| | | HOUSTON: GUARDS: JAMES HARDEN is a franchise player, and as one of the league's elite pick-and-roll threats, he and Dwight Howard have the potential to be dominant . . . Trade rumors will continue to circle JEREMY LIN, who isn't an off-the-ball threat to fit alongside Harden. He is, however, clearly a starting-caliber point guard . . . PATRICK BEVERLEY really shined in back-up minutes last year, and he's part of the reason that Lin is expendable. He's strong defensively, and he proved capable of running the second unit. He'll be one of the league's top back-up PGs if Lin stays . . . Rookie combo guard ISAIAH CANAAN will be developed as a spot-up shooter . . . REGGIE WILLIAMS is a roster filler . . . AARON BROOKS is around as a reclamation project . . . RONNIE BREWER provides a much-needed athletic perimeter defender. FORWARDS: CHANDLER PARSONS is an elite role player. He entered the league with the reputation as a pure athlete, but it's his ability to knock down the corner three that's made him so valuable in Houston . . . GREG SMITH looks like another great find for the Rockets. He's an athletic banger who can allow Dwight Howard to roam a bit on defense . . . DONATAS MOTIEJUNAS showed flashes as a rookie, but the stretch four looks like a situational role player for the foreseeable future . . . FRANCISCO GARCIA will lend a veteran presence to the second unit . . . Versatile TERRENCE JONES could be in for more minutes as the Rockets look for the right role players . . . OMRI CASSPI might be getting his last chance at the NBA. CENTERS: DWIGHT HOWARD should be much happier in Houston, though the Rockets still have to convince him that he can dominate as a pick-and-roll player. He should make everyone forget about his season with the Lakers . . . The fact is OMER ASIK just doesn't fit alongside Howard. But if he stays somewhat happy in Houston, he could be a valuable second-unit player . . . MARCUS CAMBY has latched on to chase a ring. | | UTAH: GUARDS: TREY BURKE is a savvy floor general who can shoot, but he's also short and a mediocre athlete (and we've seen how that's worked out for Brandon Knight). He'll step right in at the point, but immediate success is hardly guaranteed . . . ALEC BURKS is locked in at the two. He'll be able to hang in defensively, and he's a decent ball-handler and passer. His shaky jumper is an issue . . . BRANDON RUSH returns from an ACL tear and could emerge as the sixth man . . . JOHN LUCAS III is here as a Plan B at the point and to help mentor Burke a bit . . . IAN CLARK won't see a lot of action as a rookie, but he can play either guard spot. FORWARDS: DERRICK FAVORS will run into foul trouble, but he will be a nightly double-double threat and rim protector . . . GORDON HAYWARD becomes Utah's No. 1 option on offense. He'll struggle to create his own shot with defenses focusing on him, but he is a knock-down, three-point shooter who's improving off the dribble . . . MARVIN WILLIAMS is coming off heel surgery and will miss at least the first month of the season. He's not a part of Utah's long-term plans, but will likely see minutes due to the team's lack of depth . . . RICHARD JEFFERSON is a player/coach at this point in his career . . . JEREMY EVANS will be brainstorming for the dunk contest. CENTERS: ENES KANTER is a major upgrade over Al Jefferson as a defender and in the team concept on offense. He immediately becomes one of the league's better starting centers . . . ANDRIS BIEDRINS at least has a chance to reestablish himself as a capable back-up . . . RUDY GOBERT has freakish size, but he's a major project who is nowhere near ready to contribute. |

*Rockets-Jazz Preview* ======================
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer
Houston (2-0) at Utah (0-2), 9:00 p.m. EDT
A pair of close defeats have the Utah Jazz on the brink of their worst start in 34 years.
Facing the Houston Rockets isn't likely to help.
The Jazz will try to avoid opening a season with a third straight loss Saturday night and prevent the Rockets from their best start in five years.
Utah (0-2) opened the season with a 101-98 loss to Oklahoma City on Wednesday, and followed that with a much tougher defeat two days later. The Jazz surrendered the decisive 3-pointer with 0.7 seconds left to fall 87-84 at Phoenix.
Now, they're facing the possibility of starting a season with a three-game losing streak for the first time since going 0-4 in 1979-80 and recent matchups with the Rockets (2-0) haven't brought favorable results.
Utah has dropped three straight versus Houston by an average of 20.0 points. Snapping the streak might be even more important since the Jazz begin a four-game road trip Tuesday in Brooklyn before visiting Boston, Chicago and Toronto.
Coach Tyrone Corbin thinks improving the basics could get his team headed in the right direction after Utah totaled 43 turnovers while going 37 for 57 from the line through the first two games.
"And we missed our free throws," Corbin said. "We missed 10 again (Friday) so we've got to get better at those things. Young guys or whatever, we have to make free throws and we can't turn the ball over."
Derrick Favors has been a major culprit, coughing the ball up 10 times while sinking 5 of 9 free throws in two games, undermining his 29 points and 26 rebounds. The forward, who is stepping into a starting role, wasn't much of a factor in three meetings with the Rockets last season, averaging 8.0 points and 4.0 boards.
He's likely to find things much tougher under the basket dealing with Dwight Howard, who has 30 points and 42 rebounds through two games.
The All-Star center had 16 boards and 13 points Friday, while James Harden poured in 34 on 11-of-17 shooting in Houston's 113-105 victory over Dallas.
Harden has picked up where he left off last season, when he averaged a career-high 25.9 points per game after being acquired in a trade from Oklahoma City.
The Rockets hope the addition of Howard will help make them a championship contender after he had a disappointing stint with the Los Angeles Lakers. Howard's career-long struggles from the free-throw line have followed him to Houston. He missed his first six from the line against the Mavericks before finishing 5 of 12.
"I've just got to make them," said Howard, who averages 19.4 points and 12.4 rebounds in seven visits to Salt Lake City.
Houston seeks its first 3-0 start since 2008-09 and consecutive victories in Utah for the first time since a three-game win streak in 1993.
Harden is averaging 24.0 points over the past three meetings with the Jazz, including a 25-point performance on 8 of 15 from the floor in a 125-80 victory in the most recent meeting in Utah on Jan. 28.
