KEY GAME INFORMATION
DALLAS: GUARDS: MONTA ELLIS will be the Mavs' lead guard again, taking on even more ball-handling responsibilities with their black hole at point guard. In his first season in Dallas, he proved to be the perfect fit running pick-and-rolls in head coach Rick Carlisle's system . . . The Mavericks are in trouble if they have to rely on RAYMOND FELTON, a fringe rotation-caliber player even in his brief 'prime,' but he might end up the starter by default . . . JAMEER NELSON's poor defense makes him difficult to pair with Ellis, but offensively he's the best option . . . DEVIN HARRIS is a superior defender and a dangerous offensive player, but the questions are durability and how well he fits alongside Ellis . . . GAL MEKEL struggled offensively, but his defense is going to earn him minutes at both guard spots. He's a borderline rotation guy. FORWARDS: DIRK NOWITZKI came back on a discounted deal, but at age 36 he still has plenty left in the tank. He's a legit All-Star-caliber player . . . Dallas pried CHANDLER PARSONS from Houston, giving the team someone to run the floor with Ellis and shoot some corner threes in the half-court set. He figures to have a slightly smaller role than he did with the Rockets though . . . Last season in Utah, RICHARD JEFFERSON reestablished himself as a rotation player by adding a consistent three-point shot . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU gives the Mavs an energy guy who can play both forward spots . . . JAE CROWDER will have to fight to keep his spot in the rotation. He has yet to put it together offensively and he needs to add a three-point shot . . . GREG SMITH won't make a significant contribution unless his knee proves healthy. CENTERS: Durability is an underlying issue, but the Mavs were thrilled to bring TYSON CHANDLER back into the fold. He'll be much happier in Carlisle's defensive system than he was in Mike Woodson's switch-everything approach . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT will play fewer minutes behind Chandler as an extra rim protector and rebounder.
SAN ANTONIO: GUARDS: TONY PARKER may not be ageless, as he'll sit a handful of games during the regular season. But when the 32-year-old is on the court, he still gets into the lane whenever he wants . . . He can't do anything off the dribble, but DANNY GREEN is one of the league's elite spot-up shooters . . . MANU GINOBILI will need some regular-season maintenance as far as playing time goes, especially coming off a stress fracture in his leg. He's essential for the postseason . . . MARCO BELINELLI will have a significant role off the bench due to his ability to defend, shoot and do some ball-handling . . . It might be a lost regular season for NBA Finals star PATTY MILLS as he works his way back from shoulder surgery. He hopes to make his season debut in mid-January . . . CORY JOSEPH will pick up a few more minutes while Mills is out. FORWARDS: There's plenty of buzz surrounding KAWHI LEONARD after his Finals MVP performance, though it seems unlikely they'll make him the centerpiece of this offense as long as their vets are still going strong . . . Thirty-eight-year-old TIM DUNCAN is still one of the better power forwards in the league. Just like Parker and Ginobili, he'll take the occasional DNP-CD. His rebounding and shot-blocking rates continue to surge. The only real disappointment last season was that his FT shooting slid back towards his sub-70% career mark . . . JEFF AYRES is one of the new anonymous big men at the end of the San Antonio bench. He'll see a handful of starts when Gregg Popovich rests his star players . . . KYLE ANDERSON is too much of a defensive liability to see major minutes as a rookie, but his versatile skill set suggests he could be Boris Diaw's heir apparent . . . MATT BONNER will hoist some threes during the regular season. CENTERS: Popovich rotates his centers depending on the situation. TIAGO SPLITTER, the more traditional 5, will likely take the bulk of the minutes again . . . BORIS DIAW will play when the offense gets stagnant, especially when opponents go small.

*Mavericks-Spurs Preview* =========================

By JACK CASSIDY STATS Writer

Dallas (45-27) at San Antonio (45-26), 8:30 p.m. EDT

The San Antonio Spurs rebounded from a tough loss to the Dallas Mavericks with perhaps their most dominant performance of the season.

Now welcoming their divisional foes to San Antonio, the Spurs will look to replicate that outstanding effort Friday night in a matchup of teams vying for sixth place in the Western Conference.

San Antonio (45-26) was unable to slow Monta Ellis in a 101-94 loss to the Mavericks (45-27) on Tuesday, as the veteran guard matched a season high with 38 points on 16-of-27 shooting.

"Too much Monta tonight, don't you think?" Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said following the victory. "The fact that we got in transition got him some easy buckets early and got him rolling."

The Spurs also failed to defend backcourt scoring in their previous two losses, allowing Cleveland's Kyrie Irving to score 57 on March 12 before surrendering a combined 43 points to New York's Langston Galloway and Alexey Shved on March 17. They halted that trend with a shutdown performance against maybe the league's most dynamic guard, Russell Westbrook, in a 130-91 win over Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

Seven players scored in double figures for the Spurs, who held Westbrook to 16 points and four rebounds en route to their season-best 39-point margin of victory.

"I'm still mad from last night," Tony Parker said on Wednesday, referencing his team's loss in Dallas. "Then we come in tonight and we play great, so this is going to be the challenge this year, to try and find some consistency. If we want to do anything, we're going to have to play good on the road and put games together, just play for five, 10 games in a row."

Parker scored a team-high 21 points, while Boris Diaw had 19 off the bench to tie his second-best output of the season.

"In general, we played the way we need to play to win a basketball game," coach Gregg Popovich said. "That consistency is what we're looking for, and we have not gained that yet."

Popovich's team is one-half game ahead of Dallas in the battle for sixth place in the conference, and a victory Friday would even the season series at two apiece.

Steady play has also been an issue for the Mavericks, who have yet to string together more than three wins since Jan. 7. Their victory over San Antonio snapped a two-game skid, but they'll be forced back onto the road Friday where they have dropped five of six, beating only the lifeless Los Angeles Lakers in that span.

Dallas' defense has not faltered on the road, allowing 95.5 points in its last two games. Offensively, however, the Mavericks have been far from matching their 106.4 home scoring average, managing only 92 points in Sunday's loss to Phoenix and fewer than 90 points in four consecutive road defeats from Feb. 19-March 6.

Dirk Nowitzki was pleased with his team's effort on Tuesday, but knows that a trip to the AT&T Center promises a different challenge.

"We've got to play harder," Nowitzki said of the Spurs. "If your rotations aren't crisp, if you aren't up on their shooters, then they have you every single way ... Especially at home, they're really, really good. We have to be ready for a battle."

The Mavericks' 101-100 loss in San Antonio on Oct. 28 was their eighth straight there in the regular season since a 103-94 victory on Nov. 26, 2010.
