| |  | NEW ORLEANS: GUARDS: This offense will belong to ERIC GORDON. He'll get over the fact that the Hornets matched his offer from Phoenix, and as long as his surgically-repaired knee holds up, he's one of the most complete young scorers in the NBA . . . The Hornets reached for AUSTIN RIVERS with the 10th pick because Monty Williams wants to coach him and thinks he can be an NBA point guard. Rivers has the handle, but his athleticism is ordinary and, more importantly, he has never shown a PG mentality at any level . . . GREIVIS VASQUEZ is the closest thing to a true point guard on this roster. He'll see solid minutes assuming Rivers' adjustment is a tough one . . . Well-rounded ROGER MASON JR. will also provide point guard depth . . . XAVIER HENRY hasn't lived up to his reputation as a shooter, but the Hornets can be patient with him . . . Rookie BRIAN ROBERTS has had a strong enough preseason to likely earn a roster spot. FORWARDS: ANTHONY DAVIS should step right in as a starter. His offensive game is further along than he gets credit for, and on the defensive end he's an absolute force from the basket out to the perimeter . . . He'll probably miss having Dwight Howard drawing in defenses, but RYAN ANDERSON has always been a very good three-point shooter. He and Davis are unique enough talents to share the court even if they're both power forwards . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU made some strides on the defensive end late last season, which is what will get him minutes under Williams. He's underwhelming on the offensive end . . . If HAKIM WARRICK couldn't succeed as Steve Nash's pick-and-roll partner, it seems unlikely he'll ever help in New Orleans . . . Rookie DARIUS MILLER is looking to establish some kind of role with the team . . . LANCE THOMAS is doubtful to earn a salary to pay off his jewelry debts. CENTERS: ROBIN LOPEZ has always had the ability to protect the rim and does a decent job in space. Look for him to end up grabbing the bulk of minutes in the middle . . . JASON SMITH gives the Hornets a more offensive-minded option off the bench. | | SACRAMENTO: GUARDS: MARCUS THORNTON is the only one guaranteed a consistent role on the perimeter . . . ISAIAH THOMAS was the story of the second half for the Kings. He can fill up the box score, but at 5-foot-9 (at best) he's too much of a defensive liability and not a point guard . . . AARON BROOKS is the most talented guard on this team. He's had attitude problems in the past, but he could, and should, lead this team . . . Now that he remained in Sacto, TYREKE EVANS will be playing off the ball at the three against his wishes . . . The Kings will keep on trying to unload JOHN SALMONS, who's not a useful NBA player . . . JIMMER FREDETTE should have a role off the bench, but his ball-handling is not where it has to be for an NBA point guard . . . FRANCISCO GARCIA's chance seems to have passed him by. FORWARDS: THOMAS ROBINSON should emerge as a starter early in his rookie year. He has his flaws on both ends of the floor, but he brings energy and doesn't need a lot of touches to get his points . . . Even if Robinson knocks him to the bench, JASON THOMPSON should play the five at times and see close to starter's minutes . . . JAMES JOHNSON should also play big minutes soon considering his ability to make positive contributions without a lot of touches . . . CHUCK HAYES should continue to play second-unit minutes as a glue guy . . . TRAVIS OUTLAW has regressed to the point that he's lucky to have a roster spot . . . TYLER HONEYCUTT has an intriguing skill set as a defensive-minded point forward, but he's likely ticketed for the D-League again. CENTERS: DeMARCUS COUSINS came on strong late last season. There's no doubt he has All-Star potential, but between his awful shot selection and occasional attitude problems, he just hasn't lived up to his potential. After Team USA passed on him this summer because of reported maturity problems, he might still not get it. |

*Hornets-Kings Preview* =======================

The New Orleans Hornets and Sacramento Kings continue to slide toward the end of disappointing seasons.
The Hornets, however, can still accomplish something they haven't done in 16 years - sweep the season series from the Kings.
New Orleans will look to do that Wednesday night when the teams meet in Sacramento.
After claiming victories in two earlier meetings this year in New Orleans, the Hornets (27-51) have a chance to sweep the Kings for the first time since 1996-97, when they were still located in Charlotte. But they'll have to shake off a particularly rough road stretch in which they've lost 9 of 10 - the only win a 95-92 victory at lowly Phoenix on Sunday.
The struggles continued Tuesday with a 104-96 loss to the Lakers at Staples Center. New Orleans led 82-80 with 7:06 to play, but fell prey to Kobe Bryant's 23-point fourth quarter.
"He had a lot of tough shots to get him going," said Eric Gordon, who scored 22 to lead the Hornets. "Whenever you hit a few in a row it's almost hard to stop. He had a lot of tough shots and when he gets to the free throw line, it's a whole different ballgame."
Though the Hornets sit one-half game back of Sacramento for 14th in the Western Conference, their young nucleus continues to impress.
Anthony Davis had 18 points and 14 rebounds against the Lakers and is averaging 16.2 points on 53.7 percent shooting with 9.8 rebounds over his last 18 games. Greivis Vasquez also looks like one of the league's top young point guards, recording 11 points and 11 assists Tuesday. It was his 30th game this season with at least 10 assists - a feat he accomplished just six times in 2011-12.
The Kings (27-50) have dropped the first four games on their five-game homestand, including an 89-87 loss to Memphis on Sunday. They did see DeMarcus Cousins bounce back with a strong performance, posting 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting to go along with nine rebounds. Cousins didn't start and played less than 10 minutes in the team's loss to Dallas two nights earlier - the first time he came off the bench since a Jan. 4, 2012, at Denver.
No reason was given by coach Keith Smart for Cousins' benching versus the Mavericks, but it seemed to ignite Cousins against the Grizzlies as he started with 11 points and four rebounds in the first quarter alone.
Cousins, averaging 20.7 points and 11.5 rebounds over his last six against the Hornets, will likely need much more help from his teammates to put the brakes on the four-game slide Tuesday. The other four starters - John Salmons, Jason Thompson, Isaiah Thomas and Tyreke Evans - combined to go 8 for 29 (27.6 percent) from the floor against Dallas.
The offensive ineptitude essentially neutralized what was rare good defensive performance from Sacramento. The Kings had allowed an average of 108.8 points over their previous four games.
"I thought our defense did a good enough job to give us a chance in this game," Smart said. "A lot of guys didn't shoot well. That kind of negated us. We need to have a big scoring night against this team."
Patrick Patterson (8.3 ppg, 5.1 rpg) is listed as day-to-day after he missed Sunday's game with a sore lower back.
The Kings have won the teams' last three meetings in Sacramento.
