KEY GAME INFORMATION
CLEVELAND: GUARDS: KYRIE IRVING is the real deal, a heady playmaker and near-elite shooter. He should emerge as the NBA's next great point guard this season . . . Rookie DION WAITERS has a chance to step right into the starting lineup. He can get to the rim and generally makes good choices withthe ball. The only thing holding him back is defense after playing college ball in Syracuse's lazy zone . . . C.J. MILES will reportedly start at either the two or three spot, but he really needs to find the range on his shot again for him to stick in the starting lineup . . . Gunning combo guard DANIEL GIBSON is looking like he'll be their sixth man . . . The Cavs are still trying to figure out their second unit. JEREMY PARGO figures to be Irving's backup, but DONALD SLOAN is a better defender and could eventually pass him for this role, which doesn't mean many minutes unless Irving gets injured again. FORWARDS: TRISTAN THOMPSON is trying to add a perimeter shot to his repertoire. Don't count on him becoming David West, but he should improve offensively to go along with his rebounding and shot-blocking . . . ALONZO GEE returns as the starting small forward, excelling on the defensive end, but without a polished enough offensive game to earn 35 minutes per night . . . OMRI CASSPI was in and out of the rotation late in the year as he battled knee issues. It's getting close to make-or-break time for him . . . JON LEUER is a solid stretch four who has a real chance at a rotation spot . . . SAMARDO SAMUELS reportedly dropped some weight in his effort to find some minutes . . . LUKE WALTON is an unofficial member of the coaching staff . . . Undrafted rookie KEVIN JONES could make some noise with his work on the offensive boards . . . LUKE HARANGODY is more of a D-League talent. CENTERS: ANDERSON VAREJAO's wrist should be 100 percent, and Sideshow Anderson should be the same relentless, double-double threat he's always been . . . Rookie TYLER ZELLER is a 7-footer with some nice offensive skills -- he can knock down a jump shot in the half court, and run the floor. He'll struggle to defend in space, but made a living drawing charges at UNC, and should be able to play 20+ minutes as a rookie.
SAN ANTONIO: GUARDS: TONY PARKER played at an MVP level last year. His eye injury is obviously not an issue, and he was constantly getting on coach Gregg Popovich to let him finish meaningless games last year. There's no reason he can't repeat last year's performance . . . MANU GINOBILI dealt with a series of nagging injuries last year, and it's clear the team will have to monitor his regular-season workload . . . GARY NEAL provides solid minutes in this rotation, mostly at the point, and is able to consistently knock down threes . . . DANNY GREEN's rotation spot is in a bit of peril. He was too much of an offensive liability in last year's Western Conference Finals . . . NANDO de COLO is a combo guard who can provide instant offense off the bench. He can shoot it and does a nice job getting to the line . . . PATTY MILLS steps in as another viable option in this loaded backcourt . . . CORY JOSEPH's roster spot is in jeopardy after a middling D-League season. FORWARDS: TIM DUNCAN will continue to save it up for the playoffs. He still has plenty left in the tank, but he'll get tons of rest in March and April and more and more often defers to Tony Parker on offense when he does play . . . There's plenty to like about KAWHI LEONARD, who proved to be useful on both ends of the court last season. He'll be asked to be a little more aggressive offensively this year and should even have a couple of sets designed for him . . . STEPHEN JACKSON was a bit of a disaster in Milwaukee before landing with the Spurs last year. He's another veteran who will be paced during the regular season. And while he's been a facilitator in the past, he's really just a catch-and-shoot guy in San Antonio . . . MATT BONNER will continue to come off the bench and hoist some threes. CENTERS: BORIS DIAW's pick-and-pop ability makes him Popovich's top choice in the center rotation . . . TIAGO SPLITTER looks to be a career second-unit guy. He works hard and can defend, but he's just too clunky on the offensive end . . . DeJUAN BLAIR can pick up some cheap baskets, but his lack of offensive skills and defensive size makes him a fringe rotation player.

*Cavaliers-Spurs Preview* =========================

By MATT BEARDMORE STATS Writer

Cleveland (22-43) at San Antonio (50-16), 8:30 p.m. EDT

The San Antonio Spurs are back in the playoffs and their run of 50-win seasons continues.

The Western Conference leaders, though, aren't without their flaws.

San Antonio goes for a seventh consecutive victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday night when these teams close out their season series.

With Dallas' Vince Carter missing a 3-pointer in the final second on Thursday, San Antonio (50-16) opened its four-game homestand with a 92-91 victory. The Spurs also clinched a postseason spot for the 16th straight season and extended their NBA-record streak with at least 50 wins to 14.

Still, the Spurs have plenty of room for improvement. They've dropped two of four, with those defeats to Portland and Minnesota coming by a total of 54 points.

"We continued to play in mud like we have been for the last two weeks," said coach Gregg Popovich, whose team is averaging 87.5 points and shooting 39.8 percent in its last two contests. "I'm not sure what to attribute it to, but it's a fact."

Missing Tony Parker for the last six games probably has something to do with it. The All-Star point guard, who is having one of his best seasons with 21.0 points per game and 7.6 assists, is supposed to miss another two weeks with a Grade 2 left ankle sprain.

"We need to get the ball moving again, and people moving again, try to push it a little bit more," Manu Ginobili said after Friday's practice. "Of course without Tony it's a little harder, because this season we got used to relying on him a lot, but now he's not here, he's going to miss a few more games and we've got to keep winning."

The Spurs, 27-4 at home, haven't lost to Cleveland (22-43) since March 8, 2010, after a 3-pointer by Kawhi Leonard with 2.9 seconds left was the difference in a 96-95 victory on Feb. 13.

San Antonio was playing with Parker, Ginobili and Tim Duncan for the first time in exactly a month due to injuries to its Big Three.

Duncan, who missed Tuesday's 25-point loss at the Timberwolves with a sore knee, said he's feeling better after scoring 28 points and coming one rebound shy of his 22nd 20-20 game on Thursday.

"The pain (in the knee) is gone and I'm starting to feel like I can actually play the game," Duncan said.

While Popovich can lean on Duncan, Ginobili, Leonard and many others to pick up the slack with Parker out, Cavs coach Byron Scott doesn't have that same luxury with All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving possibly done for the season with a sprained left shoulder.

With their best scorer and distributor gone, the Cavs have to limit mistakes. They committed six of their 18 turnovers in the fourth quarter of Friday's 96-86 loss at Dallas and were outscored 29-18 during that 12-minute stretch.

"I thought we got a little upset at ourselves at the way we were defending," Scott said. "We kind of let that affect us on the other end."

Rookie guard Dion Waiters, though, finished with 21 points to reach 20 in a season high-tying three straight games. With Irving held to a season-low six points, the No. 4 overall pick scored a team-best 20 in last month's loss to San Antonio.

The Spurs, 10-1 at home against East opponents, have won three in a row with the Cavs in town by an average of 15.0 points.
