handle. There's nothing we're not preparing for. Like I said, we played a great game. It's just how it ended, we didn't finish."

Bradshaw and his teammates had better finish Sunday - only their second afternoon game so far in 2012 - or they might be facing an even bigger uphill battle than they encountered last year. With games against San Francisco, Green Bay, Atlanta, Baltimore and Pittsburgh remaining in addition to their divisional games, the Giants may not be able to afford to lose to the Browns if they want to make the playoffs.

While Cleveland (0-4) is one of two winless teams, the Browns haven't lost by more than 10 points and played Baltimore tough on the road last Thursday, falling 23-16. Cleveland drove from its own 10 to the Ravens' 33 in the final minute, but a pair of desperation passes into the end zone from Brandon Weeden fell incomplete.

Plus, New York has been increasingly banged up on both sides of the ball. Receivers Hakeem Nicks and Ramses Barden, along with safety Kenny Phillips and defensive tackle Rocky Bernard, won't play due to injuries. Other key players such as offensive linemen David Diehl and Chris Snee, safety Antrelle Rolle and cornerback Corey Webster, are questionable due to health issues.

The Browns will try to take advantage, though they could also be missing some key players. Receiver Josh Cribbs, however, practiced Wednesday for the first time since sustaining a concussion against Baltimore.

"We'll put the guys on the field that can play, make the roster as good as we can make it," said coach Pat Shurmur, whose team hasn't won since Nov. 20. "If we have to use three tight ends, all right."

Containing Manning, who threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns with one interception last week, could prove to be a major challenge. Cleveland is allowing 286.0 yards per game through the air - 28th in the league - and 403.3 overall.

After giving up 191 yards rushing to the Eagles, the Giants will be facing a Browns team that's totaled 76 in the last two games and is averaging 76.3. New York, though, still may see a steady diet of bruising rookie running back Trent Richardson, who's rushed for 222 yards and three touchdowns.

"We've got to find a way to get the ball to No. 33 somehow," Weeden said of the No. 3 overall pick, who caught four passes for 57 yards against the Ravens.

The Giants had a four-game winning streak in the series snapped in the last meeting, a 35-14 loss at Cleveland on Oct. 13, 2008. Manning threw three interceptions.
