| | | CHICAGO: GUARDS: There's no medical reason why DERRICK ROSE can't be 100 percent healthy this year. But, as we saw in abbreviated action last season, his confidence may never come back . . . JIMMY BUTLER will still play major minutes this year, though Chicago's added depth on the wing means he's no longer a candidate to lead the league in playing time . . . KIRK HINRICH will return to a straight back-up role. His defense guarantees him minutes at both guard spots in a reserve role . . . TONY SNELL was inconsistent as a rookie, but has the defensive skill set to play solid minutes . . . AARON BROOKS gives the Bulls a more offense-heavy option to lead the second unit. He has his work cut out for him to claim the role D.J. Augustin held last season. FORWARDS: Despite the rough end to his Lakers career, PAU GASOL still has something left in the tank. He will see fewer minutes in a deep Bulls frontcourt, but he's a great fit on the offensive end . . . It seems like only a matter of time before MIKE DUNLEAVY relinquishes his starting spot. The Bulls now have plenty of shooters on this roster . . . TAJ GIBSON will reprise his sixth-man role. He'll be one of the league's top reserves; talent-wise he's a borderline All-Star . . . Rookie DOUG McDERMOTT will supplant Dunleavy once he grasps head coach Tom Thibodeau's defensive concepts. McDermott is an elite shooter who can get by defensively . . . NIKOLA MIROTIC might have some growing pains, but the Euro star can play the 3 or stretch-4 and has a very good offensive game. CENTERS: JOAKIM NOAH is an elite center, as he's outstanding defensively and has developed into one of the best passing big men in the NBA. The Bulls will do what they can to keep him fresh for the postseason, a luxury they have with Gasol and Mirotic adding depth to the frontcourt rotation. NAZR MOHAMMED is back as a big body with the ability to consistently keep the bench warm. | | WASHINGTON: GUARDS: JOHN WALL has improved tremendously over the past two seasons. His physical skills are off the chart, and now he's significantly cut back on head-scratching mistakes . . . It appears that BRADLEY BEAL is becoming the perfect running mate for Wall in the short and the long term. He continues to develop off-the-dribble skills to go along with his shooting. His broken wrist is expected to fully heal by late November . . . ANDRE MILLER is in more of a mentor role in Washington. He's 38 and averaged less than 17 minutes per night last season . . . GLEN RICE JR. tore up Summer League, but it's unlikely the gunner will become an efficient scorer . . . GARRETT TEMPLE gives them a defense-first option off the bench, but his playing time will be minimal again. FORWARDS: PAUL PIERCE takes Trevor Ariza's spot at the 3. He'll have much more space to work in, not that he's ever needed it . . . The Wizards will likely play it safe with NENE HILARIO's minutes during the regular season again. They'll need him fresh for the playoffs, and they have enough frontcourt depth to do it . . . Back surgery is going to keep MARTELL WEBSTER out for a huge chunk of the season. He's a question mark even after he returns . . . After a lost rookie season, OTTO PORTER should be able to break into this rotation, especially with Webster out . . . KRIS HUMPHRIES will provide some rebounding and energy behind Nen' . . . It's incredible that DREW GOODEN is still employed. CENTERS: MARCIN GORTAT made beautiful pick-and-roll music with Wall last year. There's no reason that shouldn't continue. Gortat is a fringe All-Star . . . DeJUAN BLAIR can mix it up for 20 minutes per night, especially against smaller 5's. |

*Bulls-Wizards Preview* =======================
By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer
Chicago (17-9) at Washington (19-7), 7:00 p.m. EDT
After an impressive playoff series win against the Chicago Bulls, the Washington Wizards are continuing to build on that success while compiling one of the top records in the Eastern Conference.
Now they'll have to face a much different Chicago team with Derrick Rose, Pau Gasol and an improved Jimmy Butler.
In their first meeting since their first-round series, the Wizards look to start a new winning streak at home Tuesday night against the surging Bulls.
Washington proved too much for the Bulls last postseason, winning their series in five games to advance to the second round for the first time since 2005. Bradley Beal averaged 19.8 points, John Wall had 18.8 and Nene added 17.8 in starring roles.
The Wizards (19-7) have responded this season by matching the best start in franchise history, set in 1974.
Wall has raised his level of play with a league-high 12.5 assists per game and a 48.3 field-goal percentage - far better than his 42.8 career mark - while the club has gone 9-2 this month.
The All-Star point guard has averaged 22.4 points in his last five regular-season meetings versus Chicago. He'll try to bounce back after finishing with 14 on 5-of-15 shooting in Sunday's 104-92 home loss to Phoenix that ended a six-game winning streak.
Washington averaged 110.9 points while shooting 50.7 percent from the field over the final seven of an eight-game run at home, but struggled offensively with a 41.0 field-goal percentage against the Suns.
Beal has been off target of late, scoring 13.3 per game on 28.9 percent shooting in his last three.
"We were just stagnant," Beal said after the Wizards had a season-low 11 assists. "We weren't fighting to get open."
After the Central Division-leading Bulls (18-9) scored just 90.0 per game last postseason, they've been a much more prolific offensive club this season with an average of 106.7 over their past 13.
Butler, who scored 13.6 per game versus Washington in the playoffs, could be headed toward his first All-Star selection with a team-high 22.1 points and a 48.6 field-goal percentage.
He's averaged 31.0 points and 8.7 rebounds over his last three games after scoring 27 with a season-high 11 boards and a career-best five blocks in Monday's 129-120 home victory over Toronto, the Bulls' sixth win in seven games.
Chicago had a franchise-record 49 points in the fourth quarter en route to its highest total in regulation since March 2011.
Rose looked strong with 29 points after missing the previous two games with an illness. He's averaged 26.4 points in his past eight meetings with the Wizards, though he hasn't faced them since Jan. 30, 2012, due to injury.
"We know we can always count on him, go to him. That's just the type of guy he is," Butler said. "He wants the pressure on him. He produces. He produced. I think we're going to keep on going back to him and he's going to do the same thing every night."
Taj Gibson had 10 points and seven boards Monday after missing two games with a right ankle injury. The power forward scored 19.8 per game over the last four in last season's playoff series against the Wizards.
The Bulls, an Eastern Conference-best 12-4 on the road, look to match their season high with a fourth straight win. They've dropped nine of 13 in the series, including playoffs, after winning seven in a row.
