|
| | | ATLANTA: GUARDS: GM Danny Ferry has really talked up JEFF TEAGUE, who will be more of a traditional point guard with Joe Johnson gone . . . DEVIN HARRIS is going to play plenty of minutes, both alongside Teague and off the bench . . . LOU WILLIAMS is a sixth man. He lacks the mentality to run the point and the size to guard opposing twos. His role will be similar to what it was in Philly . . . KYLE KORVER and ANTHONY MORROW are pure shooters who do little else. They can play the three in a pinch, and the hot hand will get the minutes . . . Coach Larry Drew could call on DeSHAWN STEVENSON for the occasional defense-heavy lineup. More likely, he'll rack up the DNP-CDs . . . JOHN JENKINS might be the best shooter in the rookie class, but he'll be buried on the depth chart. FORWARDS: JOSH SMITH rescinded his trade demand, perhaps because he'll now be the focal point of the offense. He was more aggressive on both ends of the floor last year. As long as he resists the urge to float on the perimeter, he should emerge as an All-Star . . . Considering the makeup of this roster, Atlanta will utilize a lot of three-guard lineups. Korver and Morrow can stretch a defense from that third guard/small forward spot, with Stevenson stepping in as an agitator . . . After scoring double-figures six times in April, IVAN JOHNSON was re-signed to once again provide some muscle inside . . . Rookie MIKE SCOTT is polished after five years at Virginia, but doesn't have the athleticism to be an impact player . . . ANTHONY TOLLIVER is a defensive specialist with very little offense to contribute. CENTERS: AL HORFORD will get his wish to play more power forward this season, though he'll remain their primary option at center. He's healthy again and is one of the most consistent bigs in the NBA . . . ZAZA PACHULIA filled in admirably for Horford last year. But it's back to bench duty for the bruising big . . . JOHAN PETRO is French for "12th man." | | SACRAMENTO: GUARDS: MARCUS THORNTON is the only one guaranteed a consistent role on the perimeter . . . ISAIAH THOMAS was the story of the second half for the Kings. He can fill up the box score, but at 5-foot-9 (at best) he's too much of a defensive liability and not a point guard . . . AARON BROOKS is the most talented guard on this team. He's had attitude problems in the past, but he could, and should, lead this team . . . Now that he remained in Sacto, TYREKE EVANS will be playing off the ball at the three against his wishes . . . The Kings will keep on trying to unload JOHN SALMONS, who's not a useful NBA player . . . JIMMER FREDETTE should have a role off the bench, but his ball-handling is not where it has to be for an NBA point guard . . . FRANCISCO GARCIA's chance seems to have passed him by. FORWARDS: THOMAS ROBINSON should emerge as a starter early in his rookie year. He has his flaws on both ends of the floor, but he brings energy and doesn't need a lot of touches to get his points . . . Even if Robinson knocks him to the bench, JASON THOMPSON should play the five at times and see close to starter's minutes . . . JAMES JOHNSON should also play big minutes soon considering his ability to make positive contributions without a lot of touches . . . CHUCK HAYES should continue to play second-unit minutes as a glue guy . . . TRAVIS OUTLAW has regressed to the point that he's lucky to have a roster spot . . . TYLER HONEYCUTT has an intriguing skill set as a defensive-minded point forward, but he's likely ticketed for the D-League again. CENTERS: DeMARCUS COUSINS came on strong late last season. There's no doubt he has All-Star potential, but between his awful shot selection and occasional attitude problems, he just hasn't lived up to his potential. After Team USA passed on him this summer because of reported maturity problems, he might still not get it. |

*Hawks-Kings Preview* =====================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Atlanta (3-4) at Sacramento (2-6), 10:00 p.m. EDT
The Sacramento Kings and Atlanta Hawks each struggled to overcome a short-handed rotation in their most recent games.
While it's unknown if the Hawks will have a pair of players available, the Kings are expected to have DeMarcus Cousins back in the lineup for Friday night's matchup in Sacramento.
Cousins was suspended for two games after he confronted San Antonio television analyst Sean Elliott in a "hostile manner" following a 97-86 defeat to the Spurs last Friday. The NBA players' association is attempting to recoup the center's lost pay from those contests.
Without their leading scorer and rebounder, the Kings (2-6) suffered two more losses, at the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday and to Portland on Tuesday.
"Despite believing the penalty (is) unwarranted, I want to apologize to the Sacramento Kings, our fans and especially to my coaches and teammates for this distraction of our goals," Cousins said in a statement. "As a leader of the team, I have to make the best decisions so my teammates can count on me. I am committed to continued growth and being the best player I can be."
Starting guard Isaiah Thomas also missed the 103-86 loss to the Trail Blazers due to personal reasons and his replacement, Aaron Brooks, didn't return after injuring his left ankle in the first quarter. Thomas is expected to back, but Brooks' status is uncertain.
The Kings got top draft pick Thomas Robinson back Tuesday after his own two-game ban for elbowing Detroit's Jonas Jerebko during a 105-103 victory Nov. 7. He had a career-high 12 points off the bench against Portland, but James Johnson was the only starter to score more than 10, registering a season-best 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting.
"The stuff that has happened to our team over the last few games, that's the frustrating part," coach Keith Smart said. "These guys that are playing right now are giving their all. Obviously when our team was intact, we were much better. We got to make sure that we don't have these kind of incidents anymore."
The Hawks' Al Horford and Devin Harris had to deal with circumstances more out of their control as both were hit with a stomach illness before Wednesday's game at Golden State, the third in a four-game West Coast road trip.
Already struggling to find consistent scoring, those absences hardly helped, but Atlanta proved competitive in a 92-88 loss. Lou Williams had 18 points off the bench, and Josh Smith provided 16 points and 10 rebounds.
"It was a gutsy performance by my guys," coach Larry Drew said. "After going down by 12 at one point, we fought back. A little short-handed tonight but still we had an opportunity."
After topping 100 points in each of their first two games, the Hawks (3-4) have averaged 87.4 over their five. The Kings, meanwhile, have allowed an average of 100.7 over their last six contests.
Atlanta has gotten the better of Sacramento's defense lately, averaging 110.3 points during an eight-game win streak in the series.
Smith had 28 points in a 106-99 victory in northern California on March 11 while Cousins equaled that output and grabbed 12 rebounds.
Cousins' 24.0-point average in three games against the Hawks is his best versus any opponent.
