KEY GAME INFORMATION
DALLAS: Tell the world Deron Williams is coming home. The veteran point guard has lost a step (to put it kindly), but he'll be surrounded by a much better roster than he had in Brooklyn, opening things up a bit more . . . When healthy Wesley Matthews is one of the league's top 3-and-D wings. Dallas paid him despite his ruptured achilles, though he's likely going to be at least limited early in the year . . . If his toe is healthy again, Devin Harris should be able to effectively spell Williams and Matthews . . . J.J. Barea was solid in his return to Dallas last year and should head up the second unit . . . John Jenkins could never stay healthy in Atlanta, but he is an outstanding shooter and possible rotation piece when healthy . . . Raymond Felton plays in the NBA, therefore, so can you!Health is a question mark, but the Mavs will lean on Chandler Parsons as much as they can. He should take on more of a point forward role and be the focal point of the offense once he's fully reocovered from knee surgery in mid-November . . . Ideally, the Mavs would find plenty of rest for Dirk Nowitzki during the regular season. But they'll be battling for a playoff spot, and they'll need vintage Nowitzki . . . Rookie Justin Anderson might be the top wing off the bench. He's a defense first role player who looks NBA-ready . . . Charlie Villanueva could see a few additional minutes and chuck some threes . . . The Mavs are hoping to bring Dwight Powell along as a stretch 4; there are minutes available in the frontcourt . . . Jeremy Evans presumably gives them a candidate for the 2016 Slam Dunk competition. Zaza Pachulia was the consolation prize after the DeAndre Jordan debacle. He's not the physical presence that Jordan is, but he's an active 7-footer who is a starting-caliber performer on both ends of the floor . . . JaVale McGee is a reclamation project for the team. Once he returns from a leg injury in November, McGee could end up providing the type of presence that they wanted in Jordan if he stays healthy and able to learn Rick Carlisle's system.
SACRAMENTO: Rajon Rondo gets new life in Sacto. He was a disaster in Dallas, where his inability to make a jumpshot led to sagging defenses clogging the paint and stifling the Mavs. There's a real chance his skill set no longer fits in today's NBA . . . Ben McLemore's three-point shooting will be key for this team, as opponents will already have an extra defender in the paint because of Rondo. McLemore's shooting gives them a chance to open up room for DeMarcus Cousins to operate . . . The arrival of Rondo sends Darren Collison back to the bench. Though he'll likely play some 2 alongside Rondo as well . . . Marco Belinelli is a heady passer who brings more much-needed shooting to the lineup . . . After an unimpressive first stint in the NBA, James Anderson returns to the league after a one-year run in Lithuania. He has never quite become a complete player, but Rudy Gay should continue to thrive working off of DeMarcus Cousins. He'll have his share of wide-open threes and driving lanes. Gay will also see extended minutes as a stretch 4 . . . Omri Casspi had a solid bounbeback season in his return to Sacramento. He brings some defensive versatility off the bench, and shot the ball much better last season . . . Veteran wing Caron Butler is part of the Kings' attempt to surround Cousins with shooters. At this point in his career, he brings little more than the ability to spot up in the corner . . . Quincy Acy returns to Sacramento as an athletic big with little offensive upside. He's essentially a 12th man. DeMarcus Cousins lived up to his immense potential for most of last season, but he and Karl are a volatile mix . . . Uniquely athletic, Willie Cauley-Stein will take some of the defensive burden off Cousins as a possible starting 4. He's a non-factor offensively . . . Kosta Koufos is a nice addition as a quality second-unit center.
PREVIEW
Mavericks-Kings Preview

Rajon Rondo's short-lived stint with the Dallas Mavericks ended in ignominious fashion.

The NBA assists leader will face the Mavericks for the first time since leaving the club Monday night at home for the Sacramento Kings, who are hoping DeMarcus Cousins returns to the lineup.

Rondo was traded from Boston to Dallas on Dec. 28 in a move designed to help the Mavericks make a playoff push. It turned out to be a disaster, with the point guard never fitting into Rick Carlisle's system and serving a one-game suspension for a shouting match with the coach.

The Mavericks lost in the first round of the playoffs in five games to Houston. Rondo did not play in the final three of those due to a back injury the team said he did not disclose until he re-aggravated it in a loss in Game 2.

Rondo averaged 6.5 assists in 46 games with Dallas compared to 10.8 in his first 22 contests with the Celtics last season.

He's back to his usual level of production with a league-best 11.0 assists per game and NBA-high four triple-doubles with the Kings, whom he joined as a free agent in the offseason.

Sacramento (6-12) has dropped six straight and 21 of 23 meetings with Dallas.

Cousins could return from a three-game absence due to a lower back strain. He averages team highs of 27.9 points and 11.2 rebounds, and Sacramento is 1-7 in games he's missed.

"He's definitely an integral part to what we do," center Kosta Koufos said. "He's an All-Star, once he comes back we'll be clicking on all cylinders."

Dallas (10-7) signed Deron Williams in the offseason to fill its point guard vacancy. Williams scored a season-high 22 points Saturday to help the Mavericks end a three-game slide with a 92-81 home win over Denver.

After yielding 52 points in the first half, the Mavs outscored the Nuggets 25-5 in the third quarter.

''We finally played with a little more energy,'' Dirk Nowitzki said. ''Overall, I like how we worked for each other.''

The Mavs' two-game road trip concludes against Portland on Tuesday. They went 0-3 on the trip that preceded Saturday's contest.

"We've got an unselfish crew, guys that wanna play with each other and veterans that have been around and have been in all sorts of situations and just want to make it work, want to play off each other and want to have some fun," Nowitzki said. "It's been a decent start, (though) the last three games were a little rough."

The Kings were routed 120-101 on the road by Golden State on Saturday. Rudy Gay scored 20 points as he bounced back from scoring two on 1-of-13 shooting in Friday's 101-91 home defeat to Minnesota.

"We'll get back on the right track but right now, we've got to hopefully get healthy with Cous," coach George Karl said. "Once he gets in the lineup, I think we'll get our confidence in a good direction."
