| |  | BOSTON: GUARDS: RAJON RONDO's name is etched on the trading block. Regardless of where he lands, his injured knee should be 100 percent healthy . . . With an improved three-point shot, AVERY BRADLEY has become a complete player. His defense guarantees minutes regardless . . . MARCUS SMART seems to be waiting in the wings for a Rondo trade. In the meantime, he'll back up both guard spots. Just like in college, he'll be brilliant at times, but inconsistent . . . Local product PHIL PRESSEY will stick around as a No. 3 point guard . . . EVAN TURNER was a disaster in Indy. He'll have a tough time making this rotation . . . MARCUS THORNTON was acquired as a trade throw-in. The Celtics don't have big plans for the remorseless gunner. FORWARDS: He's isn't a legitimate No. 1 option, but JEFF GREEN will be the go-to guy again. He hasn't been able to handle the extra defensive attention, becoming increasingly inefficient . . . He has plenty of limitations on both ends of the court, but JARED SULLINGER is a crafty scorer. He'll get close to starter minutes as the Celtics search for offense . . . BRANDON BASS will see time at the 4 and the 5. He's made a pledge to improve offensively, but more likely he'll be a defensive presence and a screen-setter . . . JAMES YOUNG missed most of the summer healing a neck injury. He's going to do some damage running the floor, but he doesn't have the skills for the half-court game in the NBA . . . GERALD WALLACE is playing out the string. CENTERS: KELLY OLYNYK has the most upside in this frontcourt. His rare mobility and skill set for a 7-footer made a difference last year. It's just a question of whether he can hold up defensively down low . . . TYLER ZELLER gives them another solid 7-footer who opposing defenses have to account for. He'll fit well in head coach Brad Stevens' system . . . JOEL ANTHONY isn't going to get off the bench. | | WASHINGTON: GUARDS: JOHN WALL has improved tremendously over the past two seasons. His physical skills are off the chart, and now he's significantly cut back on head-scratching mistakes . . . It appears that BRADLEY BEAL is becoming the perfect running mate for Wall in the short and the long term. He continues to develop off-the-dribble skills to go along with his shooting. His broken wrist is expected to fully heal by late November . . . ANDRE MILLER is in more of a mentor role in Washington. He's 38 and averaged less than 17 minutes per night last season . . . GLEN RICE JR. tore up Summer League, but it's unlikely the gunner will become an efficient scorer . . . GARRETT TEMPLE gives them a defense-first option off the bench, but his playing time will be minimal again. FORWARDS: PAUL PIERCE takes Trevor Ariza's spot at the 3. He'll have much more space to work in, not that he's ever needed it . . . The Wizards will likely play it safe with NENE HILARIO's minutes during the regular season again. They'll need him fresh for the playoffs, and they have enough frontcourt depth to do it . . . Back surgery is going to keep MARTELL WEBSTER out for a huge chunk of the season. He's a question mark even after he returns . . . After a lost rookie season, OTTO PORTER should be able to break into this rotation, especially with Webster out . . . KRIS HUMPHRIES will provide some rebounding and energy behind Nen' . . . It's incredible that DREW GOODEN is still employed. CENTERS: MARCIN GORTAT made beautiful pick-and-roll music with Wall last year. There's no reason that shouldn't continue. Gortat is a fringe All-Star . . . DeJUAN BLAIR can mix it up for 20 minutes per night, especially against smaller 5's. |

John Wall has been especially frustrating on the offensive end for opponents in recent games, and it peaked with him taking a Christmas Day punch.
It's also resulted in some of the most efficient team basketball by the Washington Wizards over the past few weeks as they try to keep pace with the best in the Eastern Conference.
Things are about to get difficult with a five-game trip against the West, but they have one final tune-up Saturday night at home against the Boston Celtics.
The Wizards (20-8) earned Thursday's 102-91 win in New York behind 24 points and 11 assists from Wall, who appeared to be punched in the back of the neck by Quincy Acy during a fourth-quarter altercation following Wall's spinning layup. Wall was slapped with a technical foul while Acy was ejected and later suspended one game for his flagrant foul.
"I'm just a feisty guy that likes to compete," Wall said. "And I want to win games."
There's been plenty of that while Boston continues to struggle.
The Celtics (10-17) have lost six of seven on the road with the only win coming against league-worst Philadelphia. Their most heated game in that time was a 133-132 double-overtime loss in Washington on Dec. 8, capping a split back-to-back set between the teams to open the season series.
Since the 101-93 loss in Boston on Dec. 7, the Wizards are 7-2 as Wall has averaged 18.9 points and 11.3 assists. Those aren't drastic departures from his season marks of 18.0 and 10.5, but he's shot 53.0 percent in that time after making 42.3 percent through his first 19 games.
Washington led the Knicks by as many as 22 and never trailed. Bradley Beal added 17 points for the Wizards, who had their top five of Wall, Beal, Paul Pierce, Nene and Marcin Gortat starting together for the first time this season.
Nene returned to the starting lineup after a 15-game stretch on which he missed six and played as a reserve in nine. He was 6 of 8 from the floor and is shooting 55.2 percent over eight games after hitting 45.5 percent in his first 13.
"We came out with a lot of energy, ready to go from the start," Beal said, "and it's just going to continue to get better and better as the season goes on."
The upcoming trip should be a good proving ground with the five games coming against half of the West's top 10 teams - Houston, Dallas, Oklahoma City, San Antonio and New Orleans.
The Wizards have been a solid defensive team all season, evidenced by their 99.6 points allowed per 100 possessions - among the top marks in the league. An elite offensive element has also emerged. They've committed an East-low 10.0 turnovers per game since Dec. 15, and over the 7-2 stretch, they've been among the NBA leaders with a 48.3-percent shooting mark.
That's something the Celtics might need to slow down to end a three-game skid. Friday's 109-107 home loss to Brooklyn came despite a solid shooting day (51.7 percent).
Marcus Smart made his second career start, both coming since the trade of Rajon Rondo. The rookie guard still isn't factoring much into the offense, but coach Brad Stevens is pleased with the defensive intensity he brings.
"He got his hands on a lot of balls," Stevens said. "I thought he was pretty good defensively all day."
Smart scored a career-high 23 in the last meeting in Washington while Jeff Green had 28 and is averaging 25.0 over his last five games in the series.
Against the Nets, Green (22 points) and Jared Sullinger (19) led the way after a two-game stretch in which the forward pair totaled 26 points.
Pierce, facing the Celtics for the seventh time since leaving Boston before last season, is averaging 22.0 points and shooting 68.2 percent in two meetings this season.
Wall has averaged 21.5 points and 15.5 assists in those games.
