KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHICAGO: GUARDS: There's no medical reason why DERRICK ROSE can't be 100 percent healthy this year. But, as we saw in abbreviated action last season, his confidence may never come back . . . JIMMY BUTLER will still play major minutes this year, though Chicago's added depth on the wing means he's no longer a candidate to lead the league in playing time . . . KIRK HINRICH will return to a straight back-up role. His defense guarantees him minutes at both guard spots in a reserve role . . . TONY SNELL was inconsistent as a rookie, but has the defensive skill set to play solid minutes . . . AARON BROOKS gives the Bulls a more offense-heavy option to lead the second unit. He has his work cut out for him to claim the role D.J. Augustin held last season. FORWARDS: Despite the rough end to his Lakers career, PAU GASOL still has something left in the tank. He will see fewer minutes in a deep Bulls frontcourt, but he's a great fit on the offensive end . . . It seems like only a matter of time before MIKE DUNLEAVY relinquishes his starting spot. The Bulls now have plenty of shooters on this roster . . . TAJ GIBSON will reprise his sixth-man role. He'll be one of the league's top reserves; talent-wise he's a borderline All-Star . . . Rookie DOUG McDERMOTT will supplant Dunleavy once he grasps head coach Tom Thibodeau's defensive concepts. McDermott is an elite shooter who can get by defensively . . . NIKOLA MIROTIC might have some growing pains, but the Euro star can play the 3 or stretch-4 and has a very good offensive game. CENTERS: JOAKIM NOAH is an elite center, as he's outstanding defensively and has developed into one of the best passing big men in the NBA. The Bulls will do what they can to keep him fresh for the postseason, a luxury they have with Gasol and Mirotic adding depth to the frontcourt rotation. NAZR MOHAMMED is back as a big body with the ability to consistently keep the bench warm.
PORTLAND: GUARDS: DAMIAN LILLARD might be the most complete offensive point guard in the NBA. He's a legitimately great shooter, and quick enough off the dribble to get wherever he wants inside the paint . . . WESLEY MATTHEWS runs, runs and runs off the ball as a spot-up shooter . . . STEVE BLAKE is most likely to absorb Mo Williams' old sixth-man role. He can take some ball-handling duties, but at this point his value is as a spot-up shooter . . . He had his rookie season erased by injuries, and it's a crowded rotation, but C.J. McCOLLUM might be able to shoot his way into significant minutes . . . WILL BARTON is a practice player unless he develops a three-point shot . . . ALLEN CRABBE will likely bounce between Portland and the D-League again. FORWARDS: LaMARCUS ALDRIDGE's combination of length and mid-range shooting makes him virtually unguardable when he's on . . . NICOLAS BATUM often runs the offense with Lillard working off the ball. Batum can shoot, too. There's no real weakness in his game . . . He tore a thumb ligament during Summer League play, but THOMAS ROBINSON is already back on the court. He's a hustle guy off the bench, but has a limited offensive game and can't defend bigger 4's . . . DORELL WRIGHT will likely bounce in and out of the rotation again due to his streaky shooting . . . JOEL FREELAND's skill set is limited, but he can play the 4 and the 5 . . . VICTOR CLAVER will try to work his way back into the rotation as a defensive specialist. CENTERS: ROBIN LOPEZ proved a perfect complement to Aldridge, and should handle the bulk of the minutes at center again . . . CHRIS KAMAN gives Portland s a more offensive-minded option off the bench . . . It will be another developmental season for MEYERS LEONARD

*Bulls-Trail Blazers Preview* =============================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Chicago (8-4) at Portland (8-3), 10:30 p.m. EDT

The Portland Trail Blazers have overcome some adversity to keep their win streak intact. They'll try to extend it by continuing their recent dominance over a team that's experienced its own hardships.

If two of their top players are out again, the visiting Chicago Bulls could have a considerable challenge trying to snap the rested Blazers' five-game run and end a six-game losing streak in the series Friday night.

Portland has pulled off sizable comebacks in two of its last four games. It rallied from 16 points down in the third quarter for a 102-93 win over visiting New Orleans on Monday. The Blazers (8-3) also came back from a 23-point deficit in a 102-100 victory against Charlotte on Nov. 11.

"That will pay off down the road in January and February because we'll know that no matter what, we have a chance to come back and win the game," coach Terry Stotts said.

Damian Lillard had 24 points Monday, including the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 1:14 remaining, and is averaging 27.0 in his last four games. LaMarcus Aldridge provided 22 points and nine rebounds after missing one game with an illness.

The Blazers have also played their last four games without starting forward Nicolas Batum, but he could return from a bruised right knee Friday. Batum has scored a combined 38 points in the last two visits from Chicago.

"I just get some rest and make sure my knee is 100 percent before I go back," Batum told the team's official website. "I feel good. One more practice (Thursday) and I should be fine for Friday night."

It's unknown if the Bulls (8-4) will have either Derrick Rose (hamstring) or Pau Gasol (calf) available.

Rose, averaging 18.0 points in just five games, sat out his third straight contest Thursday, a 103-88 loss in Sacramento. Gasol, averaging 18.6 points and a team-best 10.6 rebounds, has missed the first two games on the annual circus road trip.

Leading scorer Jimmy Butler had 23 points in his team's first road loss this season but no other Bull had more than 12. Chicago's 6-0 road start matched the best in franchise history.

The Bulls allowed the Kings to shoot 51.4 percent - including 63.2 percent in the second quarter, when they were outscored 30-18.

"We got a gap in the middle of the second quarter where we got hurt," Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau said. "The game was won there and we couldn't get a handle on it the rest of the way."

Portland, winners of six in a row at home, has also taken six consecutive home games against the Bulls and 12 of the past 14. The Blazers have won 11 of 13 overall matchups.

They've held Chicago to an average of 88.2 points in the last five victories in the series with Rose appearing in just one game.

Aldridge, a former Bulls draft pick, averaged 8.5 points on 20.0 percent shooting in last season's two matchups after averaging 28.3 points and 59.6 percent shooting in his prior seven. Wesley Matthews has totaled 49 points on 61.8 percent shooting (21 of 34) in the past two visits from Chicago.

The Blazers won't have reserve guard C.J. McCollum for at least one month after he broke his right index finger Monday.

Portland hasn't won six in a row since an 11-game run Nov. 8-25, 2013. The first win in that streak also marked the first of eight straight at home.
