| |  | MEMPHIS: GUARDS: The Grizzlies will scale back MIKE CONLEY's minutes a bit. He's a quality starting point guard, but seemed to lose some pep as last season wore on . . . TONY ALLEN figures to see more playing time now that O.J. Mayo is gone. He's an outstanding defender who will be the fifth option on offense . . . JERRYD BAYLESS figures to become the new sixth man and Allen platoon partner. He'll also spell Conley at the point, leading to solid minutes for the combo guard . . . Second-year man JOSH SELBY has a chance for a rotation spot after starring in the Summer League. He has big offensive upside . . . WAYNE ELLINGTON seems like an emergency plan for the second unit . . . This is likely a redshirt year for talented, but erratic, rookie TONY WROTEN. FORWARDS: RUDY GAY is going to lead the Grizzlies in touches and shots. He's not shy about looking for iso situations . . . ZACH RANDOLPH had trouble getting back into the flow after his knee injury. It's always been a fragile balance with Z-Bo, and he could be an odd man out going forward . . . MARREESE SPEIGHTS should be the offensive focal point of the bench unit as their sixth man . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER is a versatile defensive piece who will see solid minutes off the bench. He's a non-factor offensively, though . . . DARRELL ARTHUR suffered a non-displaced fractured in his leg in late September, and will not likely be ready when the season begins. A rising young big, his role will depend on when his athleticism comes back. CENTERS: The Grizzlies are at their best when MARC GASOL is getting touches and shots on the offensive end. Whether or not Gay and Randolph are willing to share is a concern, but Gasol has to be aggressive when the ball is in his hands . . . HAMED HADDADI will continue to play limited minutes off the bench. | | SACRAMENTO: GUARDS: MARCUS THORNTON is the only one guaranteed a consistent role on the perimeter . . . ISAIAH THOMAS was the story of the second half for the Kings. He can fill up the box score, but at 5-foot-9 (at best) he's too much of a defensive liability and not a point guard . . . AARON BROOKS is the most talented guard on this team. He's had attitude problems in the past, but he could, and should, lead this team . . . Now that he remained in Sacto, TYREKE EVANS will be playing off the ball at the three against his wishes . . . The Kings will keep on trying to unload JOHN SALMONS, who's not a useful NBA player . . . JIMMER FREDETTE should have a role off the bench, but his ball-handling is not where it has to be for an NBA point guard . . . FRANCISCO GARCIA's chance seems to have passed him by. FORWARDS: THOMAS ROBINSON should emerge as a starter early in his rookie year. He has his flaws on both ends of the floor, but he brings energy and doesn't need a lot of touches to get his points . . . Even if Robinson knocks him to the bench, JASON THOMPSON should play the five at times and see close to starter's minutes . . . JAMES JOHNSON should also play big minutes soon considering his ability to make positive contributions without a lot of touches . . . CHUCK HAYES should continue to play second-unit minutes as a glue guy . . . TRAVIS OUTLAW has regressed to the point that he's lucky to have a roster spot . . . TYLER HONEYCUTT has an intriguing skill set as a defensive-minded point forward, but he's likely ticketed for the D-League again. CENTERS: DeMARCUS COUSINS came on strong late last season. There's no doubt he has All-Star potential, but between his awful shot selection and occasional attitude problems, he just hasn't lived up to his potential. After Team USA passed on him this summer because of reported maturity problems, he might still not get it. |

Memphis (51-25) at Sacramento (27-49), 6:00 p.m. EDT
With six games remaining, the Memphis Grizzlies can't afford to fall further behind in the fight for home-court advantage in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.
They should have a good chance to get back on track against the sinking Sacramento Kings.
The Grizzlies look to win for the fifth time in six games and stay within striking distance of a top-four seed Sunday night when the visit the Kings, losers of four straight at home.
Memphis (51-25) had won four in a row before falling 86-84 to the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday. Mike Conley scored a team-best 21 points, but missed a potential go-ahead jumper with five seconds left and a layup before the buzzer that would have tied it.
"We executed like we were supposed to, and tried to get a shot up," Conley said of the final sequence. "We tried to get some penetration and see what we can make out of it, but it just didn't work out."
The fifth-place Grizzlies are right behind Denver for the third seed in the West, while the Clippers, the Pacific Division leaders, own the fourth seed.
Memphis, looking for its third win in four road games, can sweep the season series with Sacramento for the first time in the franchise's 17-year history.
The Grizzlies have defeated the Kings (27-49) three times by an average of 18.3 points and won the only meeting at Sacramento 113-81 on Jan. 7.
Conley has averaged 18.8 points in his last five games in this series. The point guard has scored 21.0 per game and made 13 for 28 from 3-point range in his past seven overall.
Center Marc Gasol has totaled 42 points and 22 rebounds in his last two games against the Kings.
Memphis hopes to bounce back offensively after going 3 of 14 from 3-point range and getting held scoreless for the final 2 1/2 minutes Friday.
While they rank near the bottom of the league at 93.7 points per game, the Grizzlies have averaged 109.8 and 50.7 percent shooting in their last eight versus Sacramento.
Continuing that trend might not be too difficult against a Kings team that has allowed 112.3 points during its home skid.
Sacramento gave up 41 points in the second quarter and 99 over the final three periods in dropping its third straight Friday, 117-108 to Dallas.
DeMarcus Cousins, Sacramento's leading scorer and rebounder, did not start for the first time this season. He entered in the second quarter and finished with six points in nine minutes.
"There's no details and there's nothing behind it," coach Keith Smart said. "I went with the guys that I thought at that particular time would give us what I was looking for with that team."
While it's uncertain whether he'll return to the starting lineup Sunday, Cousins has totaled 45 points and 19 rebounds in his last two against the Grizzlies.
Teammate Tyreke Evans has stepped up lately, averaging 23.0 points and 54.2 percent shooting in his last three games. He scored 20 in the latest matchup in the series Feb. 12, a 108-101 loss.
The Kings, however, haven't gotten enough big offensive efforts against the Grizzlies this season, as they've managed 83.7 points and 39.3 percent shooting. Memphis ranks near the top of the NBA at 89.8 points allowed per game.
The Grizzlies have won 10 of the last 12 meetings.
