| | | CHICAGO: GUARDS: There's no medical reason why DERRICK ROSE can't be 100 percent healthy this year. But, as we saw in abbreviated action last season, his confidence may never come back . . . JIMMY BUTLER will still play major minutes this year, though Chicago's added depth on the wing means he's no longer a candidate to lead the league in playing time . . . KIRK HINRICH will return to a straight back-up role. His defense guarantees him minutes at both guard spots in a reserve role . . . TONY SNELL was inconsistent as a rookie, but has the defensive skill set to play solid minutes . . . AARON BROOKS gives the Bulls a more offense-heavy option to lead the second unit. He has his work cut out for him to claim the role D.J. Augustin held last season. FORWARDS: Despite the rough end to his Lakers career, PAU GASOL still has something left in the tank. He will see fewer minutes in a deep Bulls frontcourt, but he's a great fit on the offensive end . . . It seems like only a matter of time before MIKE DUNLEAVY relinquishes his starting spot. The Bulls now have plenty of shooters on this roster . . . TAJ GIBSON will reprise his sixth-man role. He'll be one of the league's top reserves; talent-wise he's a borderline All-Star . . . Rookie DOUG McDERMOTT will supplant Dunleavy once he grasps head coach Tom Thibodeau's defensive concepts. McDermott is an elite shooter who can get by defensively . . . NIKOLA MIROTIC might have some growing pains, but the Euro star can play the 3 or stretch-4 and has a very good offensive game. CENTERS: JOAKIM NOAH is an elite center, as he's outstanding defensively and has developed into one of the best passing big men in the NBA. The Bulls will do what they can to keep him fresh for the postseason, a luxury they have with Gasol and Mirotic adding depth to the frontcourt rotation. NAZR MOHAMMED is back as a big body with the ability to consistently keep the bench warm. | | PHOENIX: GUARDS: This is GORAN DRAGIC's team, and he'll continue to thrive in head coach Jeff Hornacek's up-tempo system . . . ERIC BLEDSOE's contract extension took longer than planned, but both sides are happy it's done. Durability is a concern, but he's an explosive scorer who can defend, and a fringe All-Star when he's healthy . . . They do have a logjam in the backcourt with ISAIAH THOMAS coming in. Thomas would likely become a high-energy sixth man, a role he's better suited for than a starter . . . GERALD GREEN will see solid minutes considering he can play both wing spots. The question is whether the vastly improved three-point shooting was for real . . . It's a developmental season for 20-year-old rookie TYLER ENNIS . . . ARCHIE GOODWIN will need to polish both his point-guard skills and his shooting. FORWARDS: MARKIEFF MORRIS was a highly effective stretch-4 with the second unit last season, and he could be in for a full-time role now that Channing Frye is gone . . . Retained as a free agent, P.J. TUCKER will continue to be a glue guy in the starting five . . . MARCUS MORRIS has fallen behind his twin brother in the rotation. He's more of a 'tweener who doesn't quite fit in that stretch-4 role . . . Rookie T.J. WARREN fits Hornacek's system and should have his way with opposing bench players. He's a below-the-rim, mid-range shooter with limited upside, but crafty enough to pile up points against second-unit talent. He'll miss the first two weeks of the season with a fractured thumb . . . ANTHONY TOLLIVER gives the Suns some depth at the 4-spot, and he fits the system with his long-range shooting. CENTERS: MILES PLUMLEE is the best option in an underwhelming rotation in the middle. He's an energy guy who does little else . . . He lost his rookie season, and ALEX LEN is still in the developmental stage. His upside is much higher than Plumlee's, and he might get minutes because of his screening and defensive mobility. |

*Bulls-Suns Preview* ====================
By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer
Chicago (30-18) at Phoenix (27-20), 10:30 p.m. EDT
The Chicago Bulls followed one of the most impressive victories in the NBA this season with what may have been an even worse loss.
They'll try to bounce back Friday night against the Phoenix Suns, who hope Isaiah Thomas can remain hot as they cap their longest-ever homestand.
The Bulls (30-18) knocked off league-leading Golden State 113-111 in overtime Tuesday to open a six-game trip. They couldn't sustain their momentum, however, falling 123-118 in double overtime Thursday against the Lakers, who had lost nine straight and are without Kobe Bryant for the remainder of the season.
"In this league, if one team is playing with great intensity and the other one lets up just a slight bit, the players in this league are too good," coach Tom Thibodeau said. "We've played low-energy (basketball), and then it came down to a miracle comeback to get it to overtime."
Chicago gave up 68 points in the paint - the most it had allowed since giving up as many in a 119-118 overtime loss to Denver on March 18. Derrick Rose, who had gone 13 for 33 with a career-high 11 turnovers against the Warriors but hit the game-winner, was 7 of 26 with five turnovers.
The Bulls are 7-6 on the second night of back-to-backs and Rose is averaging 14.7 points on just 36.1 percent shooting while playing in seven.
Jimmy Butler, who missed Tuesday's game with an illness, tied his career high with 35 points after being named an All-Star reserve earlier in the day. He had been limited to 14.9 points per game in his previous 11, down from his season average of 20.4.
The Suns (27-20) are 5-2 on their eight-game homestand after Wednesday's 106-98 win over Washington. They're averaging 112.8 points on 49.2 percent shooting while winning eight of 10 at home following a 6-7 start. They hit 11 3-pointers against the Wizards, the fourth time in five games they've made at least 10.
Chicago has held its last five opponents to 26.6 percent 3-point shooting.
Thomas, who scored 18 and was 4 of 8 from deep, is 19 of 37 from 3-point range in his last five games while averaging 23.2 points. He averaged 22.3 points over his last three meetings with the Bulls and is 7 of 14 from beyond in the arc in his last five matchups.
Phoenix must protect its leads better after nearly squandering a 22-point lead against the Wizards, however. The Suns faltered late in Sunday's 120-100 loss to the Clippers, getting outscored by 22 in the second half.
"We've seen it happen, when we get up we have a tendency to do whatever and not be solid," coach Jeff Hornacek said. "Some of that is the pace. That's how we get the lead - all of a sudden we're coming down and we hit two or three 3s in a row ... Then you have that same stretch of time and you come down and miss two or three in a row and it can reverse quickly the other way."
Goran Dragic appears to be back on track, scoring 20 on 8-of-15 shooting after totaling 12 points on 4 of 16 from the field in back-to-back losses.
The Bulls have won nine of the last 11 meetings, including five straight in Phoenix.
Rose has averaged 25.5 points on 53.9 percent shooting in six career matchups, but hasn't faced the Suns since April 5, 2011.
