KEY GAME INFORMATION
BROOKLYN: GUARDS: DERON WILLIAMS is healthy and got a much-improved supporting cast to work with. He could re-enter the NBA's best point guard discussion . . . JOE JOHNSON won't have the ballin his hands as much as he used to in Atlanta. It might give him a chance to concentrate on regaining his stroke as one of the NBA's best shooters . . . MARSHON BROOKS will look to settle in as a high-scoring sixth man. He'll be trade bait for most of the season . . . After a disastrous year in Chicago, C.J. WATSON will be asked to spell Williams for a few minutes a night . . . KEITH BOGANS is still kicking around as a second unit glue guy . . . TYSHAWN TAYLOR is an at-times out-of-control combo guard, but the rookie could threaten Watson's role at some point. FORWARDS: KRIS HUMPHRIES' contract was structured to make him easier to trade. He'll rebound and get his put-backs, and the Nets will likely showcase him a bit . . . GERALD WALLACE is slowing down, and now that he's signed his last big NBA contract he might not have much incentive to live up to his 'Crash' nickname. Brooklyn has no choice but to give him heavy minutes considering their investment . . . MIRZA TELETOVIC is a veteran stretch four. Consider him a penniless man's Channing Frye . . . TORNIKE SHENGELIA played himself into a roster spot this summer. He's a mediocre athlete, but a cagey scorer with a high basketball IQ . . . JOSH CHILDRESS and JERRY STACKHOUSE were added in September for depth . . . REGGIE EVANS will flop unconvincingly, punch opponents in the jewels and bring other 'tough guy' intangibles. CENTERS: BROOK LOPEZ had been remarkably durable before last year's foot injury, and he should be fully healed by the start of training camp. He's gifted offensively, but will continue to grab relatively few rebounds and generally get fried defensively. He's also a candidate to be traded midseason if another franchise can stomach his max contract . . . As insurance, former Wizards big man ANDRAY BLATCHE was brought in. He could be the team's best interior defender, able to play either the four or five spot.
PORTLAND: GUARDS: Portland will turn point guard duties over to rookie DAMIAN LILLARD. The leap from Big Sky Conference to NBA will be a big one, but Lillard is an efficient scorer who can manage the offense . . . WESLEY MATTHEWS is more of a glue guy. He can't create his own offense, but he can heat up as a streaky catch-and-shoot guy . . . RONNIE PRICE should emerge as Lillard's top backup, a role he's filled at numerous stops . . . Second-rounder WILL BARTON could emerge as a rotation player. He's a versatile wing who must prove he can play off the ball . . . SASHA PAVLOVIC will play both the two and three, and can still stroke it from long distance . . . NOLAN SMITH, a misstep of the last regime, is a fringe roster player . . . ELLIOT WILLIAMS, a defensive-minded combo guard, tore his Achilles in mid-September and expects to miss the entire season. FORWARDS: LaMARCUS ALDRIDGE had a couple of health scares over the past six months, but he should enter the season 100 percent. He's clearly Portland's best player . . . NICOLAS BATUM felt rightly disrespected by his secondary role in Portland. All signs point to a bigger role in 2012-13 . . . VICTOR CLAVER is an athletic scrapper who won't do much offensively even if he does get big minutes . . . JOEL FREELAND could become their first big man off the bench . . . JARED JEFFRIES is still relevant as a defensive specialist . . . The highlight of LUKE BABBITT's career might be that mention on Onion:Sportsdome. CENTERS: J.J. HICKSON is a black hole on offense and a liability on defense, but he can score and rebound, which is good enough to be the starting center in Portland's weak frontcourt . . . MEYERS LEONARD might not be quite ready for 30-plus minutes, but he'll have to learn on the fly due to Portland's lack of veteran bigs. He has some long-term upside as a 7-footer with some nice athleticism and touch inside 10 feet.

*Nets-Trail Blazers Preview* ============================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer

Brooklyn (41-29) at Portland (33-37), 10:30 p.m. EDT

The Portland Trail Blazers are running out of time to make up ground in the Western Conference playoff race, and their remaining schedule features teams either currently in postseason position or battling for it like themselves.

That includes the Brooklyn Nets, who could have Joe Johnson back in the lineup as they continue their road trip Wednesday night.

Portland (33-37) is in 11th place in the conference and trails the Los Angeles Lakers by 2 1/2 games with 12 remaining for the West's final playoff spot. The Blazers finished their a 2-3 road trip after falling 103-83 at Oklahoma City on Sunday.

Coach Terry Stotts was pleased with the effort given the difficult trip, though he knows his team has a tough road ahead to qualify for the postseason.

"It was our fifth game in seven nights and we just didn't have it at the end," Stotts said. "I don't think that the final score is indicative of how the game went."

Fatigue may have resulted in Portland's 40.5 field goal percentage and lowest point total since a 99-63 loss at New Orleans on Feb. 13.

"To shoot a good percentage, you have to get some easy baskets," Stotts said. "We didn't have many of those."

Things likely will be just as tough for the Blazers down the stretch. They face ninth-place Utah on Friday and Monday and also have matchups with 10th-place Dallas and the Lakers.

Seven contests will be against teams currently holding playoff spots in the West and another is this matchup with the Nets, who have clinched their first postseason appearance since 2007.

Brooklyn (41-29) is in fourth place in the East and improved to 3-1 on its eight-game road trip with a 102-100 win over Phoenix on Sunday. It has won seven of 10 overall and leads Atlanta and Chicago by 2 1/2 games for home-court advantage in the first round of the postseason.

"It wasn't pretty. It wasn't like we are going to say we did 800 things well but we did enough things to win," coach P.J. Carlesimo said of Sunday's victory. "We found a way to get the win."

The Nets did so without Johnson, who is battling a right quad contusion suffered in Saturday's loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. He hopes to play Wednesday, but said he won't rush back with the playoffs approaching.

"I'm just going to try and get this thing right," Johnson said. "It's frustrating to sit out and watch. This is the most important time of the season."

Deron Williams stepped up in Johnson's absence, scoring 20 points and adding 11 assists. He's averaging 25.0 points on the trip.

"A win is a win. We will take it," Williams said. "It is a good start (on the road). It wasn't the way we wanted to win it but it is a win none the less and puts us 3-1 which is pretty good on this road trip."

Williams finished with 15 points and 12 assists in a 98-85 win over Portland on Nov. 25. Gerald Wallace scored only two points and shot 1 for 8 from the field against his former team that traded him to the Nets for a first-round pick in 2012.

The pick turned out to be Blazers' rookie-of-the-year candidate Damian Lillard, who is averaging 19.1 points.

Portland has won four straight home meetings over the Nets.
