KEY GAME INFORMATION
TAMPA BAY: The Bucs seem to be gearing up to do a lot of running this season. New head coach Greg Schiano oversaw a run-heavy team at Rutgers, and offensive line coach Bob Bostad oversaw Wisconsin's run-heavy power game among his previous jobs. They also added an elite left guard in Carl Nicks, a first-round back in Doug Martin and a great blocking wide receiver in Vincent Jackson. The Bucs will use primarily a zone-blocking scheme with a lot of inside runs. LeGarrette Blount and Martin will probably be close to a 50/50 share on early downs, with Martin taking all third down reps. While Blount will have his role greatly reduced between the 20's, he'll have a chance to keep goal line carries. New offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan's offense will be far more aggressive getting the ball downfield, which should be a nice match for Josh Freeman's arm strength and Jackson's downfield ball skills. The reads generally go deep-to-short and rarely side-to-side. So after Jackson, Freeman will more likely come down to Preston Parker than go across to Mike Williams. The Bucs also plan on using their backs in the passing game much more often, which is why they traded up into the first round to grab Martin. When Tampa throws in the red zone and down near the goal line, Jackson and Williams are the team's most capable targets. After allowing a league-high 30.9 PPG and ranking 30th in total defense, there's nowhere to go but up, right? Schiano is excited about young DLs Gerald McCoy and Adrian Clayborn, and also No. 7 overall pick S Mark Barron, but Tampa's schedule is jam-packed with high-powered offenses. If McCoy can remain healthy'a big 'if' for a guy who has played in only 19 games over two NFL seasons'his presence should help free up Clayborn to rush the quarterback more freely and more often. McCoy is both powerful and shifty with great feet, and Schiano has said he expects the former No. 3 overall pick to dominate opponents in 2012. Barron, meanwhile, is excellent both stopping the run in the box and in pass coverage.
CAROLINA: While the Panthers are extremely run-heavy, that shouldn't be confused with being conservative. Offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski implemented a unique running game that is traditional about two-thirds of the time, with the rest of the playbook being option plays for Cam Newton. Their running back rotation is tough to figure out, as last year DeAngelo Williams started, Jonathan Stewart played more reps, but Williams had more carries. The Panthers insist that Mike Tolbert will primarily be a fullback, though he'll surely play in some single-back sets. The Panthers are content to let Newton create in the red zone, as he was by far their most often-used weapon deep in opponent territory (10 more red-zone carries than Carolina's running backs combined). Chudzinski's offense is rooted in the big play, which is why it suits Newton so well. Besides giving him some space to improvise, Newton's first read is almost always Steve Smith downfield, and he'll force throws to him. While Brandon LaFell became more involved in the offense, especially after overtaking Legedu Naanee late in the year, Newton rarely got past his second read, which was to come down to Greg Olsen in the middle of the field or whichever back is in the game. Expect LaFell to be more involved as Newton grows more comfortable running the offense in his second NFL season. Carolina ranked 27th in scoring defense and 28th in total defense in 2011, and still needs a ton of work. But selecting LB tackling machine Luke Kuechly ninth overall was a nice upgrade'with Kuechly and Jon Beason at linebacker, Charles Johnson will be freed up to do what he does best, which is rush the quarterback. Expect at least a dozen sacks and an uptick in tackles this coming season. Also expect more from Greg Hardy, who saw a rise in his tackle numbers from 2010 to '11, and his sack total should jump with Carolina expected to abandon the hybrid 3-4 the team employed at times last year. Beason will likely play the weak side, as he did in 2010. Charles Godfrey, who has excellent range for a strong safety, should once again anchor the secondary.

*Buccaneers-Panthers Preview* =============================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn't need a big performance from Josh Freeman to beat the Carolina Panthers in September. Given his recent efforts, Freeman seems likely to play a bigger role in this week's rematch.

The Buccaneers quarterback will try to lead his team to its first four-game win streak in four years Sunday in Charlotte.

In an inauspicious season debut, Freeman passed for 138 yards and Tampa Bay totaled 258 against Carolina on Sept. 9. The Buccaneers, though, came away with a 16-10 victory as their defense limited the Panthers to 10 rushing yards, intercepted Cam Newton twice and essentially put the game away with a goal-line stand late in the fourth quarter.

The Bucs (5-4) still stumbled to a 1-3 start, but Freeman has since powered their surge, throwing for 13 touchdowns and posting a 115.9 rating in the last five games. He hasn't been picked off in his last 151 attempts.

"I think he understands better what we're doing and what we're asking of him," coach Greg Schiano said. "He's playing within himself. He's not trying to make plays. He's just trusting his training and the plays come when you're as talented as Josh Freeman is."

Freeman went 14 of 20 for 210 yards and a pair of TDs in a 34-24 win over San Diego last week. Tampa Bay has averaged 37.5 points in its last four victories and has scored at least 28 points in a team-record five consecutive games.

The Bucs also got a blocked punt return for a score from Adam Heyward and an 83-yard interception return for a TD from Leonard Johnson versus the Chargers.

"What we're trying to do is get guys loose and playing free, knowing what they're doing instead of having to think about it," Schiano said.

Tampa Bay, seeking its first four-game win streak since Nov. 2-30, 2008, has gone 1-3 in its last four visits to Charlotte.

The most recent of those was a 48-16 Panthers win Dec. 24 as Newton passed for three TDs and ran for a 49-yard score.

The Panthers, though, come in having lost six of seven and a 36-14 defeat to Denver on Sunday led to another change, as the team fired special teams coordinator Brian Murphy the next day. Carolina let go general manager Marty Hurney on Oct. 22.

"This is a production-based business, and in the end, winning and losing is what it comes down to," coach Ron Rivera said.

To get that much-needed win, the Panthers could use a much better performance by the offensive line. Carolina gave up seven sacks last week, tied for third most in team history.

Recently signed guard Jeremy Bridges, who made 28 starts for Carolina from 2006-08, might replace struggling starter Jeff Byers on Sunday after Rivera said Byers was "exposed" by the Broncos.

Newton threw for two touchdowns for the second time this season last week but was intercepted twice, giving him five in the last four contests. The Panthers (2-7) were held to 14 or fewer points for the fifth time in 2012.

"It's very embarrassing, but things are going to change - hopefully," Newton said. "I can't keep saying that and not holding up to it, but there are brighter days ahead for the Carolina Panthers."

The Buccaneers won't have linebacker Quincy Black to help stop Newton after he suffered a neck injury in a collision with San Diego running back Ryan Mathews. Black was taken off on a cart and later released from the hospital but is still having issues with his left arm.

Cornerback Eric Wright's status is uncertain after he re-aggravated his Achilles' in last week's victory.

Doug Martin is 138 yards away from becoming the 11th player in Bucs history to rush for 1,000 yards, and the fourth to do so as a rookie. Martin had 95 yards on 24 carries in the first matchup with Carolina.
