KEY GAME INFORMATION
TORONTO: GUARDS: DeMAR DeROZAN has evolved from raw athlete into dangerous scorer. He gets to the line frequently enough that he's virtually guaranteed a 20-PPG average . . . There's some long-term worry with KYLE LOWRY. His stocky body type leaves little room for error on those contested threes he hits, and there's some question of motivation now that he's been paid. But he was so good last season, that the chances of a fall-off seem low . . . Along with being the primary back-up at point guard, GREIVIS VASQUEZ will play alongside Lowry at times to take ball-handling pressure off of him . . . LOUIS WILLIAMS should be closer to 100 percent in his second season off ACL surgery, though he's looking at a fourth guard role in Toronto. FORWARDS: AMIR JOHNSON will lead the rotation at the 4, providing rim protection, rebounding and hustle baskets . . . He's streaky, but uber dunker TERRENCE ROSS is reinventing himself as a three-point shooter . . . Stretch 4 PATRICK PATTERSON has added a corner three to supplement a below-the-rim game . . . TYLER HANSBROUGH's spastic style is a thing of beauty . . . JAMES JOHNSON returns to Toronto. He's more versatile than his doughy frame would suggest . . . Undersized big CHUCK HAYES will throw his weight around for 15 minutes a night . . . Draft night stunner BRUNO CABOCLO is likely headed for the D-League . . . Ditto DeANDRE DANIELS . . . Not too long ago multiple teams fought over LANDRY FIELDS, but those days are long gone. CENTERS: JONAS VALANCIUNAS still has to add some nuance to his game (such as making physical contact with a defender when he sets a screen) if he's going to get full-time minutes. But the big upside is still there . . . LUCAS NOGUEIRA, a 2013 first-rounder picked up from Atlanta, gives them a rim protector . . . GREG STIEMSMA was added in early September to provide depth at the center position.
WASHINGTON: GUARDS: JOHN WALL has improved tremendously over the past two seasons. His physical skills are off the chart, and now he's significantly cut back on head-scratching mistakes . . . It appears that BRADLEY BEAL is becoming the perfect running mate for Wall in the short and the long term. He continues to develop off-the-dribble skills to go along with his shooting. His broken wrist is expected to fully heal by late November . . . ANDRE MILLER is in more of a mentor role in Washington. He's 38 and averaged less than 17 minutes per night last season . . . GLEN RICE JR. tore up Summer League, but it's unlikely the gunner will become an efficient scorer . . . GARRETT TEMPLE gives them a defense-first option off the bench, but his playing time will be minimal again. FORWARDS: PAUL PIERCE takes Trevor Ariza's spot at the 3. He'll have much more space to work in, not that he's ever needed it . . . The Wizards will likely play it safe with NENE HILARIO's minutes during the regular season again. They'll need him fresh for the playoffs, and they have enough frontcourt depth to do it . . . Back surgery is going to keep MARTELL WEBSTER out for a huge chunk of the season. He's a question mark even after he returns . . . After a lost rookie season, OTTO PORTER should be able to break into this rotation, especially with Webster out . . . KRIS HUMPHRIES will provide some rebounding and energy behind Nen' . . . It's incredible that DREW GOODEN is still employed. CENTERS: MARCIN GORTAT made beautiful pick-and-roll music with Wall last year. There's no reason that shouldn't continue. Gortat is a fringe All-Star . . . DeJUAN BLAIR can mix it up for 20 minutes per night, especially against smaller 5's.

*Raptors-Wizards Preview* =========================

By JOHN KOSIK STATS Editor

Toronto At Washington, Game Three, 8:00 p.m. EDT

Despite losing seven of eight meetings entering their first-round series with Toronto, the Washington Wizards are in the enviable position of returning home with a 2-0 lead.

If the Raptors are to avoid falling into a seemingly insurmountable hole, they need to start crashing the boards and tame the Wizards' stellar play in the middle quarters when they tip off in Game 3 on Friday night in the nation's capital.

Toronto earned home-court advantage for this opening series, but it quickly became irrelevant against a Washington team that has dominated the glass 106-76 over the first two games while also enjoying a 117-77 scoring advantage in the second and third quarters.

The 61 rebounds the Raptors allowed in Game 1 eclipsed their regular season high for boards allowed by five.

"If being down 0-2 (doesn't) stimulate urgency, then I don't know what would," DeMar DeRozan told the club's website. "Nobody's ready to go home, nobody's ready to pack it up. We understand how bad we played these last two games and we want to do a lot better."

Bad doesn't even begin to describe it. The Wizards have limited Toronto to 15 offensive rebounds, including just five in a 117-106 victory in Game 2 on Tuesday, and have harassed the Raptors into shooting 27.7 percent (13 for 47) from 3-point range.

Toronto was eighth in the league with 726 3-pointers made.

"It's far from over," said DeRozan, the club's top scorer who had 20 points in Game 2. "Our confidence is still high. All we've got to do is take it game by game."

The Raptors could also use more from All-Star guard Kyle Lowry, who has been in foul trouble so far and left in the fourth quarter of Game 2 with what he called a shin contusion. Lowry, who plans to play Friday, is 5 of 20 with 13 points in the series.

"He's got to continue playing," coach Dwane Casey told the team's website. "He's a smart player. He's one of our smartest players. He understands that he can't put himself in that position, to put the team in that position, to take a foul.

"He's smarter than that. I know he'll do a better job the next game."

Washington's outstanding play north of the border came as a big surprise after it lost 15 of its final 19 away games in the regular season and nine of its previous 11 trips to Toronto - including twice in 2014-15.

The concern for Toronto now shifts to the Wizards' solid stretch at Verizon Center, where they've won nine of their last 11 and picked up signature victories against Atlanta, Portland and Memphis in that span.

"We've got to play like we're down 0-2," said Bradley Beal, who led five players in double figures with 28 points and helped Washington shoot 53.2 percent Tuesday. "Nothing changes. We can't stop being aggressive."

While the Raptors need to match the Wizards' aggressive play, they also need to keep John Wall from pushing the ball, which may seem like a Herculean task after the speedy point guard had 26 points and 17 assists - one shy of matching a career high - in Game 2.

"I think just with our pace of getting the ball up the court faster, it was tough for them to rotate," Wall said. "Me making some shots early on, not picking up my dribble and getting to the basket got guys open, got us open looks and we knocked them down."

Another loss will all but end it for the Raptors since no NBA team has ever rallied from an 0-3 hole.
