| |  | NEW ORLEANS: GUARDS: JRUE HOLIDAY is perfect for head coach Monty Williams. He defends and can create in the half-court set . . . ERIC GORDON didn't want New Orleans to match his deal two offseasons ago, and he spent last year letting everyone know it. If healthy and motivated (two big 'ifs') he's a 20-point scorer . . . TYREKE EVANS will get some starts at the three and come off the bench at times. Either way, he is the kind of aggressive (if sometimes out-of- control) offensive threat this lineup needs . . . Even after an injury-filled season, ANTHONY MORROW's shooting could earn him a rotation spot . . . AUSTIN RIVERS was overmatched last season, to the point where he didn't seem to belong in the NBA. It's tough to see the win-now Pels relying on him often. FORWARDS: ANTHONY DAVIS was overwhelmed by Williams' complex defensive schemes, and opponents consistently took him out of plays with screen-and-rolls at him. Williams will surely use some of his new talent to allow Davis to roam more on defense . . . RYAN ANDERSON's defensive shortcomings could lead to a drop in playing time, but his shooting and the spacing it creates is too valuable to this offense . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU will likely split time with Tyreke Evans at the three. He's more valuable defensively, and is starting to show some signs of improvement on offense . . . DARIUS MILLER has a shot to break into the rotation if his defense improves . . . LANCE THOMAS is a long athlete who is capable of playing some good defensive minutes . . . ARINZE ONUAKU most likely won't see the floor for more than a minute at a time. CENTERS: JASON SMITH might be their most complete defensive big man, and that should be enough to earn him solid minutes . . . GREG STIEMSMA is more off a warm body, but he at least gives them another rim-protecting option . . . JEFF WITHEY will spend most of the season on the bench learning Williams' complex schemes. | | TORONTO: GUARDS: KYLE LOWRY was banged up last season, but he enters this year healthy and has the potential to be one of the league's best two-way point guards . . . DEMAR DEROZAN does a nice job attacking, but he's a flawed player unless he develops a jump shot . . . The Raptors want TERRENCE ROSS to attack the basket more often. But whether he develops a three-point shot could determine where he fits into this rotation . . . After a disastrous season in Indiana, D.J. AUGUSTIN will have to earn his rotation spot. Toronto could use his shooting, though . . . DWIGHT BUYCKS comes back from Europe to back up Lowry . . . Versatile JULYAN STONE is an interesting bit piece, as he reunites with GM Masai Ujiri, who brought him to Denver. FORWARDS: Despite all that talent, RUDY GAY's poor shot selection and disinterested defense will have him on the trading block . . . AMIR JOHNSON will get another chance at full-time minutes. Despite some inconsistency, he still has the upside to be a good rebounder and shot-blocker . . . TYLER HANSBROUGH brings toughness and a decent mid-range jumper. He's a second-unit talent, but could challenge Johnson for minutes . . . LANDRY FIELDS is a well-compensated reserve . . . STEVE NOVAK gives them a legitimate shooter among the second unit . . . Toronto will try to shake some of that upside out of AUSTIN DAYE . . . QUINCY ACY will move to the three, likely making this a redshirt year. CENTERS: JONAS VALANCIUNAS is set to become Toronto's new centerpiece. Talented enough for them to run the offense through him, he's rapidly improving on both ends of the court . . . AARON GRAY will stick around as a decent back-up, a 7-footer who can get in the way defensively. |

After a tough five-game road trip, Toronto Raptors coach Dwane Casey said it's only natural for his players to be looking forward to some time off over the All-Star break.
That doesn't mean he'll accept anything less than their best effort until then.
Atlantic Division-leading Toronto plays the first of two home games before the break Monday night while seeking a fifth straight victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Raptors (26-24) finished their trip 2-3 after falling 118-105 to the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday. DeMar DeRozan, who averaged 26.4 points on the trip and will play in the All-Star game, scored 36 and added eight assists. Kyle Lowry chipped in 19 points.
Casey refused to blame fatigue for Toronto's apparent lack of aggressiveness and inability to be physical in the paint.
"Everybody is tired right now," Casey said. "Everybody is preparing for the (All-Star) break, but it's not here yet. We have business to take care of. I just told the guys, 'We have to go back and take care of home.'"
The Raptors have won eight of 10 at Air Canada Centre and also will host Atlanta on Wednesday prior to the break. Casey is hoping they can bounce back and head into the hiatus with some momentum, especially since his improved team has aspirations of qualifying for the playoffs for the first time since 2007-08.
"We're a developing young team and we're getting better," Casey said. "We're doing some good things, but some things we've got to learn to do better. We're happy where we are, but we're not satisfied."
Toronto has won six of the last seven meetings with New Orleans, which earned its only victory in that stretch on Jan. 17, 2011.
Anthony Davis was held to two points on 1-of-6 shooting in the most recent matchup exactly a year ago, while Lowry finished with 14 points and 10 assists in the Raptors' 102-89 home victory.
The Pelicans (22-28) began a three-game trip with a 93-81 loss to Brooklyn on Sunday after winning six of their previous eight. Davis, averaging 25.7 points and shooting 61.2 percent over his last three, finished with 24 and nine rebounds.
New Orleans was forced to the road for its final games before the break due to preparations for All-Star weekend being held in its home arena.
"We just didn't play (well) tonight," Davis said. "We know it. Coaches know it. Everybody knows it."
The Pelicans were held to a season-low 28 points in the first half and trailed by as many as 27 before pulling within seven in the final quarter. They shot 36.1 percent for the game and hit only 15 of 27 free throws.
Tyreke Evans, who had been dealing with a rib injury recently, didn't play because of what coach Monty Williams said was an internal team issue and did not elaborate. His status for this contest is unclear.
"First four or five possessions we just didn't run our offense with any kind of zeal the way that we've been running it at home," Williams said.
New Orleans has lost its last three visits to Toronto.
