| | | BROOKLYN: GUARDS: DERON WILLIAMS is healthy and got a much-improved supporting cast to work with. He could re-enter the NBA's best point guard discussion . . . JOE JOHNSON won't have the ballin his hands as much as he used to in Atlanta. It might give him a chance to concentrate on regaining his stroke as one of the NBA's best shooters . . . MARSHON BROOKS will look to settle in as a high-scoring sixth man. He'll be trade bait for most of the season . . . After a disastrous year in Chicago, C.J. WATSON will be asked to spell Williams for a few minutes a night . . . KEITH BOGANS is still kicking around as a second unit glue guy . . . TYSHAWN TAYLOR is an at-times out-of-control combo guard, but the rookie could threaten Watson's role at some point. FORWARDS: KRIS HUMPHRIES' contract was structured to make him easier to trade. He'll rebound and get his put-backs, and the Nets will likely showcase him a bit . . . GERALD WALLACE is slowing down, and now that he's signed his last big NBA contract he might not have much incentive to live up to his 'Crash' nickname. Brooklyn has no choice but to give him heavy minutes considering their investment . . . MIRZA TELETOVIC is a veteran stretch four. Consider him a penniless man's Channing Frye . . . TORNIKE SHENGELIA played himself into a roster spot this summer. He's a mediocre athlete, but a cagey scorer with a high basketball IQ . . . JOSH CHILDRESS and JERRY STACKHOUSE were added in September for depth . . . REGGIE EVANS will flop unconvincingly, punch opponents in the jewels and bring other 'tough guy' intangibles. CENTERS: BROOK LOPEZ had been remarkably durable before last year's foot injury, and he should be fully healed by the start of training camp. He's gifted offensively, but will continue to grab relatively few rebounds and generally get fried defensively. He's also a candidate to be traded midseason if another franchise can stomach his max contract . . . As insurance, former Wizards big man ANDRAY BLATCHE was brought in. He could be the team's best interior defender, able to play either the four or five spot. | | UTAH: GUARDS: MO WILLIAMS will get a crack at running the point in Utah. He's more of a combo guard, but he'll do fine in an offense that revolves around the bigs . . . RANDY FOYE is a gunning combo guard who will step in as Utah's sixth man . . . ALEC BURKS started to come on late last year, making Raja Bell expendable. He'll come off the bench, but if he can start knocking down perimeter shots, he's in for a much bigger role . . . Yeah, that's right, EARL WATSON and JAMAAL TINSLEY are both still around. And they're both riding pine in Salt Lake . . . KEVIN MURPHY is a cagey scorer from tiny Tennessee Tech (no word on his Golden Tee skills). FORWARDS: PAUL MILLSAP was Utah's best all-around player last season and will be playing for a new contract. He should be able to keep his minutes despite Utah's young bigs behind him . . . GORDON HAYWARD will probably slide to the two. He has a chance for a breakout year after a strong finish to 2011-12 . . . MARVIN WILLIAMS gets a fresh start in Utah after a disappointing run in Atlanta. He figures to have a similar complementary role with the Jazz . . . DERRICK FAVORS is a long-term solution in the frontcourt. His offensive game is coming on, and he's already a far better defender than Al Jefferson . . . Slam dunk champion JEREMY EVANS and DeMARRE CARROLL will both provide energy off the bench. CENTERS: Like Millsap, AL JEFFERSON will hit free agency after the season. He's an incredibly limited player, a great scorer in the low post, but incapable of any other contributions and a huge liability on defense . . . ENES KANTER is still a few years away from a starting job. He has some rough edges to his game, but really had no problem adjusting to the physicality of the NBA. |

*Nets-Jazz Preview* ===================
Brooklyn (42-30) at Utah (37-36), 9:00 p.m. EDT
While the Utah Jazz are surging as they push for the playoffs, Deron Williams still is searching for his first victory over his former club.
The Brooklyn Nets guard is 0-3 against the Jazz as he makes his second trip to Salt Lake City as a visitor in Saturday night's matchup.
Utah (37-36) ended a nine-game road slide with Friday's 105-95 victory over Portland. The Jazz closed on a 19-3 run as they pulled even with the Lakers for the Western Conference's eighth and final playoff spot, with Utah currently owning the tiebreaker.
"If we lay everything we have on the floor and come up short, we can deal with that," coach Tyrone Corbin said. "But we can't hold anything back at this point."
Next up as the Jazz try for their third four-game win streak of the season is a visit by Williams, the franchise's first-round pick in 2005. The point guard led the team to four straight postseason appearances from 2007-10 before being dealt to the Nets on Feb 23, 2011.
Williams has helped guide the Nets to their first playoff berth in six seasons. Brooklyn (42-30) trails first-place New York by 3 1/2 games in the Atlantic Division, but leads Chicago and Atlanta in the race for the East's No. 4 seed and home-court advantage in a first-round playoff series.
Utah fans figure to give Williams a hard time after how he was treated in his first game back in Salt Lake City. He was booed every time he touched the ball and missed 12 of 15 shots and finished with 16 points, five assists and five turnovers in a 107-94 defeat Jan. 14, 2012.
Williams is averaging 15.7 points on 31.3 percent shooting in three meetings against the Jazz.
The most recent one was Dec. 18 in Brooklyn. The Nets blew a 13-point halftime lead in a 92-90 loss as Williams was held to 14 points.
The Jazz currently have another guard named Williams who came up big Friday. Mo Williams scored 26 of his 28 points in the second half while Paul Millsap had 25 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double since March 4.
"Everybody came out focused, especially in the second half. We didn't do a good job in the first but in the second half we came out with a different attitude," Millsap said.
Brooklyn trailed by 17 points at halftime of Friday's 109-87 loss at Denver. Deron Williams had a team-high 19 points for the Nets, who are 4-2 on this eight-game trip.
"We've got a game tomorrow night to win or lose," P.J. Carlesimo said. "So we just got to go into Utah, it's the end of the first portion of the trip. They're on a back-to-back too."
Brook Lopez had a difficult night with 11 points on 4-of-15 shooting. Lopez's 11.0 points per game at Utah marks his lowest road average against a West foe.
The Nets are 11-8 in the second half of back-to-back games, but just 1-3 when it happens in consecutive road contests. The Jazz, who have taken seven of the last eight meetings, are 3-1 at home when they have played on the road the previous day.
