| |  | WASHINGTON: The Redskins had to go away from the running game because they fell behind early and often last year, but their preference is to rely on their vaunted zone-blocking scheme. They generally settle on one feature back at the beginning of each game, but there's no guarantee who it will be week-to-week. Roy Helu enters the year as the heavy favorite for carries, followed by Tim Hightower and Evan Royster. All three are capable of playing three downs. Royster might be an option in the red zone later in the year, but at this point Helu and Hightower are the backs who have goal line experience. Robert Griffin III is an excellent fit in the passing game of head coach Mike and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. They want their quarterbacks to move around and throw on the run, and Griffin can do exactly that. Washington has shuffled its receiving corps. Santana Moss has a chance to be the No. 1 receiver by design, and he will move to the slot when they go three-wide. Pierre Garcon will stretch the field (Griffin threw a lot of deep balls at Baylor) with Leonard Hankerson a deep threat on the opposite side. Josh Morgan is likely the odd man out, especially since the Redskins will play a lot of two-TE sets. Because TE Fred Davis runs more WR routes, Helu could end up being Griffin's safety valve. The Shanahans love to put their quarterback on the move near the goal line too, and Griffin will have the option of a short pass or trying to punch it in himself. This will be a new-look defense with safeties LaRon Landry and O.J. Atogwe replaced by free agents Madieu Williams and Tanard Jackson. Cedric Griffin also improves the DB unit. Ryan Kerrigan and Brian Orakpo are skilled pass rushers, but the Redskins face a tough schedule this season. Meanwhile, any thoughts last year that London Fletcher may be slowing down were erased by a big finish, in which he racked up 86 total tackles over the last seven games. Fletcher's heir apparent, perhaps as early as 2013, appears to be Perry Riley, who was great last season after earning a starting spot (63 total tackles over eight starts). One of two significant returnees to the secondary is DeJon Gomes, who proved to be a capable tackler with 28 total tackles in his five starts. He has the ability to play strong safety as well as nickel corner. Cornerback DeAngelo Hall, meanwhile, is so overaggressive that opposing quarterbacks can't resist throwing at him. | | CLEVELAND: In a perfect world, head coach Pat Shurmur would make this offense much more pass-heavy, but rookie Trent Richardson is his best offensive player by a wide margin. They'll continue to pound the ball between the tackles on early downs, and Richardson can stay on the field for three downs. There's not a lot of creativity with this running scheme, some man blocking and inside zone runs. If Montario Hardesty is able to keep his roster spot this season, he will likely spell Richardson on early downs when necessary. Veteran Brandon Jackson will probably split third down reps with Richardson. The red zone reps will be Richardson's, as everything Cleveland does in the red zone is based on the run. Like Shurmur, new offensive coordinator Brad Childress comes from the Andy Reid coaching tree, so there will be no big changes. With Brandon Weeden starting, this will continue to be a classic West Coast attack, so Greg Little will continue to see the majority of passes. TE Benjamin Watson is the default No. 2 over the middle of the field, while Mohamed Massaquoi's lack of separation skills relegate him to being an infrequent target. They also find uses for No. 2 TE Evan Moore, who can stretch the middle of the field. They'll run some screens for Richardson. In the red zone, they rarely look outside the hash marks when they throw, instead trying to isolate Moore one-on-one or looking for Josh Cribbs to win a battle over the middle. Cleveland actually allowed the fifth-fewest points in the league and finished 10th in total defense last year, but the Browns don't make enough big plays necessary to compensate for what's been a weak offense. Manning the middle after Cleveland's switch to a 4-3 defense was D'Qwell Jackson, whose 116 solo tackles were the most anyone in the NFL has had since 2007. The best player on this unit is DE Jabaal Sheard, who dominated as a rookie, playing every down and piling up six sacks in his final seven games. He may see more double teams now, but he'll continue to be a force who's always on the field. Many figured Ahtyba Rubin's gaudy tackle totals would drop last year when Cleveland switched to a 3-4 defense, but he remained a run-stuffing monster and also started flashing some pass-rushing ability in 2011. Free-agent signee Frostee Rucker is not a great pass rusher, but when he gets his hands on a ball carrier, he tends to finish the job. T.J. Ward's disappointing 2011 was cut short by a serious foot sprain, but he's still one of the more promising young downhill safeties in the NFL. Shutdown cornerback Joe Haden battled a knee injury for parts of last season and should also be better in 2012. |

The playoff-hopeful Washington Redskins are trying to win five straight for the first time in seven seasons.
They'll have to do it without emerging star quarterback Robert Griffin III.
Backup and fellow rookie Kirk Cousins will start for the Redskins on Sunday when they visit the suddenly red-hot Cleveland Browns.
Griffin exited last Sunday's 31-28 overtime win over Baltimore late in regulation following an awkward hit to this leg. He was eventually diagnosed with a sprained right knee and was limited in practice all week.
The decision to start Cousins apparently came after Griffin was re-examined by doctors on Saturday. Coach Mike Shanahan had said the doctor's evaluation would play a factor in who starts.
Griffin tweeted: "The decision was not my own... But I will be there for my team!!! In every way I possibly can".
The Redskins did not say whether Griffin will be active for the game, or whether veteran Rex Grossman, who has been an inactive third-string quarterback for every game this season, will serve as the primary backup to Cousins.
Griffin, tied with Tom Brady with an NFL-best 104.2 passer rating, has led the Redskins (7-6) to within one game of NFC East-leading New York. Though Washington's postseason chances may take a hit without him, Cousins looked very capable late in Sunday's victory.
After Griffin went down against the Ravens, the former Michigan State standout stepped in to complete both his passes for 26 yards, including an 11-yard scoring strike to Pierre Garcon with 29 seconds left in regulation. Cousins then converted the two-point conversion on a quarterback draw to tie the game.
"He's ice. Like they used to say about Larry Bird, he got ice water in his veins," receiver Joshua Morgan said. "That's the best thing you can say about Kirk."
Cousins also earned high praise from Shanahan and seems more than capable of carrying the load if need be.
"You're running the scout team the majority of the time, and you're expected to go in there and perform," Shanahan said. "So there's a lot of pressure on people. Some people can handle it; other people can't. But when you prepare yourself like he has, it didn't surprise me that he was flawless in what he did."
While Washington is seeking its first five-game winning streak since 2005, Cleveland (5-8) has put together three straight victories for the first time since a four-game run to close the 2009 season.
After beating Pittsburgh 20-14 and Oakland 20-17, the Browns posted their most lopsided victory since 2003 last Sunday, 30-7 over Kansas City.
"It's all kind of coming together," said 14-year veteran Phil Dawson, who made three field goals. "We're just doing all the little things right now. Guys are hungry to come back to work every day. There's some energy around here that I haven't felt. This is all good."
Trent Richardson was limited to 42 yards on 18 carries against the Chiefs but scored his eighth and ninth rushing touchdowns to tie Hall of Famer Jim Brown's franchise rookie record. The bruising back is tied for third in the league with 10 TDs from scrimmage.
"I don't want to override my boundaries with, 'We're the best team,' or say stuff like that, but we're putting something together here and it's going to be beautiful," said Richardson, who was taken No. 3 overall in this year's draft - one spot after Griffin. "We haven't arrived yet, but we're just trying to win to get to the next level and be an elite team."
While the Browns likely prepared for both quarterbacks, they could also have their hands full with Alfred Morris. The rookie back is coming off his third consecutive 100-yard effort, rushing for 126 yards and a touchdown against the Ravens. His 1,228 yards on the ground rank fourth in the league.
Slowing down Garcon could also prove crucial. The Redskins are 6-1 when he's active and 4-0 when he has at least four catches. Garcon has hauled in 17 receptions for 275 yards over his last three games, scoring in each.
