KEY GAME INFORMATION
BOSTON: LAST SEASON: 49-33
COACH: Brad Stevens (seventh season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Kemba Walker (25.6 ppg), G Gordon Hayward (11.5), F Jaylen Brown. (13.0), F Jayson Tatum (15.7), C Enes Kanter (13.7)
KEY LOSSES: G Kyrie Irving, F/C Al Horford, F Marcus Morris, G Terry Rozier.
KEY ADDITIONS: Walker, Kanter, G Romeo Langford, F Grant Williams, G Carsen Edwards.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: It starts with Walker, who jumped at the chance in free agency to join a perennial playoff team. Following Kyrie Irving's departure to Brooklyn, it will also give Walker the opportunity to do what Irving couldn't: lead the Celtics to an NBA Finals. He'll need help, though. And that will again put the spotlight on youngsters Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. Both took small steps backward last season as infighting and chemistry issues plagued the team. Now, both will have key roles, much like they did two seasons ago when Irving missed the playoffs and they helped get the team to the Eastern Conference finals. It's an especially big year for Brown. The Celtics have until Oct. 21 to decide whether to extend his contract for another season or let him become a restricted free agent next summer.
OUTLOOK: The Celtics are going to have to tweak their style of play a little without Irving or Horford. Irving was their chief scorer and Horford played a huge role facilitating offense in the half court as well as on defense. Kanter is a big man that can run, which should fit in nicely with the up-tempo style this athletic roster is built for. Whether this team is ultimately able to be a threat to win the East will depend on how well Walker leads and if the starting unit gets enough support from its youthful group of reserves.
PHOENIX: LAST SEASON: 19-63, finished 15th in Western Conference.
COACH: Monty Williams (first season with Suns, sixth season overall, 173-221).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Ricky Rubio (12.7 ppg), G Devin Booker (26.6), F Kelly Oubre Jr. (15.2), F Dario Saric (10.6), C Deandre Ayton (16.3)
KEY LOSSES: F T.J. Warren, G/F Josh Jackson
KEY ADDITIONS: Rubio, Saric, G/F Cameron Johnson, F Frank Kaminsky III, F Cheick Diallo, G Ty Jerome
PLAYERS TO WATCH: The Suns are trying to build a winning team around the core of Ayton and Booker, who are both still young and put up big numbers last season. The 7-foot-1 Ayton averaged a double-double in his rookie season while shooting nearly 59 percent from the field. Booker averaged 26.6 points per game and nearly seven assists. Oubre was a pleasant surprise after joining the team midway through last season, scoring nearly 17 points per game after the trade and playing good defense. Rubio gives the Suns an experienced point guard who should help Ayton, Booker and Oubre get better scoring chances. Rubio's presence also allows Booker to play off the ball and focus on scoring.
OUTLOOK: The Suns should be much better than the 19-win version of a year ago. Rubio's presence along with the input first-year coach Monty Williams should give the starting lineup some discipline and structure. Phoenix's ceiling depends on the development of Ayton and Booker. If the two can develop into All-Star caliber players than there might be something brewing in the desert. The major problem is the Western Conference is still stacked with good teams, so a move into the playoffs feels a little far-fetched this season.
PREVIEW
Suns aim to end homestand on high note vs. Celtics

The Phoenix Suns' draft day trade with Boston to acquire center Aron Baynes from Boston did not turn heads. Until recently.

The Suns would not be where they are -- 7-4, their best start since 2009-10 -- without Baynes, who has fit in so seamlessly during Deandre Ayton's 25-game suspension for violating the league's anti-drug policy that a legitimate question surrounds how the rotation will shake out when Ayton returns.

Boston (10-2) has been even better. They had a 10-game winning streak broken in a 100-99 loss at Sacramento on Sunday before playing the second game of a back-to-back Monday in Phoenix, the third stop on their five-game road trip.

"The streak put more emphasis on us to do things better," said Boston guard Marcus Smart, whose shot in the final seconds rolled off the rim against the Kings.

"Although we don't want to lose, the loss is a good loss. Brings us back down to earth."

Suns coach Monty Williams remembered when general manager James Jones mentioned the possibility of landing Baynes during draft-room conversations.

"To have a guy like that, on your team, in your locker room, it was a no-brainer for me," Williams said.

"We just knew it was going to help Deandre (Ayton) and our culture. We're really trying to develop a culture that guys can gravitate towards and want to be in. We needed him to be a big part of that and be a positive impact on it."

Baynes -- acquired with a 2019 draft choice that became Ty Jerome for a top-seven protected 2020 first-round pick -- is averaging a career high 15.0 points, tripling his average over his first seven seasons.

He has made 22 of 47 3-point attempts, most on open looks after rotating to the top of the key in pick-and-roll action, already a career season-high. He had 25 career threes entering the year.

"I credit the guys I am playing with," Baynes said. "They are creating so much space and time for me. It is fun playing with these guys."

Boston is averaging about 114 points per game while doing its best work on the defensive end, limiting opponents to 106 points and 42.7 percent shooting. They are third in the league with a plus-8.0 in point differential. The Suns are fifth (7.1).

"This is a relentless group," Jayson Tatum said after a trip-opening victory at Golden State. "When things get tough, we never put our heads down."

The Suns will play the final game of a six-game homestand, a period that has helped Williams further implement his style and culture. The Suns have been home for 16 straight days, since a 114-105 victory in Memphis on Nov. 2. The play Sacramento on the road Tuesday.

"We are still building a program," Williams said. "I'm so thankful we got some wins, but our process is still in the infant stages. I have to keep my eyes on that, that we are still building.

"We don't have a sustained culture yet. We don't have a sustained program yet. So when you are home for segments like this, it is a chance to us to establish it.

The Suns are 3-2 during the homestand, with victories over Philadelphia, Brooklyn and Atlanta and losses to Miami and the Lakers.
