KEY GAME INFORMATION
PHOENIX: GUARDS: With Steve Nash gone, GORAN DRAGIC takes over at the point. He was a monster as a starter in Houston late last year, and he's familiar with Phoenix's system from his time there as Nash's backup . . . SHANNON BROWN is one of the league's better sixth men and could end up seeing close to starter minutes this year. Once just a raw athlete, he's made major strides as a shooter and ball-handler . . . KENDALL MARSHALL was a bit of a product of an absurdly talented supporting cast in college at UNC. He's got work to do to become an NBA-caliber starter, but he'll be capable enough as a backup point guard as a rookie . . . SEBASTIAN TELFAIR still can't hit an open jump shot, but will factor into the backcourt rotation. FORWARDS: LUIS SCOLA steps in as the starting four. While he's in his 30's and an underwhelming athlete, he's crafty and relentless . . . JARED DUDLEY will continue to be their main catch-and-shoot threat on the wing. It might take a while to develop an on-court chemistry with Dragic . . . MICHAEL BEASLEY has a chance to grab a starting spot. He rarely has his head on straight, but he can score . . . CHANNING FRYE, the sharp-shooting 7-footer, will likely miss the 2012-13 season due to an enlarged heart, but this condition is expected to completely heal . . . WESLEY JOHNSON gets a fresh start. He needs to start knocking down shots to land a rotation spot . . . MARKIEFF MORRIS showed flashes as a rookie, but has to make better decisions on the offensive end. He'll be a key on the second unit . . . Well-traveled P.J. TUCKER earned himself a roster spot with an impressive Summer League. CENTERS: MARCIN GORTAT had a great year-and-a-half alongside Steve Nash, and he'll have to prove he can create in the low post a little more. But he's a skilled big man who should pair nicely with Luis Scola as a scorer and passer in the post . . . Injury-riddled JERMAINE O'NEAL is still a strong low-post defender and shot-blocker.
SAN ANTONIO: GUARDS: TONY PARKER played at an MVP level last year. His eye injury is obviously not an issue, and he was constantly getting on coach Gregg Popovich to let him finish meaningless games last year. There's no reason he can't repeat last year's performance . . . MANU GINOBILI dealt with a series of nagging injuries last year, and it's clear the team will have to monitor his regular-season workload . . . GARY NEAL provides solid minutes in this rotation, mostly at the point, and is able to consistently knock down threes . . . DANNY GREEN's rotation spot is in a bit of peril. He was too much of an offensive liability in last year's Western Conference Finals . . . NANDO de COLO is a combo guard who can provide instant offense off the bench. He can shoot it and does a nice job getting to the line . . . PATTY MILLS steps in as another viable option in this loaded backcourt . . . CORY JOSEPH's roster spot is in jeopardy after a middling D-League season. FORWARDS: TIM DUNCAN will continue to save it up for the playoffs. He still has plenty left in the tank, but he'll get tons of rest in March and April and more and more often defers to Tony Parker on offense when he does play . . . There's plenty to like about KAWHI LEONARD, who proved to be useful on both ends of the court last season. He'll be asked to be a little more aggressive offensively this year and should even have a couple of sets designed for him . . . STEPHEN JACKSON was a bit of a disaster in Milwaukee before landing with the Spurs last year. He's another veteran who will be paced during the regular season. And while he's been a facilitator in the past, he's really just a catch-and-shoot guy in San Antonio . . . MATT BONNER will continue to come off the bench and hoist some threes. CENTERS: BORIS DIAW's pick-and-pop ability makes him Popovich's top choice in the center rotation . . . TIAGO SPLITTER looks to be a career second-unit guy. He works hard and can defend, but he's just too clunky on the offensive end . . . DeJUAN BLAIR can pick up some cheap baskets, but his lack of offensive skills and defensive size makes him a fringe rotation player.

*Suns-Spurs Preview* ====================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer

Phoenix (19-39) at San Antonio (45-13), 8:30 p.m. EDT

The San Antonio Spurs own the NBA's best record and are aiming for their third consecutive top seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

Playing 13 of their next 15 games at home with many against sub-.500 competition - including Wednesday night's contest with the Phoenix Suns - may help them move closer to accomplishing that goal.

San Antonio (45-13) is a league-best 22-2 at home and is coming off a 7-2 road trip after beating the Suns 97-87 on Sunday. It has won 18 straight at the AT&T Center, with the last defeat coming Nov. 19 in a 92-87 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Coach Gregg Popovich was happy the trip ended on a positive note knowing his team was looking forward to heading home.

"It was a great trip," Popovich said. "I thought the guys kept good focus on the road here in the last game. You know they all want to go home and I thought they did a fine job."

With Tony Parker out due to a sore right triceps, Kawhi Leonard and Patrick Mills each scored a team-high 16 points - role-player contributions Popovich has come to expect.

"We've had to do it quite a bit this year as far as having one, two or three guys out," Popovich said. "So the bench has gotten a good look and I think they have gained some good confidence through all that."

Parker, making his case for MVP with his stellar play, hopes to return Wednesday. He's averaging 27.7 points over his last seven games.

"As long as there aren't any setbacks or it doesn't feel right - Pop doesn't want me to take any risks," said Parker, who hit 13 of 17 from the field and scored 31 points in the Spurs' 108-99 home win over the Suns on Jan. 26. "It feels great to be home. (We will) try and not take it for granted and make sure we play well."

Seven of the Spurs' next nine game are against sub.-500 teams, including four on this six-game homestand. After a road date with Minnesota on March 12, they'll return home to face Dallas and Cleveland.

They've beaten the Suns six straight times and own a seven-game home winning streak against Phoenix (19-39), which had lost seven of eight before Tuesday's 84-83 overtime win over Minnesota.

Marcin Gortat scored 14 points, including the tying bucket in regulation and a clutch basket in OT.

The Suns led by as many as 18 points, though, and interim coach Lindsey Hunter was disappointed they couldn't close out the win earlier.

"We made it a little tougher on ourselves, but we will take it," Hunter said. "We still just for some reason do not finish quarters the way we are supposed to."

Still, Phoenix is tied with Sacramento for the worst record in the West, and gladly will take any victory at this point.

"It feels great," said Goran Dragic, who had 10 points and seven assists.

Gortat scored 21 points while Dragic added 10 and 11 assists in Sunday's loss to the Spurs, but the Suns committed 20 turnovers. They are averaging just 87.6 points over their last seven, and Hunter knows his team can't afford giving the ball away to a San Antonio team scoring 104.3 points per contest.

"You play so hard and then you make one mistake against those guys and they make you pay," Hunter said after the last meeting. "That's what they do."

Phoenix is 2-12 on the end of back-to-backs this season.
