|
| | | BROOKLYN: GUARDS: Even after Paul Pierce came to Brooklyn, JOE JOHNSON remained the clear-cut No. 1 option in Brooklyn. Their offense figures to feature Johnson backing down defenders frequently again this year . . . DERON WILLIAMS seems to be deteriorating rapidly, struggling to stay healthy and losing confidence . . . JARRETT JACK figures to take Shaun Livingston's old role, playing alongside Williams often to take ball-handling duties off his plate . . . ALAN ANDERSON will see time at both wing spots as a defensive specialist who shoots some corner threes . . . SERGEY KARASEV has some long-term upside, but will do little this year . . . MARQUIS TEAGUE figures to have the edge on MARKEL BROWN for the No. 3 PG job. FORWARDS: With Paul Pierce gone, MIRZA TELETOVIC has a chance to take on a bigger role. He held his own defensively last year and provides another deep threat to space the floor . . . There's no telling what, if anything, they'll get out of ANDREI KIRILENKO this season. He seems to be at a point in his career when he's just not going to be able to stay healthy . . . BOJAN BOGDANOVIC should give Brooklyn some additional offensive firepower off the bench. He'll likely be a regular in the rotation by midseason . . . KEVIN GARNETT figures to play a bit more at the 4 alongside Brook Lopez, but there's pretty much no gas left in the tank for this 38-year-old player . . . Second-round pick CORY JEFFERSON is likely ticketed for the D-League. CENTERS: The Nets desperately need a healthy BROOK LOPEZ if they're going to win the Atlantic Division, but they'll have to monitor his minutes closely after another season lost to injury . . . With Lopez healthy, MASON PLUMLEE will resume his natural role as an energy guy off the bench. | | SAN ANTONIO: GUARDS: TONY PARKER may not be ageless, as he'll sit a handful of games during the regular season. But when the 32-year-old is on the court, he still gets into the lane whenever he wants . . . He can't do anything off the dribble, but DANNY GREEN is one of the league's elite spot-up shooters . . . MANU GINOBILI will need some regular-season maintenance as far as playing time goes, especially coming off a stress fracture in his leg. He's essential for the postseason . . . MARCO BELINELLI will have a significant role off the bench due to his ability to defend, shoot and do some ball-handling . . . It might be a lost regular season for NBA Finals star PATTY MILLS as he works his way back from shoulder surgery. He hopes to make his season debut in mid-January . . . CORY JOSEPH will pick up a few more minutes while Mills is out. FORWARDS: There's plenty of buzz surrounding KAWHI LEONARD after his Finals MVP performance, though it seems unlikely they'll make him the centerpiece of this offense as long as their vets are still going strong . . . Thirty-eight-year-old TIM DUNCAN is still one of the better power forwards in the league. Just like Parker and Ginobili, he'll take the occasional DNP-CD. His rebounding and shot-blocking rates continue to surge. The only real disappointment last season was that his FT shooting slid back towards his sub-70% career mark . . . JEFF AYRES is one of the new anonymous big men at the end of the San Antonio bench. He'll see a handful of starts when Gregg Popovich rests his star players . . . KYLE ANDERSON is too much of a defensive liability to see major minutes as a rookie, but his versatile skill set suggests he could be Boris Diaw's heir apparent . . . MATT BONNER will hoist some threes during the regular season. CENTERS: Popovich rotates his centers depending on the situation. TIAGO SPLITTER, the more traditional 5, will likely take the bulk of the minutes again . . . BORIS DIAW will play when the offense gets stagnant, especially when opponents go small. |

*Nets-Spurs Preview* ====================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Brooklyn (4-7) at San Antonio (7-4), 8:30 p.m. EDT
The Brooklyn Nets took advantage of a matchup with a short-handed team to end a lengthy skid, but they will likely have a much tougher challenge attempting to string together back-to-back wins.
The Nets will visit the surging San Antonio Spurs, who seek a season-high fourth consecutive victory Saturday night by extending their recent dominance in the series.
Brooklyn (5-7) used Jarrett Jack's season high-tying 23 points off the bench Friday to hold on for a 94-92 win over an Oklahoma City team that's struggling without superstars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. Brook Lopez recorded his first double-double of the campaign (16 points, 10 rebounds) to end a five-game skid and a three-game road losing streak.
"We came in with the mindset we were going to win, and even when we were behind, we stuck together and pushed through," Lopez said. "I think there was just a lot of effort."
The Spurs easily handled a depleted Minnesota squad 121-92 on Friday, and Tony Parker also tied his season high with 28 points in his team's sixth win in seven games. The Spurs point guard made 12 of 18 shots and went 3-for-3 from 3-point range, where he's shooting 68.4 percent (13 of 19) this season.
Only one of the Spurs' starters played more than 27 minutes, allowing the team some needed rest before its sixth game in nine nights.
"With our team we have a lot of veterans that need rest for the back-to-back"' Parker said. "So our mindset was to be focused from the get-go and make sure we can rest the guys in the second half."
San Antonio (8-4) will try to keep rolling with its 12th straight regular-season home win over Brooklyn and 21st in the last 23 overall between the teams, but it had a six-game win streak in the series snapped Feb. 6 with a 103-89 road defeat. The Spurs have won 39 of 44 home matchups, including two in three games in the 2003 NBA finals, since both franchises came over from the ABA in 1976.
The Spurs took a 113-92 victory in Brooklyn's last visit on Dec. 31, and they have won their past two by a combined 52 points.
Parker totaled 38 points in those victories and is averaging 22.3 while shooting 61.0 percent (25 of 41) in his last three overall meetings.
The Spurs might not have much depth at point guard beyond Parker with Cory Joseph not playing in the second half Friday because of an apparent ankle injury. Coach Gregg Popovich said Joseph was doubtful for Saturday, and San Antonio is already missing Patty Mills, who had offseason shoulder injury.
Tiago Splitter (calf) and Matt Bonner (illness) also missed Friday's game.
Nets reserve Alan Anderson has averaged 15.7 points on 50.0 percent shooting in his last three games against San Antonio and scored 19 of his team-best 22 in the second half of the victory in February. He's averaged 8.3 points against all other opponents in the past two-plus seasons and is averaging a career-low 4.3 in 12 games in 2014-15.
