KEY GAME INFORMATION
SAN ANTONIO: GUARDS: TONY PARKER may not be ageless, as he'll sit a handful of games during the regular season. But when the 32-year-old is on the court, he still gets into the lane whenever he wants . . . He can't do anything off the dribble, but DANNY GREEN is one of the league's elite spot-up shooters . . . MANU GINOBILI will need some regular-season maintenance as far as playing time goes, especially coming off a stress fracture in his leg. He's essential for the postseason . . . MARCO BELINELLI will have a significant role off the bench due to his ability to defend, shoot and do some ball-handling . . . It might be a lost regular season for NBA Finals star PATTY MILLS as he works his way back from shoulder surgery. He hopes to make his season debut in mid-January . . . CORY JOSEPH will pick up a few more minutes while Mills is out. FORWARDS: There's plenty of buzz surrounding KAWHI LEONARD after his Finals MVP performance, though it seems unlikely they'll make him the centerpiece of this offense as long as their vets are still going strong . . . Thirty-eight-year-old TIM DUNCAN is still one of the better power forwards in the league. Just like Parker and Ginobili, he'll take the occasional DNP-CD. His rebounding and shot-blocking rates continue to surge. The only real disappointment last season was that his FT shooting slid back towards his sub-70% career mark . . . JEFF AYRES is one of the new anonymous big men at the end of the San Antonio bench. He'll see a handful of starts when Gregg Popovich rests his star players . . . KYLE ANDERSON is too much of a defensive liability to see major minutes as a rookie, but his versatile skill set suggests he could be Boris Diaw's heir apparent . . . MATT BONNER will hoist some threes during the regular season. CENTERS: Popovich rotates his centers depending on the situation. TIAGO SPLITTER, the more traditional 5, will likely take the bulk of the minutes again . . . BORIS DIAW will play when the offense gets stagnant, especially when opponents go small.
PHOENIX: GUARDS: This is GORAN DRAGIC's team, and he'll continue to thrive in head coach Jeff Hornacek's up-tempo system . . . ERIC BLEDSOE's contract extension took longer than planned, but both sides are happy it's done. Durability is a concern, but he's an explosive scorer who can defend, and a fringe All-Star when he's healthy . . . They do have a logjam in the backcourt with ISAIAH THOMAS coming in. Thomas would likely become a high-energy sixth man, a role he's better suited for than a starter . . . GERALD GREEN will see solid minutes considering he can play both wing spots. The question is whether the vastly improved three-point shooting was for real . . . It's a developmental season for 20-year-old rookie TYLER ENNIS . . . ARCHIE GOODWIN will need to polish both his point-guard skills and his shooting. FORWARDS: MARKIEFF MORRIS was a highly effective stretch-4 with the second unit last season, and he could be in for a full-time role now that Channing Frye is gone . . . Retained as a free agent, P.J. TUCKER will continue to be a glue guy in the starting five . . . MARCUS MORRIS has fallen behind his twin brother in the rotation. He's more of a 'tweener who doesn't quite fit in that stretch-4 role . . . Rookie T.J. WARREN fits Hornacek's system and should have his way with opposing bench players. He's a below-the-rim, mid-range shooter with limited upside, but crafty enough to pile up points against second-unit talent. He'll miss the first two weeks of the season with a fractured thumb . . . ANTHONY TOLLIVER gives the Suns some depth at the 4-spot, and he fits the system with his long-range shooting. CENTERS: MILES PLUMLEE is the best option in an underwhelming rotation in the middle. He's an energy guy who does little else . . . He lost his rookie season, and ALEX LEN is still in the developmental stage. His upside is much higher than Plumlee's, and he might get minutes because of his screening and defensive mobility.

*Spurs-Suns Preview* ====================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

San Antonio (1-0) at Phoenix (1-0), 10:00 p.m. EDT

After missing the postseason despite winning 48 games, the Phoenix Suns know building on last season's drastic improvement may be necessary to push into the top eight in the Western Conference.

Beating more playoff teams would seem to be a good next step.

After showing promising signs in their opener against a lesser opponent, they'll face a tougher test Friday night as they take on their first playoff participant of 2014, the visiting San Antonio Spurs.

Phoenix went 11-18 against West playoff teams a season ago and missed out on the eighth seed by a game to Dallas. The Suns' 23-win improvement from 2012-13 was a league best, but it wasn't enough to put them in the postseason for the first time since 2009-10.

Phoenix routed the Los Angeles Lakers 119-99 at home Wednesday, shooting 54.9 percent and showing no signs of falling off their scoring pace of 2013-14, during which they averaged 108.1 points - third best in the league. They made 16 of 32 from 3-point range and topped their highest number of made 3s last season (15).

"That's what coach (Jeff Hornacek) wants us to do," point guard Isaiah Thomas said. "Play to our strengths, attack, be aggressive, score as early as possible and shoot a lot of 3s."

Thomas debuted for the Suns with a team-high 23 points on 9-of-11 shooting in just over 20 minutes off the bench. He went 5 of 7 from 3-point range.

Thomas adds depth to an up-tempo backcourt featuring Goran Dragic and a healthy Eric Bledsoe. Dragic had 18 points while the recently re-signed Bledsoe scored 16.

The Suns are 17-0 when Dragic and Bledsoe each score at least 16 points, which has never been the case against San Antonio. The four games in the series since Bledsoe was acquired from the Los Angeles Clippers before last season have seen the two players healthy together once.

Bledsoe, however, scored 30 points in the last meeting - a 112-104 Phoenix loss April 11. The Suns went 1-3 against San Antonio in 2013-14 and have dropped 16 of the past 21 matchups.

The Spurs are seeking a fourth straight 2-0 start after opening with a 101-100 home win over the Mavericks on Tuesday.

Any concerns about Manu Ginobili's uninspiring preseason were put to rest with a 20-point, six-assist performance.

"He was like zero for 50 in the preseason, and had like 19 turnovers per game, but tonight he was Manu Ginobili. He was unbelievable," coach Gregg Popovich said.

Tim Duncan had 14 points and 13 rebounds while Tony Parker scored a team-high 23, going 4 for 4 from beyond the arc. The veteran point guard has averaged 22.8 points and 57.1 percent shooting in his last four games against the Suns.

San Antonio went 14 of 28 from 3-point range against Dallas.

Tiago Splitter (calf), Kawhi Leonard (eye infection) and Patty Mills (shoulder) missed the opener, but Leonard is expected to play in this game.
