| |  | INDIANA: GUARDS: GEORGE HILL is less of a creator and more of a game-manager/scorer, which fits fine in this starting five . . . LANCE STEPHENSON continues to be an enigma. His speed pushing the ball in transition is an asset, but his terrible shooting and bizarre decision-making often makes him a liability in the half court . . . C.J. WATSON has proven to be a capable second-unit point guard, but he's on his third team in three years because he's managed to give away two playoff games with monumentally bad moments . . . ORLANDO JOHNSON is unlikely to see meaningful minutes, but his role should grow slightly now that Gerald Green is gone. FORWARDS: This is PAUL GEORGE'S team. Once a do-it-all role player, he's now polished enough to create his own offense . . . As expected, DAVID WEST bounced back in his second season off a torn ACL. He's still deadly as a mid-range shooter, a savvy passer and a strong rebounder . . . LUIS SCOLA slides into Tyler Hansbrough's old role as a second-unit banger, and insurance for West and Roy Hibbert . . . DANNY GRANGER is in no-man's land. He's not better than Paul George, and probably no longer an upgrade over Lance Stephenson. His best asset may be his expiring deal . . . CHRIS COPELAND can't defend, but gives the Pacers a three-point threat . . . SOLOMON HILL doesn't figure to contribute this season. CENTERS: ROY HIBBERT proved capable of handling more minutes last season, but Indy will likely still be cautious with their asthmatic 7-foot-2 center during the regular season . . . IAN MAHINMI is back to give his six fouls and move some bodies out of the paint. | | SAN ANTONIO: GUARDS:Considering how exhausted he looked by the end of the Finals, don't be surprised if TONY PARKER gets more rest during the regular season . . . DANNY GREEN had a coming-out party this past June. A three-point specialist who can defend, the Spurs will lean on him more heavily during the first 82 . . . MANU GINOBILI looks oh-so-close to being done. His minutes will decline . . . MARCO BELINELLI adds quality depth behind Green. He'll take many of the minutes that used to go to Ginobili and Gary Neal, who left for Milwaukee . . . CORY JOSEPH enters the season as the favorite to back up Parker, but it's a fluid situation . . . NANDO DE COLO fell out of the rotation last season, but has enough talent that he should bounce back . . . PATTY MILLS is more of a cheerleader than a useful bench piece. FORWARDS: TIM DUNCAN just keeps going. The 2012-13 regular season was his best in years. The Spurs will keep his minutes in check, but he likely has another great season in him . . . KAWHI LEONARD is one of the league's elite role players, and he seems to keep getting better. He can shoot, score off the dribble and defend . . . JEFF AYRES is a skilled big man who will back up Duncan and can play alongside him for stretches. Like all of their frontcourt players besides Duncan, the player formerly known as Jeff Pendergraph, will see his playing time will fluctuate greatly depending on matchups. CENTERS: TIAGO SPLITTER continues to improve rapidly, and he'll now take the bulk of the minutes alongside Duncan. But as we saw in last year's Finals, head coach Gregg Popovich will keep him on the bench if the matchup isn't right . . . BORIS DIAW's versatility gives Pop options off the bench . . . MATT BONNER is pretty much just around to participate in the Three-Point Shootout at this point in his career. |

*Pacers-Spurs Preview* ======================

Indiana (17-2) at San Antonio (15-3), 8:30 p.m. EDT
Ever since Tim Duncan came to town, the San Antonio Spurs haven't exactly been gracious hosts to the Indiana Pacers. The team with the NBA's best record will try to reverse that trend Saturday night.
The Pacers, who have lost 11 in a row in San Antonio and gone 1-14 there since Duncan was drafted first overall in 1997, visit the Spurs in a meeting of two of the league's top teams.
Indiana (17-2) has been the best defensive squad in the NBA this season, allowing league lows in both points (87.5) and shooting percentage (39.5).
Anchored by center Roy Hibbert, who averages 3.4 blocks, the Pacers have the length and physicality to control the defensive end. Only three times this season has Indiana allowed 100 or more points - it lost two of those games - and the team is outrebounding opponents by a 4.1 margin.
On Wednesday, the Pacers limited Utah to 41.3-percent shooting while forcing 14 turnovers, which led to 20 points in a 95-86 win.
"We made those guys take tough shots and, over time, those shots start to get a little short or a little long," Pacers forward Paul George said. "Our defense played a huge part in us getting this win."
George has been the leader on the other end of the floor, averaging a team-high 24.6 points while also chipping in 5.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists. George scored a career-high 43 in Monday's 106-102 loss at Portland. That came on the heels of the small forward being named the Eastern Conference Player of the Month for November.
Both of the Pacers' losses have come on the road, but the team has played well against some of the NBA's top competition and is 2-1 on its current five-game trip.
They opened the swing with a victory over the Los Angeles Clippers and will now face two more of the West's best teams before returning home. The Pacers close the trip at Oklahoma City on Sunday.
"It's a great opportunity for our team to grow and compete against some of the better teams in the NBA," forward David West said of the next two contests.
Beating Duncan and the Spurs (15-3) won't be easy, especially at AT&T Center. Indiana's only victory there since 1997 was a 92-82 victory on Jan. 4, 2002.
San Antonio has been terrific in its building this season, going 8-1 and shooting 50.3 percent from the field.
At 37, Duncan is averaging a career-low 13.1 points while playing just 27.9 minutes per game, but he offered a vintage performance Monday against Atlanta. He hit the winning jumper in the final second and finished with 23 points and 21 rebounds in a 102-100 win over the Hawks.
Duncan became the oldest player with 20 or more points and 20 or more boards since the NBA began keeping track of rebounds during the 1985-86 season.
"I feel a lot healthier now," he said. "For a while there, I was dealing with some stuff, but now my body is feeling good and I'm starting to get my legs underneath me."
The Spurs were scheduled to play Wednesday night against the Timberwolves in Mexico City, but the game was postponed because of smokey conditions in the arena. It will be made up in Minnesota at a later date.
