|
| | | SAN ANTONIO: GUARDS: TONY PARKER may not be ageless, as he'll sit a handful of games during the regular season. But when the 32-year-old is on the court, he still gets into the lane whenever he wants . . . He can't do anything off the dribble, but DANNY GREEN is one of the league's elite spot-up shooters . . . MANU GINOBILI will need some regular-season maintenance as far as playing time goes, especially coming off a stress fracture in his leg. He's essential for the postseason . . . MARCO BELINELLI will have a significant role off the bench due to his ability to defend, shoot and do some ball-handling . . . It might be a lost regular season for NBA Finals star PATTY MILLS as he works his way back from shoulder surgery. He hopes to make his season debut in mid-January . . . CORY JOSEPH will pick up a few more minutes while Mills is out. FORWARDS: There's plenty of buzz surrounding KAWHI LEONARD after his Finals MVP performance, though it seems unlikely they'll make him the centerpiece of this offense as long as their vets are still going strong . . . Thirty-eight-year-old TIM DUNCAN is still one of the better power forwards in the league. Just like Parker and Ginobili, he'll take the occasional DNP-CD. His rebounding and shot-blocking rates continue to surge. The only real disappointment last season was that his FT shooting slid back towards his sub-70% career mark . . . JEFF AYRES is one of the new anonymous big men at the end of the San Antonio bench. He'll see a handful of starts when Gregg Popovich rests his star players . . . KYLE ANDERSON is too much of a defensive liability to see major minutes as a rookie, but his versatile skill set suggests he could be Boris Diaw's heir apparent . . . MATT BONNER will hoist some threes during the regular season. CENTERS: Popovich rotates his centers depending on the situation. TIAGO SPLITTER, the more traditional 5, will likely take the bulk of the minutes again . . . BORIS DIAW will play when the offense gets stagnant, especially when opponents go small. | | PHOENIX: GUARDS: This is GORAN DRAGIC's team, and he'll continue to thrive in head coach Jeff Hornacek's up-tempo system . . . ERIC BLEDSOE's contract extension took longer than planned, but both sides are happy it's done. Durability is a concern, but he's an explosive scorer who can defend, and a fringe All-Star when he's healthy . . . They do have a logjam in the backcourt with ISAIAH THOMAS coming in. Thomas would likely become a high-energy sixth man, a role he's better suited for than a starter . . . GERALD GREEN will see solid minutes considering he can play both wing spots. The question is whether the vastly improved three-point shooting was for real . . . It's a developmental season for 20-year-old rookie TYLER ENNIS . . . ARCHIE GOODWIN will need to polish both his point-guard skills and his shooting. FORWARDS: MARKIEFF MORRIS was a highly effective stretch-4 with the second unit last season, and he could be in for a full-time role now that Channing Frye is gone . . . Retained as a free agent, P.J. TUCKER will continue to be a glue guy in the starting five . . . MARCUS MORRIS has fallen behind his twin brother in the rotation. He's more of a 'tweener who doesn't quite fit in that stretch-4 role . . . Rookie T.J. WARREN fits Hornacek's system and should have his way with opposing bench players. He's a below-the-rim, mid-range shooter with limited upside, but crafty enough to pile up points against second-unit talent. He'll miss the first two weeks of the season with a fractured thumb . . . ANTHONY TOLLIVER gives the Suns some depth at the 4-spot, and he fits the system with his long-range shooting. CENTERS: MILES PLUMLEE is the best option in an underwhelming rotation in the middle. He's an energy guy who does little else . . . He lost his rookie season, and ALEX LEN is still in the developmental stage. His upside is much higher than Plumlee's, and he might get minutes because of his screening and defensive mobility. |

*Spurs-Suns Preview* ====================
By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer
San Antonio (35-23) at Phoenix (31-28), 9:00 p.m. EDT
The Phoenix Suns had difficulty adjusting after trading away two of their top scorers, but they appear to be back on track thanks in large part to Eric Bledsoe.
The San Antonio Spurs are also hoping to have put their recent woes behind them.
Phoenix goes for a third consecutive victory Saturday night against the Spurs, who try to make it two in a row as they close their annual rodeo road trip.
The Suns (31-28) recently dropped eight of nine, including their first three after shipping Goran Dragic to Miami and Isaiah Thomas to Boston. The duo was averaging a combined 31.4 points, leaving Phoenix without a good chunk of its offense.
The Suns, however, appear to have figured things out with back-to-back wins, 110-96 at Denver on Wednesday and 117-113 in overtime over Oklahoma City on Thursday. Bledsoe led the charge with 28 points, nine assists and career highs of 13 rebounds and four blocks against the Thunder.
"I just tried to show a little more enthusiasm," Bledsoe said. "My teammates, they feed off of that. That's what my coaches have been telling me, that's what my team has been telling me, just step up and that's what I'm trying to do."
Bledsoe is averaging 22.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 8.3 assists over the last three games. He's one of just four players averaging at least 17.0 points, 5.0 boards and 6.0 assists on the season.
"I just want to win, and win as a team," he said. "It's not about one person, but at the end of the day, I do feel like I've got a bigger load to handle now."
The Spurs (35-23) had dropped each of their four games since the break by an average of 10.0 points before beating Sacramento 107-96 on Friday. Tony Parker scored 19 points and Kawhi Leonard added 17 as San Antonio improved to 3-5 on its nine-game trek.
Parker had been limited to a combined nine points while shooting 3 of 21 over the previous three games before finding his form. The Spurs have won 18 of their last 20 when he scores at least 12.
"That was huge for us. That was huge for him," teammate Tim Duncan said of Parker. "I know he's been really hard on himself over these last couple games and really struggling, and hopefully that builds the confidence he needs and that we need him to have."
The Spurs shot just 39.8 percent but made a season-high 29 of 32 at the foul line.
San Antonio is 13-4 against the Suns since 2010-11, but it's been limited to 87.0 points per game in dropping its last two visits to Phoenix. The Spurs fell 94-89 in the desert Oct. 31 before pulling out a 100-95 home victory Jan. 9 behind 20 points from Danny Green.
Suns forward Markieff Morris had averaged 19.2 points on 62.3 percent shooting over a five-game stretch in the series before scoring three on 1-of-13 shooting in last month's defeat.
San Antonio is 15-16 on the road after finishing a league-best 30-11 last season.
The Spurs are averaging 97.3 points as the visiting team compared to 104.3 at home, and that could be a problem against the Suns, who average 107.7 on their own court to rank second in the NBA.
