KEY GAME INFORMATION
ATLANTA: LAST SEASON: 29-53, missed playoffs.
COACH: Lloyd Pierce (second season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Trae Young (19.1 ppg, 8.1 apg), G Kevin Huerter (9.7 ppg), F De'Andre Hunter (No. 5 overall pick), F John Collins (19.5 ppg, 9.8 rpg), C Damian Jones (5.4 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: C Dewayne Dedmon, G Kent Bazemore, F Omari Spellman
KEY ADDITIONS: Hunter, Jones, F Cam Reddish, F Jabari Parker, G Evan Turner, G Allen Crabbe, F Chandler Parsons, C Bruno Fernando.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Young and Collins are two of the NBA's top young players, while Huerter shows plenty of promise, so the key to this season will be how well they mesh with two more first-round picks, Hunter and No. 10 choice Reddish. Hunter figures to start right away, while Reddish will get plenty of playing time off the bench. Also keep an eye on Parker, the No. 2 overall pick in 2014 by the Milwaukee Bucks. While he has yet to develop into the star everyone expected, Parker is still just 24 years old and has averaged 15.1 points per game over his five-year career. The Hawks, who are focused on player development, hope they can flush out Parker's game. Finally, the Hawks will send out 42-year-old Vince Carter for his record 22nd ' and final ' season in the NBA. Carter showed last season he's still got game, but he won't get as many minutes in his last hurrah as he serves more of a coach-mentor role to all the young players.
OUTLOOK: The Hawks showed promise in Pierce's first season but this franchise is still in the midst of a major rebuilding job. Atlanta might have an outside shot at slipping into the playoffs, but would probably be better off getting another crack at the draft lottery. General manager Travis Schlenk has been acquiring over-priced players that other teams wanted to get off the books. Parsons ($25.1 million), Turner ($18.6 million) and Crabbe ($18.5 million) are in the final year of their contracts, which means 2020 is the year to really start paying attention to the Hawks.
SAN ANTONIO: LAST SEASON: 48-34, lost 4-3 to Denver in Western Conference first round.
COACH: Gregg Popovich (24th season, 1245-575).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Dejounte Murray (missed last season with knee injury), G Bryn Forbes (11.8 ppg), G DeMar DeRozan (21.2), F LaMarcus Aldridge (21.3), C Jakob Poeltl (5.5).
KEY LOSSES: None
KEY ADDITIONS: F DeMarre Carroll, F Trey Lyles, G/F Keldon Johnson, F Luka Samanic
PLAYERS TO WATCH: DeRozan spent most of last season processing a trade that unexpectedly sent him to the Spurs and away from the Toronto Raptors, the franchise he pledged his devotion to ' then watched them win a title. Murray's injury also forced DeRozan to become the team's main distributor for the first time in his career. DeRozan set a career high with 6.2 assists per game but also had his second-lowest scoring average in six seasons. Murray is back and spent the offseason sending video of specific plays to show the 30-year-old guard how he could help him score more easily.
OUTLOOK: The Spurs continue to get younger and faster while trying to maintain their veteran presence and corporate knowledge. The latter received a huge boost with the addition of Hall of Famer Tim Duncan as an assistant coach. Duncan's knowledge of the Spurs' system, work ethic and camaraderie should help the team's development as it attempts to an establish an identity separate from but similar to the Big Three era spearheaded by Duncan that led to five NBA championships. Murray's return along with the return of White, expected emergence of Lonnie Walker IV and addition of Carroll should make the Spurs among the best wing defenses in the league.
PREVIEW
Up-and-down Spurs hope Hawks cure their ills

Will the real San Antonio Spurs step to the front, please? The Spurs have been great at some times and bad at others, and have been as difficult to predict as any team NBA team in recent seasons.

So which San Antonio team will show up Friday when the Spurs host the Atlanta Hawks? It's a wait-and-see situation.

Wins over the likes of Milwaukee, Boston and Toronto -- the latter two on the road -- have followers thinking San Antonio has turned the proverbial corner, but the fact is that the Spurs have been head-scratchingly inconsistent this season.

The Spurs (17-22) return home after going 2-2 on the road over an eight-day stretch and a 106-100 loss at Miami on Wednesday. DeMar DeRozan led San Antonio with 30 points on 12-of-14 shooting in the setback.

"The game was right there," DeRozan told reporters afterward. "If we wouldn't been able to score on two or three possessions, but it just got away from us. There's a lot of basketball to be played

"And we are trending in the right direction. We've played well against some great teams that does a lot for our confidence, knowing how much time is left in the season."

DeRozan scored 20 or more points and shot 50 percent or better from the floor for the 12th straight game. Only the legendary Michael Jordan has matched that streak in league history.

Patty Mills added 21 points off the bench in the loss to Miami with LaMarcus Aldridge scoring 12 and Bryn Forbes and Derrick White hitting for 11 points each for the Spurs.

The Hawks (9-32) head to the Alamo City on the heels of a 123-110 win at home over Phoenix on Tuesday that snapped a four-game losing streak. Atlanta has now won three of its past 18 games.

Trae Young scored 21 of his 36 points in the fourth quarter alone, returning to the lineup after sitting out blowout loss Sunday in Brooklyn with left hamstring pain. Young also had 10 assists in Tuesday's win. He was the catalyst behind Atlanta's final-period run.

"I thought we really slowed the game down," Hawks coach Lloyd Pierce said of Atlanta's fourth-quarter performance. "Trae obviously gets hot, but to really get organized, slow the game down, make a lot of end-of-shot-clock plays, but you have to have a closer in this league. You have to be able to execute in the fourth quarter in this league and our guys did a really good job of that tonight."

Young now has 20 games with 30-plus points, which ranks third in the league behind Houston's James Harden (28) and Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo (21).

Kevin Huerter added 23 points and a career-high 15 rebounds in the win while John Collins produced 22 points and 10 rebounds, his sixth double-double of the season.

"Always good to come together and get a nice team win," Collins said, "have some of our young core pieces get going like we did tonight, see everybody flowing, get everybody in the flow of the offense."

The Hawks won the first meeting of the season with the Spurs, 108-100 in Atlanta on Nov. 5. San Antonio is 55-39 all-time against the Hawks. The Spurs' current 21-game home winning streak against Atlanta is their longest active home winning streak against any opponent.
