| | | MEMPHIS: GUARDS: MIKE CONLEY has steadily improved every season. He's now a borderline All-Star point guard . . . TONY ALLEN is back as the defensive half of Memphis' SG platoon. He's a favorite of new head coach David Joerger, the mastermind of the Grizzlies' suffocating defense as an assistant . . . JERRYD BAYLESS is on the cusp of being one of the NBA's top sixth men. He's the only pure scorer they have on the perimeter . . . MIKE MILLER's minutes will be limited in the regular season, but he's still an effective bench option with his long-range shooting . . . Ultra-athletic rookie JAMAAL FRANKLIN seems like a future rotation guy if/when he grasps Joerger's defensive schemes. FORWARDS: ZACH RANDOLPH has taken a back seat to Marc Gasol, but Z-Bo is still a dangerous low-post scorer. He might give way to Ed Davis a little more often when Memphis needs defense . . . TAYSHAUN PRINCE brought another quality defender to Memphis at last season's trade deadline. He's no better than a fifth option on offense, though . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER is one of the only shooters Memphis has, and he seems ready for a bigger role after a strong postseason performance. If nothing else, he's the heir apparent to Prince . . . ED DAVIS seems ready for a bigger role, but it's not coming behind Randolph and Gasol. He's a back-up for at least one more season . . . JON LEUER gives the Grizzlies another savvy reserve big. CENTERS: He's a bit overrated defensively (good, but not Defensive Player of the Year good), but MARC GASOL has emerged as the centerpiece of the Memphis offense. He's one of the league's best passing big men, to go along with some skill in the post . . . KOSTA KOUFOS gives them another 7-footer who can move the ball, though his role will be much smaller than it was in Denver. | | WASHINGTON: GUARDS: Late last year, JOHN WALL finally started to fulfill his promising talent. He got wherever he wanted on the court, and the Wizards were very tough to guard with all the shooters surrounding him . . . BRADLEY BEAL and Wall should mesh beautifully. Beal is a potentially elite shooter, and he rebounds very well for a guard . . . ERIC MAYNOR is fully healthy again after tearing his ACL two seasons ago. He can play some alongside Wall, but mostly he'll be the league's best back-up point guard again . . . GLEN RICE JR. doesn't shoot it nearly as well as his father, but he's an athlete who could break into the rotation down the line . . . GARRETT TEMPLE is insurance in case Wall or Maynor goes down. FORWARDS: The Wizards need NENÊ’S low post offense. It seems inevitable that they'll have to cap his minutes . . . OTTO PORTER is likely to step into the starting lineup early on. They need his defense, as he can guard twos through fours . . . MARTELL WEBSTER will platoon with Porter, providing another outstanding shooter for Wall to feed . . . TREVOR ARIZA is playing out the string on an untradeable deal . . . TREVOR BOOKER has some use as a screener and low-post banger, but not much else . . . AL HARRINGTON may be inefficient, but he can score points in a hurry and is a decent defender'JAN VESELY is still trying to figure out the NBA, though it's too early to give up on his athleticism . . . CHRIS SINGLETON can defend, but he's no more than a garbage-time player due to his atrocious offense. CENTERS: EMEKA OKAFOR may be absurdly overpaid, but he's settled in as a passable starter who helps defensively and doesn't hurt on offense. He'll also miss the beginning of the season with a herniated disc . . . With Okafor's deal expiring at the end of the year, KEVIN SERAPHIN is auditioning to be Washington's center of the future. After showing promise two seasons ago, he was a disaster last season. |

*Grizzlies-Wizards Preview* ===========================
By ELI KABERON STATS Writer
Memphis (33-25) at Washington (31-28), 7:00 p.m. EDT
The Washington Wizards haven't won seven straight games since Gilbert Arenas and Larry Hughes were leading them to the playoffs.
Playing their best basketball of the season, the Wizards will try for their longest winning streak in over nine years when they host the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night.
Washington (31-28) has won six in a row for the first time since taking the final six games of the 2011-12 season, and a suddenly explosive offense has been the key. The team has averaged 112.5 points since the streak began Feb. 19 - the most in the Eastern Conference in that span. Prior to that, the Wizards were scoring 99.2 per game.
"From an offensive standpoint, we move the ball," coach Randy Whitman said following a 122-103 win over Philadelphia on Saturday. "When we don't predetermine what we are going to do, read what the defense is doing and move the ball, it's a thing of beauty."
Washington now has its sights set on winning seven straight for the first time since Jan. 2-15, 2005, a streak that came during a regular season that was ultimately the first of four consecutive campaigns ending with a playoff berth.
In the win against Philadelphia, the Wizards finished with 33 assists, one shy of a season high. Point guard John Wall matched a career best with 16 assists, most of them going to Trevor Ariza, who scored a career-high 40 points.
"We know we are on a good streak right now, but we have a tough game coming up against Memphis," Wall said.
For the Wizards to keep their run going, they'll need to slow the Grizzlies' inside duo of Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol. Randolph is coming off a 23-point, 14-rebound performance Friday in a 110-96 victory against Cleveland, while Gasol chipped in with 22 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
"It's just him, he can get himself going," Gasol said of Randolph. "He's so hard to stop that no matter what they try to do it's just Zach being Zach."
The two big men continue to set the tone for Memphis (33-25), along with point guard Mike Conley, who had 22 points and seven assists against the Cavaliers.
All three players have also been key to a solid defense for Memphis, which has allowed just 94.9 points per game this season - the fewest in a tough Western Conference.
"When Marc Gasol, Z-Bo (Randolph) and Mike are making shots and playing together on the defensive end, I like our odds," shooting guard Tony Allen said. "We are just a team that is going to go out there and take it one game at a time."
Memphis comes in having won seven of its last 10, including a victory Feb. 11 that was the first of three straight for the Wizards preceding their current surge.
Bradley Beal scored a career-high 37 points for Washington in that one, but he struggled down the stretch, missing five of his final six shots in the 92-89 loss. Gasol and Nick Calathes led the way for Memphis with 18 points apiece.
The Grizzlies have won four of the last five meetings between the teams, but the Wizards have won the last two in Washington. Memphis last won in the nation's capital with a 99-94 victory on Feb. 24, 2010.
