JOE JOHNSON won't have the ballin his hands as much as he used to in Atlanta. It might give him a chance to concentrate on regaining his stroke as one of the NBA's best shooters . . . MARSHON BROOKS will look to settle in as a high-scoring sixth man. He'll be trade bait for most of the season . . . After a disastrous year in Chicago, C.J. WATSON will be asked to spell Williams for a few minutes a night . . . KEITH BOGANS is still kicking around as a second unit glue guy . . . TYSHAWN TAYLOR is an at-times out-of-control combo guard, but the rookie could threaten Watson's role at some point. FORWARDS: KRIS HUMPHRIES' contract was structured to make him easier to trade. He'll rebound and get his put-backs, and the Nets will likely showcase him a bit . . . GERALD WALLACE is slowing down, and now that he's signed his last big NBA contract he might not have much incentive to live up to his 'Crash' nickname. Brooklyn has no choice but to give him heavy minutes considering their investment . . . MIRZA TELETOVIC is a veteran stretch four. Consider him a penniless man's Channing Frye . . . TORNIKE SHENGELIA played himself into a roster spot this summer. He's a mediocre athlete, but a cagey scorer with a high basketball IQ . . . JOSH CHILDRESS and JERRY STACKHOUSE were added in September for depth . . . REGGIE EVANS will flop unconvincingly, punch opponents in the jewels and bring other 'tough guy' intangibles. CENTERS: BROOK LOPEZ had been remarkably durable before last year's foot injury, and he should be fully healed by the start of training camp. He's gifted offensively, but will continue to grab relatively few rebounds and generally get fried defensively. He's also a candidate to be traded midseason if another franchise can stomach his max contract . . . As insurance, former Wizards big man ANDRAY BLATCHE was brought in. He could be the team's best interior defender, able to play either the four or five spot. | | PHOENIX: GUARDS: With Steve Nash gone, GORAN DRAGIC takes over at the point. He was a monster as a starter in Houston late last year, and he's familiar with Phoenix's system from his time there as Nash's backup . . . SHANNON BROWN is one of the league's better sixth men and could end up seeing close to starter minutes this year. Once just a raw athlete, he's made major strides as a shooter and ball-handler . . . KENDALL MARSHALL was a bit of a product of an absurdly talented supporting cast in college at UNC. He's got work to do to become an NBA-caliber starter, but he'll be capable enough as a backup point guard as a rookie . . . SEBASTIAN TELFAIR still can't hit an open jump shot, but will factor into the backcourt rotation. FORWARDS: LUIS SCOLA steps in as the starting four. While he's in his 30's and an underwhelming athlete, he's crafty and relentless . . . JARED DUDLEY will continue to be their main catch-and-shoot threat on the wing. It might take a while to develop an on-court chemistry with Dragic . . . MICHAEL BEASLEY has a chance to grab a starting spot. He rarely has his head on straight, but he can score . . . CHANNING FRYE, the sharp-shooting 7-footer, will likely miss the 2012-13 season due to an enlarged heart, but this condition is expected to completely heal . . . WESLEY JOHNSON gets a fresh start. He needs to start knocking down shots to land a rotation spot . . . MARKIEFF MORRIS showed flashes as a rookie, but has to make better decisions on the offensive end. He'll be a key on the second unit . . . Well-traveled P.J. TUCKER earned himself a roster spot with an impressive Summer League. CENTERS: MARCIN GORTAT had a great year-and-a-half alongside Steve Nash, and he'll have to prove he can create in the low post a little more. But he's a skilled big man who should pair nicely with Luis Scola as a scorer and passer in the post . . . Injury-riddled JERMAINE O'NEAL is still a strong low-post defender and shot-blocker. |

The Brooklyn Nets will try to bounce back from the first loss on their lengthy road trip by adding to the Phoenix Suns' recent woes.
The Nets will seek a third straight win over Phoenix on Sunday night while trying once again to cut their deficit in the Atlantic Division.
Brooklyn (40-29) won the first two of its eight straight road games by a combined 54 points before falling 101-95 to the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday. The Nets trailed by only two points with less than 25 seconds remaining but missed two of three shots from 3-point range.
"We needed a couple more free throws or a few less turnovers down the stretch," interim coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "We put ourselves in a position to win the game, and they just did a much better job closing it out than we did."
The loss was only Brooklyn's third in the past 10 away games and kept it two shy of matching the franchise's single-season record of 20 road victories, set in 2005-06. The Nets, winners in six of nine overall, would appear to have a good chance to move a step closer to that mark with a visit to the Suns (23-47).
Phoenix is 2-8 in its last 10 and has dropped back-to-back home games after winning four of six. The short-handed Suns were routed 117-86 by another lowly team, Minnesota, in their latest appearance at the U.S. Airways Center on Friday.
"This is an embarrassment," forward P.J. Tucker said. "There's no way we can play like that, with no energy."
Phoenix gave up 67 points in the first half while playing without Marcin Gortat (foot), Jermaine O'Neal (calf and flu) and Jared Dudley (illness). With Gortat and O'Neal missing, the Suns were forced to use 6-foot-9 Luis Scola as their starting center for the fifth time in nine games.
"Regardless of who's not here, this is an opportunity for some of our guys," coach Lindsey Hunter said. "You've got to take advantage of the opportunity to play and I don't think guys did that."
Brooklyn blew out the Suns 99-79 at home on Jan. 11 as Joe Johnson's 19 points led five players in double figures. The Nets could use another victory over Phoenix to help them cut into their 2 1/2-game deficit to the New York Knicks in the Atlantic.
Brooklyn had gotten that lead down to 1 1/2 before the Knicks won Saturday over Toronto.
The Nets have split their last four games in Phoenix after losing in 14 straight visits. They won 110-103 in their most recent game at U.S. Airways on Jan. 13, 2012, as Deron Williams had 35 points and 14 assists.
