KEY GAME INFORMATION
DALLAS: GUARDS: MONTA ELLIS will be the Mavs' lead guard again, taking on even more ball-handling responsibilities with their black hole at point guard. In his first season in Dallas, he proved to be the perfect fit running pick-and-rolls in head coach Rick Carlisle's system . . . The Mavericks are in trouble if they have to rely on RAYMOND FELTON, a fringe rotation-caliber player even in his brief 'prime,' but he might end up the starter by default . . . JAMEER NELSON's poor defense makes him difficult to pair with Ellis, but offensively he's the best option . . . DEVIN HARRIS is a superior defender and a dangerous offensive player, but the questions are durability and how well he fits alongside Ellis . . . GAL MEKEL struggled offensively, but his defense is going to earn him minutes at both guard spots. He's a borderline rotation guy. FORWARDS: DIRK NOWITZKI came back on a discounted deal, but at age 36 he still has plenty left in the tank. He's a legit All-Star-caliber player . . . Dallas pried CHANDLER PARSONS from Houston, giving the team someone to run the floor with Ellis and shoot some corner threes in the half-court set. He figures to have a slightly smaller role than he did with the Rockets though . . . Last season in Utah, RICHARD JEFFERSON reestablished himself as a rotation player by adding a consistent three-point shot . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU gives the Mavs an energy guy who can play both forward spots . . . JAE CROWDER will have to fight to keep his spot in the rotation. He has yet to put it together offensively and he needs to add a three-point shot . . . GREG SMITH won't make a significant contribution unless his knee proves healthy. CENTERS: Durability is an underlying issue, but the Mavs were thrilled to bring TYSON CHANDLER back into the fold. He'll be much happier in Carlisle's defensive system than he was in Mike Woodson's switch-everything approach . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT will play fewer minutes behind Chandler as an extra rim protector and rebounder.
TORONTO: GUARDS: DeMAR DeROZAN has evolved from raw athlete into dangerous scorer. He gets to the line frequently enough that he's virtually guaranteed a 20-PPG average . . . There's some long-term worry with KYLE LOWRY. His stocky body type leaves little room for error on those contested threes he hits, and there's some question of motivation now that he's been paid. But he was so good last season, that the chances of a fall-off seem low . . . Along with being the primary back-up at point guard, GREIVIS VASQUEZ will play alongside Lowry at times to take ball-handling pressure off of him . . . LOUIS WILLIAMS should be closer to 100 percent in his second season off ACL surgery, though he's looking at a fourth guard role in Toronto. FORWARDS: AMIR JOHNSON will lead the rotation at the 4, providing rim protection, rebounding and hustle baskets . . . He's streaky, but uber dunker TERRENCE ROSS is reinventing himself as a three-point shooter . . . Stretch 4 PATRICK PATTERSON has added a corner three to supplement a below-the-rim game . . . TYLER HANSBROUGH's spastic style is a thing of beauty . . . JAMES JOHNSON returns to Toronto. He's more versatile than his doughy frame would suggest . . . Undersized big CHUCK HAYES will throw his weight around for 15 minutes a night . . . Draft night stunner BRUNO CABOCLO is likely headed for the D-League . . . Ditto DeANDRE DANIELS . . . Not too long ago multiple teams fought over LANDRY FIELDS, but those days are long gone. CENTERS: JONAS VALANCIUNAS still has to add some nuance to his game (such as making physical contact with a defender when he sets a screen) if he's going to get full-time minutes. But the big upside is still there . . . LUCAS NOGUEIRA, a 2013 first-rounder picked up from Atlanta, gives them a rim protector . . . GREG STIEMSMA was added in early September to provide depth at the center position.

*Mavericks-Raptors Preview* ===========================

By BRETT HUSTON STATS Senior Editor

Dallas (11-5) at Toronto (13-2), 7:30 p.m. EDT

It wasn't that hard to imagine the Dallas Mavericks being one of the NBA's best offensive teams after adding Chandler Parsons and a pair of other significant pieces in the offseason.

With a rotation that's largely unchanged, the Toronto Raptors' rise was a little harder to see coming.

The league's two highest-scoring teams meet north of the border Friday night with the Raptors seeking their first seven-game winning streak since Vince Carter's heyday.

Dallas (11-5) was eighth in points per game and fourth in field-goal percentage last season, and after adding Parsons, Jameer Nelson and reacquiring Tyson Chandler, it's no surprise to see Rick Carlisle's club leading the league with 109.3 points per game.

The Raptors' emergence as one of the NBA's best offenses is turning a few more heads. Lou Williams was the only prominent addition to the top eight of Toronto's rotation, but the reserve guard has been a big reason the Raptors (13-2) have jumped from 13th in points per game (101.3) to second (108.0).

Williams burned his former team for 22 points in 26 minutes Wednesday, making him one of three Raptors with 20-plus in a 126-115 win at Atlanta. DeMar DeRozan led the way with 27, the third player to lead Toronto in scoring in as many games.

"Three nights in a row it's been somebody else stepping up," said Williams, who's averaged 24.3 points in his last four games. "It just shows the depth and the character of this team."

The Raptors haven't won seven straight since a nine-game run March 22-April 9, 2002. Toronto won 11 of 12 late in that season, a franchise-best stretch that was matched against the Hawks as seven Raptors scored in double figures.

"That's what it's going to take to win," DeRozan said of Toronto's scoring depth. "Honestly, that's what it's all about."

Dallas also has a six-game winning streak this season, but it was in danger of losing a third straight game Wednesday before rallying past New York 109-102 in overtime.

Like Williams did against his former club for Toronto, Chandler came up big against the Knicks. The Mavericks' big man had 17 points and 25 rebounds, helping Dallas outscore New York 50-24 in the paint.

Dirk Nowitzki had 30 points on 11-of-24 shooting, but he and Parsons combined to go 2 for 16 from 3-point range. The Mavericks are shooting 20 percent from beyond the arc in their last three games.

"I mean, we're not playing really well right now. I think that's pretty obvious," Nowitzki told the Mavericks' official website. "And we just had to find a way to steal this one, really."

The visit to Toronto is Dallas' first stop on a four-game trip, and there are a few signs it might not be a pleasant one beyond the Raptors' 9-1 home record and the potential absence of Nelson due to back spasms.

The Mavericks have averaged 117.0 points in nine games against teams with losing records, but that number falls to just 99.3 against those at .500 or better. They've scored 94.7 points per game and shot 39.2 percent in their last three road games against clubs with winning records.

Nowitzki is shooting 40.4 percent against winning teams and 59.8 percent against sub-.500 clubs.

He's missed two of Dallas' last three against Toronto, all losses. Carlisle opted to rest him during a busy stretch when the Mavericks visited Air Canada Centre on Jan. 22, and they certainly could've used him. DeRozan had a career-high 40 points in a 93-85 win.

Toronto overcame deficits of at least 19 points in both victories against Dallas last season.
