KEY GAME INFORMATION
DENVER: GUARDS: TY LAWSON is the facilitator in Denver's up-tempo offense. Durability is a concern, as he missed 15-plus games for the third time in five career seasons during the 2013-14 campaign . . . ARRON AFFLALO is what the Nuggets need. He'll be a No. 3 scorer and, more importantly, gives them a big defensive upgrade . . . Denver can't afford to play RANDY FOYE so many minutes. He's a serviceable reserve, but they won't win games if he's playing 30-plus minutes . . . The Afflalo acquisition blocks him, but GARY HARRIS is tough-nosed on defense and a solid deep threat . . . NATE ROBINSON might unseat Foye for the sixth-man role by midseason, but first he'll have to work his way back from a torn ACL . . . Combo guard ERICK GREEN will pick up garbage-time minutes. FORWARDS: KENNETH FARIED is one of the few bright spots in Denver. He can't generate his own offense, but he's effective filling lanes and picking up garbage points in this system . . . If he's ever 100 percent healthy again, DANILO GALLINARI will be the go-to scorer on this team. But he's a question mark after missing all of last season with a torn ACL . . . WILSON CHANDLER won't be relied on as heavily this season, but he's going to get major minutes as a floor spacer who can play the 2-guard or either forward spot . . . Stretch-4 DARRELL ARTHUR is a solid rotation guy when he's shooting well, but he was laying bricks last season . . . QUINCY MILLER has intriguing athleticism, but remains a raw project . . . Even if he wasn't coming off a torn ACL, J.J. HICKSON would not make this rotation. CENTERS: TIMOFEY MOZGOV may have grabbed the lead in this center-by-committee group with his strong finish to last season . . . A stress fracture cost JaVALE McGEE his chance to secure a full-time role last season. The tantalizing, but consistently disappointing, big man should make the rotation, but has an uphill battle to earn minutes . . . JUSUF NURKIC is a high-upside project as a 7-footer with a legit NBA offensive skill set.
PHOENIX: GUARDS: This is GORAN DRAGIC's team, and he'll continue to thrive in head coach Jeff Hornacek's up-tempo system . . . ERIC BLEDSOE's contract extension took longer than planned, but both sides are happy it's done. Durability is a concern, but he's an explosive scorer who can defend, and a fringe All-Star when he's healthy . . . They do have a logjam in the backcourt with ISAIAH THOMAS coming in. Thomas would likely become a high-energy sixth man, a role he's better suited for than a starter . . . GERALD GREEN will see solid minutes considering he can play both wing spots. The question is whether the vastly improved three-point shooting was for real . . . It's a developmental season for 20-year-old rookie TYLER ENNIS . . . ARCHIE GOODWIN will need to polish both his point-guard skills and his shooting. FORWARDS: MARKIEFF MORRIS was a highly effective stretch-4 with the second unit last season, and he could be in for a full-time role now that Channing Frye is gone . . . Retained as a free agent, P.J. TUCKER will continue to be a glue guy in the starting five . . . MARCUS MORRIS has fallen behind his twin brother in the rotation. He's more of a 'tweener who doesn't quite fit in that stretch-4 role . . . Rookie T.J. WARREN fits Hornacek's system and should have his way with opposing bench players. He's a below-the-rim, mid-range shooter with limited upside, but crafty enough to pile up points against second-unit talent. He'll miss the first two weeks of the season with a fractured thumb . . . ANTHONY TOLLIVER gives the Suns some depth at the 4-spot, and he fits the system with his long-range shooting. CENTERS: MILES PLUMLEE is the best option in an underwhelming rotation in the middle. He's an energy guy who does little else . . . He lost his rookie season, and ALEX LEN is still in the developmental stage. His upside is much higher than Plumlee's, and he might get minutes because of his screening and defensive mobility.

*Nuggets-Suns Preview* ======================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

Denver (7-7) at Phoenix (9-6), 9:00 p.m. EDT

The Denver Nuggets have overcome their sluggish start to the season and are on the verge of owning a winning record for the first time since opening night.

Another strong performance from Ty Lawson could help continue their surge and end a four-game slide against the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night in the opener of this home-and-home set.

Denver (7-7) began its season with an 89-79 win over Detroit, but then dropped seven of eight games while surrendering an average of 111.9 points.

Immensely improved defensive play has spurred the Nuggets' five-game winning streak, they've yielded just 99.4 points per game while limiting opponents to 41.5 percent shooting - 31.0 from beyond the arc.

It's their longest winning streak since a seven-game run from Nov. 21-Dec. 3, 2013.

Denver has also been offensively proficient, averaging 109.0 points during its current streak after Tuesday's 114-109 win over Chicago.

"Nobody likes to lose," Lawson said. "I feel like we had a late start ... but it feels good to get back in the mix and be playing for something."

Lawson is looking to build on his impressive performance from Tuesday after totaling 20 points, 12 assists and a season-high three steals. The guard leads the Nuggets with averages of 16.6 points and 9.8 assists, and he's managed 17.6 and 12.8, respectively, in the five victories.

Lawson is scoring 21.0 points per game while dishing out 8.8 assists in the past six road meetings with the Suns (9-6). A broken rib sidelined him in Denver's 112-107 overtime defeat at home against Phoenix on Feb. 18.

In addition to Lawson being available, Arron Afflalo has averaged 21.5 points while hitting 15 of 28 3-pointers and shooting 57.1 percent overall in his last eight overall games against the Suns.

Phoenix concluded a 4-2 trip with a 104-100 loss at Toronto, but found some solace in rallying from a 17-point, fourth-quarter deficit to briefly take the lead. The Suns hit 7 of 10 3s in the period, finishing with 14, and have shot 39 of 95 (41.1 percent) from beyond the arc their last three games.

"We can be down 20 points in the fourth quarter and can still win," said reserve forward P.J. Tucker, who had 11 points and eight rebounds while hitting 3 of 4 3-pointers. "There's no such thing as putting us away."

Eric Bledsoe had a season-high 25 points with seven rebounds, six assists, two steals and as many blocks against the Raptors. That came two days after he was held to nine points while missing 8 of 10 from the floor in a 106-83 romp of Indiana.

The guard has totaled 27 points and 12 assists in his last two meetings with Denver, but missed the most recent two with a sprained right knee.

Gerald Green picked up the slack in the February win, scoring 36 points while sinking 6 of 14 from 3-point range. The guard is averaging 15.3 points off the bench his last six games.
