KEY GAME INFORMATION
MEMPHIS: GUARDS: So much for head coach David Joerger picking up the tempo. MIKE CONLEY has become a much better half-court player, a requirement on this team . . . COURTNEY LEE will likely be the offensive side of their 2-guard platoon, as he was late last season . . . He lost some minutes late last season, but there's still a part-time role for TONY ALLEN . . . VINCE CARTER will take over Mike Miller's old role, a floor spacer at both wing spots . . . The Grizzlies blocked NICK CALATHES' move back to Europe to keep him around for point guard depth. He is suspended for the first 13 games of the season . . . JORDAN ADAMS comes from UCLA with a strong statistical profile. He might not break into the rotation as a rookie, though . . . BENO UDRIH bought himself another season with strong postseason play. FORWARDS: ZACH RANDOLPH remains the go-to scorer in Memphis. And he's playing for what might be his last big NBA payday . . . TAYSHAUN PRINCE has faded fast, and his expiring contract might be his greatest asset right now . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER returns after missing most of last season with a stress fracture in his foot. He'll have to battle his way back into the rotation after the acquisition of Vince Carter . . . Second-rounder JARNELL STOKES has a football player's build and is quick around the basket, but he could be looking at a season spent mostly in the D-League . . . JON LEUER is still doing Jon Leuer things, shooting well from long range and grabbing occasional rebounds. CENTERS: MARC GASOL will earn a max contract if he keeps playing at this level. Along with very good defense, he's become a valuable facilitator for this team on the offensive end of the court . . . KOSTA KOUFOS is one of the league's better back-up centers. He fits well in the Grizzlies' slow-tempo system.
PORTLAND: GUARDS: DAMIAN LILLARD might be the most complete offensive point guard in the NBA. He's a legitimately great shooter, and quick enough off the dribble to get wherever he wants inside the paint . . . WESLEY MATTHEWS runs, runs and runs off the ball as a spot-up shooter . . . STEVE BLAKE is most likely to absorb Mo Williams' old sixth-man role. He can take some ball-handling duties, but at this point his value is as a spot-up shooter . . . He had his rookie season erased by injuries, and it's a crowded rotation, but C.J. McCOLLUM might be able to shoot his way into significant minutes . . . WILL BARTON is a practice player unless he develops a three-point shot . . . ALLEN CRABBE will likely bounce between Portland and the D-League again. FORWARDS: LaMARCUS ALDRIDGE's combination of length and mid-range shooting makes him virtually unguardable when he's on . . . NICOLAS BATUM often runs the offense with Lillard working off the ball. Batum can shoot, too. There's no real weakness in his game . . . He tore a thumb ligament during Summer League play, but THOMAS ROBINSON is already back on the court. He's a hustle guy off the bench, but has a limited offensive game and can't defend bigger 4's . . . DORELL WRIGHT will likely bounce in and out of the rotation again due to his streaky shooting . . . JOEL FREELAND's skill set is limited, but he can play the 4 and the 5 . . . VICTOR CLAVER will try to work his way back into the rotation as a defensive specialist. CENTERS: ROBIN LOPEZ proved a perfect complement to Aldridge, and should handle the bulk of the minutes at center again . . . CHRIS KAMAN gives Portland s a more offensive-minded option off the bench . . . It will be another developmental season for MEYERS LEONARD

*Grizzlies-Trail Blazers Preview* =================================

By JOHN KOSIK STATS Editor

Memphis At Portland, Game Three, 10:30 p.m. EDT

With a handful of injuries and their top scorers shooting poorly, the Portland Trail Blazers are hoping the raucous crowd at Moda Center can provide a spark.

Returning home with an 0-2 deficit in their first-round series against the Memphis Grizzlies, the Blazers look to avoid being pushed to the brink Saturday night.

Portland failed to earn homecourt advantage for this series despite winning the Northwest Division, and Memphis quickly showed why it was one of the NBA's best home teams this season (31-10) with victories of 14 and 15 points in the first two games.

The Blazers also boasted one of the league's best home marks, going 32-9 at Moda Center - considered one of the loudest arenas in basketball - but they've dropped five of the last six meetings with the Grizzlies in Portland, including both this season.

Those two losses were part of a four-game season sweep by Memphis, which has now lost only once in its last 12 against Portland. The Grizzlies have limited the Blazers to 29.7 percent shooting from 3-point range in that span and won by double digits seven times.

That trend continued in Game 2 on Wednesday with Memphis again stifling Portland's outside game. The Blazers hit six of their 20 attempts from long range in a 97-82 loss after going 8 for 26 in Game 1 on Sunday.

The poor-shooting bug has infected leading scorers LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard. Aldridge was 4 of 6 in the first quarter Wednesday but went 3 of 14 the rest of the way, while Lillard shot 5 of 21 - including 0 for 6 from outside the arc - in the opener before going 5 of 16 in Game 2 with just one make in five 3-point attempts.

Aldridge has averaged 28.0 points and 14.0 rebounds in the series but has shot 37.0 percent. Lillard's average of 16.0 points is five below his season mark.

"I think obviously I didn't really shoot as well as I would have liked to in either of the first two games," Lillard told the team's official website. "They're doing a great job defensively. I'm trying to figure out the coverages, listening to the way they communicate to figure out what they're trying to do."

C.J. McCollum also has been off, totaling eight points on 4-of-21 shooting after previously averaging 15.6 points in April. He's seen increased minutes in place of Arron Afflalo, who has missed five straight games with a shoulder strain.

Injuries have thinned Portland's inside presence as well. Forward Dorell Wright is out with a broken hand and center Chris Kaman sat Game 2 after spraining his ankle Tuesday in practice. The team announced Thursday that Afflalo is probable for Game 3, while Kaman remains questionable.

With Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph struggling to score against Aldridge and Robin Lopez in Game 2, the Grizzlies relied on their guards to carry most of the weight.

The backcourt of Mike Conley and Courtney Lee scored 18 points apiece for Memphis, which was 8 of 16 from 3-point range. Gasol and Randolph still played their part, combining for 25 points and 17 rebounds, but were 9 of 31 from the field.

"Marc and Zach sacrificed for themselves tonight," Conley told the Grizzlies' official website. "They weren't making a lot of shots so they were setting hard screens, running the floor, creating lanes for all the guards to make plays and we were just going with what was working. The next night it might be the opposite.

"That's just the way that this team is built."

Conley and the Grizzlies have done a good job protecting the ball, with just 14 turnovers in the series. Those have led to only 16 points for Portland while Memphis has scored 36 off the Blazers' 27 turnovers.

The Grizzlies also had a franchise playoff-record 29 second-chance points Wednesday on just 12 rebounds en route to their first 2-0 lead in a playoff series. Teams with a 2-0 lead have won a series 94 percent of the time under the 16-team playoff format.
