KEY GAME INFORMATION
PHILADELPHIA: GUARDS: MICHAEL CARTER-WILLIAMS wasn't the most legit Rookie of the Year, but he had his moments. He should be a little more efficient in his second season, and Philly certainly doesn't have a better alternative at the point. A shoulder injury will likely keep him sidelined for the first three weeks of the upcoming season . . . TONY WROTEN makes some highlight-reel plays and will likely start at the 2. He's too erratic to be in the rotation for a playoff team . . . As for the rest of the backcourt, ELLIOT WILLIAMS is looking to revive his career, and he's no worse than James Anderson and Hollis Thompson, who were starting for this team last season . . . Injuries have all but ended JASON RICHARDSON's career. He's on the final year of his deal, and might not play in 2014-15 after suffering a stress fracture to his right foot in late October . . . ALEXEY SHVED could play some quality minutes at both guard spots for this team. FORWARDS: The 2014 draft was deep, allowing Philly to land a first-round value in second-rounder K.J. McDANIELS. He's certainly better than anyone the Sixers trotted out at the 3-spot last season . . . HOLLIS THOMPSON could keep a starting job warm again . . . Another second-rounder, JERAMI GRANT, could play his way into the rotation. He's talented, but he's also something of a 'tweener, and like most Syracuse guys sitting in a 2-3 zone, Grant never learned how to e-on-one defense . . . ARNETT MOULTRIE has been something of a problem child in Philly, but he's good enough to make this rotation if he turns it around effort-wise . . . LUC RICHARD MBAH a MOUTE is here as a mentor for Joel Embiid. CENTERS: NERLENS NOEL is ready to make his debut. His collegiate rates suggest he'll rebound and block shots. The question marks are durability, functional strength and offensive game. He'll get to learn on the fly . . . JOEL EMBIID's foot problems will keep him out until at least midseason, and the Sixers will certainly play it safe with him. On raw talent, he's a future star. The questions are durability, and whether he can co-exist with Noel.
UTAH: GUARDS: TREY BURKE is likely the lead guard here, though it's really by default. He doesn't have the athleticism to make a lot of plays in the lane, and will have to rely on difficult shot-making . . . He continues to steadily improve, and there could be a bigger role available for ALEC BURKS. He'll have to develop a more consistent three-point shot before he really breaks out though . . . DANTE EXUM is an electrifying athlete, but he's making an enormous jump from essentially high school ball in Australia. He could be a gem in the long run, but don't expect him to do much as a rookie . . . TOURE' MURRY will likely play some garbage minutes. FORWARDS: He ascended to the alpha role in Utah, but GORDON HAYWARD had some struggles with the extra defensive attention. He should improve somewhat, as he knows what's coming, and has added a runner to his repertoire . . . DERRICK FAVORS will play more at the 4-spot this season, and he has the strength to power his way to easy baskets. He's a potential double-double guy . . . RODNEY HOOD had an up-and-down year at Duke despite his physical gifts. He has an NBA-caliber combination of size and athleticism, but right now he's a streaky shooter with a lot of rough edges on his game . . . TREVOR BOOKER is a solid second-unit big man, a defensive bruiser and good screener on offense . . . JEREMY EVANS can dunk, but provides little else . . . STEVE NOVAK will never be a full-time player, but he's still one of the league's elite shooters. CENTERS: He was disappointing last season, but ENES KANTER still has some upside on the offensive end of the floor. How he and Favors will mesh is yet to be seen . . . RUDY GOBERT is a shot-blocking fool, but still ultra-raw

*76ers-Jazz Preview* ====================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

Philadelphia (4-24) at Utah (9-20), 9:00 p.m. EDT

It didn't take long for the Philadelphia 76ers to fall back into the loss column, and their upcoming schedule could have them again piling up defeats.

The 76ers will try to bounce back from another tough loss by beating the Utah Jazz on the road for the first time in almost 10 years Saturday night.

While it owns the worst record in the NBA, Philadelphia (4-24) showed signs of life by beating Orlando and Miami in the first two of this season-high seven-game trip.

The 76ers, however, had their hopes of a 3-0 start to the swing dashed at Portland on Friday, falling behind for good midway through the first quarter in a 114-93 rout. They allowed the Trail Blazers to make a season-high 18 3-pointers, and coach Brett Brown was not pleased with the defensive lapses.

"When you know you're going to get hit, and you didn't really do the job you needed to do to give ourselves a chance, it's discouraging," Brown said.

Defensive issues will pose a major problem during the remainder of the trip. After facing the Jazz (9-20), the Sixers visit league-leading Golden State before back-to-back matchups with Phoenix and the Los Angeles Clippers - two more teams with winning records.

Visiting Utah certainly hasn't helped the 76ers over the years. They've lost 23 of their past 25 games there, including nine in a row since their last win Jan. 5, 2005.

The Jazz, however, have dropped seven of eight at home after winning three of their first five this season. They return to Salt Lake City after finishing a 3-3 trip with three wins in the last four games, including a 97-91 victory over Memphis on Monday.

"Being in situations like this is really good for us in the long run," said forward Gordon Hayward, who had 21 points. "Road trips like this are good for us. To put us in situations where there is adversity."

Utah hasn't had much trouble offensively against Philadelphia, averaging 105.7 points in the past nine home matchups.

Alec Burks led the way with 26 points off the bench in a 105-100 victory in the most recent meeting at EnergySolutions Arena on Feb. 12, while Gordon chipped in 22 with eight assists in a 104-92 win at Philadelphia on March 8.

Burks and Gordon combined for 44 points Monday, shooting 14 of 26 from the floor.

The 76ers could use another strong effort from Tony Wroten, who had 22 points on 7-for-13 shooting Friday after missing Tuesday's 91-87 victory over the Heat with a right knee sprain.

"It didn't surprise any of us that he was going to have that type of a game," Brown said.

The backup guard was even better in the last meeting with the Jazz, shooting 12 of 15 and finishing with 30 points and four steals. However, Michael Carter-Williams missed 11 of his 13 shots and had four points, nine assists and five steals.

The second-year guard, though, had 19 points and eight assists at Utah in February.
