KEY GAME INFORMATION
INDIANA: LAST SEASON: 48-34, lost in first round.
COACH: Nate McMillan (fourth season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Malcolm Brogdon (15.6 ppg), G Jeremy Lamb (15.3 ppg), F Domantas Sabonis (14.1 ppg), F T.J. Warren (18.0 ppg), C Myles Turner (13.3)
KEY LOSSES: F Thaddeus Young, F Bojan Bogdanovic, G Darren Collison, G Cory Joseph, G Tyreke Evans
KEY ADDITIONS: Brogdon, Lamb, Warren, G T.J. McConnell, F Justin Holiday
PLAYERS TO WATCH: The big question heading into this season is when will two-time All-Star Victor Oladipo return from a ruptured quad tendon in his right knee? He's not expected back until at least December and when he does start playing, it's unclear how long it will take him to return to form. Until then, this will be Turner's team and everyone will be watching how this new starting lineup plays together. Indiana expects Brogdon to play like the $85 million man while Sabonis moves from a valuable backup role into the starting lineup for the first time. Sabonis and Turner being paired together give the Pacers a more traditional two big-man look.
OUTLOOK: The Pacers know it will take time for all the new faces to get acclimated in sync, and they expect some rough patches early. But the offseason moves should give Indiana more scoring punch and better balance offensively. Defensively, it will be interesting to see how Sabonis or Turner defends the perimeter. But if the Pacers have a solid start and Oladipo is back to full strength before the All-Star break, they could become a surprise contender in the Eastern Conference.
PHOENIX: LAST SEASON: 19-63, finished 15th in Western Conference.
COACH: Monty Williams (first season with Suns, sixth season overall, 173-221).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Ricky Rubio (12.7 ppg), G Devin Booker (26.6), F Kelly Oubre Jr. (15.2), F Dario Saric (10.6), C Deandre Ayton (16.3)
KEY LOSSES: F T.J. Warren, G/F Josh Jackson
KEY ADDITIONS: Rubio, Saric, G/F Cameron Johnson, F Frank Kaminsky III, F Cheick Diallo, G Ty Jerome
PLAYERS TO WATCH: The Suns are trying to build a winning team around the core of Ayton and Booker, who are both still young and put up big numbers last season. The 7-foot-1 Ayton averaged a double-double in his rookie season while shooting nearly 59 percent from the field. Booker averaged 26.6 points per game and nearly seven assists. Oubre was a pleasant surprise after joining the team midway through last season, scoring nearly 17 points per game after the trade and playing good defense. Rubio gives the Suns an experienced point guard who should help Ayton, Booker and Oubre get better scoring chances. Rubio's presence also allows Booker to play off the ball and focus on scoring.
OUTLOOK: The Suns should be much better than the 19-win version of a year ago. Rubio's presence along with the input first-year coach Monty Williams should give the starting lineup some discipline and structure. Phoenix's ceiling depends on the development of Ayton and Booker. If the two can develop into All-Star caliber players than there might be something brewing in the desert. The major problem is the Western Conference is still stacked with good teams, so a move into the playoffs feels a little far-fetched this season.
PREVIEW
Pacers looking for faster start against Suns

Coming off their most lopsided loss of the season, the Indiana Pacers hope for a better start in Wednesday night's road game against the Phoenix Suns.

The Pacers were upended 118-88 on Monday at Utah against a Jazz team that has been tough at home on opponents all season with a 17-3 record in Salt Lake City. Making things even tougher for Indiana was that Monday's game came a day after defeating the Denver Nuggets at altitude.

The physical nature of the challenge showed up early and never went away. The Pacers shot 42.6 percent from the field in the first half and 41.9 percent for the game. They were outrebounded 53-30 and had just four second-chance points to 22 for Utah.

The dud of a performance ended a five-game winning streak for a team that had been on the rise and was looking to get off to a hot start on their current five-game road trip.

"We did get off to a slow start," Pacers head coach Nate McMillan said. "Just didn't have a lot of movement. That team came out aggressive and they have a lot of weapons over there."

They also had the advantage of a day of rest and a game in their own arena.

"Just one of those nights," the Pacers' Myles Turner said. "Some people call it a schedule loss, but I think that they came out and they moved the ball very well, forced our defense to work and we weren't hitting shots so it's a recipe for disaster."

Meanwhile the Suns are coming off a 120-118 loss at home Monday against San Antonio.

Phoenix trailed by 20 points in the third quarter and was down 96-83 heading into the fourth, but a late charge gave the Suns their first lead of the game with just under three minutes remaining. They were outscored 9-5 down the stretch, but head coach Monty Williams still liked what he saw in the final quarter.

"That's the deal: resiliency," Williams said, per the Arizona Republic. "That's who we've been all year. It won't change. The guys in our group fight until the end and I'm proud of that. That's a DNA that we're about every day."

It was just the second defeat in the last six games for the Suns, who are finding a rhythm with Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton finally together for the past 11 games following Ayton's suspension and an ankle injury.

The Suns are 18-25 on the season but 6-5 since Dec. 30. The duo combined for 62 points on Monday with Booker scoring 37, while Ayton added 12 rebounds. Booker leads the NBA with 32.4 points per game in January.

Kelly Oubre Jr. returned for the Suns after missing two games while in concussion protocol, but Aron Baynes (hip) and Cameron Johnson (quad) did not play.

The Suns are one victory from matching last season's total of 19.
