|
| | | MINNESOTA: GUARDS: RICKY RUBIO could be back by late December, but even he's not confident his knee will be 100 percent. His minutes might have to be scaled back . . . LUKE RIDNOUR will handle the offense with Rubio hampered. The vet is a steady hand in coach Rick Adelman's Euro-style offense . . . They're counting on BRANDON ROY to reclaim his old form after a radical knee procedure. He may never be 100 percent, but he should at least give them sixth-man minutes . . . CHASE BUDINGER is a three-point marksman who moves well off the ball, a perfect fit in Adelman's system . . . J.J. BAREA will take some of the point guard burden as well. He's a top sixth man . . . ALEXEY SHVED can help as a combo guard, though he might have trouble breaking into this rotation . . . MALCOLM LEE is a defensive stopper who won't be asked to shoot very often. FORWARDS: Despite being limited athletically, KEVIN LOVE is an elite rebounder and shooter for a big. He'll continue to be the focal point of this offense once he returns from a broken hand in early December . . . ANDREI KIRILENKO returns to the States after a dominating Euroleague stint. He's a big upgrade at the three and should be comfortable in Adelman's system . . . DERRICK WILLIAMS will continue his attempted transition to the three. As last year proved, he's a long, long ways away. He might have to play himself into a rotation spot . . . DANTE CUNNINGHAM is a nice, efficient big to bring off the bench . . . Since they need shooting on the wings, rookie ROBBIE HUMMEL has a chance to crack the rotation. CENTERS: NIKOLA PEKOVIC is a beast, the best offensive rebounder in the NBA. His total rebounding numbers get hurt playing alongside Kevin Love, but Pekovic will continue to bully his way to put-backs . . . GREG STIEMSMA is going to come in and do some pushing and shoving (and occasional shot-blocking) for 12-to-15 MPG. | | PHOENIX: GUARDS: With Steve Nash gone, GORAN DRAGIC takes over at the point. He was a monster as a starter in Houston late last year, and he's familiar with Phoenix's system from his time there as Nash's backup . . . SHANNON BROWN is one of the league's better sixth men and could end up seeing close to starter minutes this year. Once just a raw athlete, he's made major strides as a shooter and ball-handler . . . KENDALL MARSHALL was a bit of a product of an absurdly talented supporting cast in college at UNC. He's got work to do to become an NBA-caliber starter, but he'll be capable enough as a backup point guard as a rookie . . . SEBASTIAN TELFAIR still can't hit an open jump shot, but will factor into the backcourt rotation. FORWARDS: LUIS SCOLA steps in as the starting four. While he's in his 30's and an underwhelming athlete, he's crafty and relentless . . . JARED DUDLEY will continue to be their main catch-and-shoot threat on the wing. It might take a while to develop an on-court chemistry with Dragic . . . MICHAEL BEASLEY has a chance to grab a starting spot. He rarely has his head on straight, but he can score . . . CHANNING FRYE, the sharp-shooting 7-footer, will likely miss the 2012-13 season due to an enlarged heart, but this condition is expected to completely heal . . . WESLEY JOHNSON gets a fresh start. He needs to start knocking down shots to land a rotation spot . . . MARKIEFF MORRIS showed flashes as a rookie, but has to make better decisions on the offensive end. He'll be a key on the second unit . . . Well-traveled P.J. TUCKER earned himself a roster spot with an impressive Summer League. CENTERS: MARCIN GORTAT had a great year-and-a-half alongside Steve Nash, and he'll have to prove he can create in the low post a little more. But he's a skilled big man who should pair nicely with Luis Scola as a scorer and passer in the post . . . Injury-riddled JERMAINE O'NEAL is still a strong low-post defender and shot-blocker. |

*Timberwolves-Suns Preview* ===========================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Minnesota (20-33) at Phoenix (18-39), 9:00 p.m. EDT
The Minnesota Timberwolves and Phoenix Suns each won in their return from the All-Star break, but neither team has gotten back into the win column since.
One of the two last-place clubs will change that Tuesday night when they meet in Phoenix.
Minnesota (20-33) fended off Philadelphia 94-87 on Wednesday, but then allowed Oklahoma City and Golden State to reach the century mark in back-to-back losses.
The Timberwolves couldn't get enough stops late in the fourth quarter Sunday against the Warriors. They led by six with 6:20 remaining but were outscored 15-8 down the stretch in a 100-99 defeat.
Former Arizona star Derrick Williams had 23 points - one shy of matching a season high - and 12 rebounds in the defeat, and Nikola Pekovic scored 21.
"We played well and gave ourselves a great chance to win. We just couldn't finish it," coach Rick Adelman said. "These are things we've got to learn from."
The Western Conference-worst Suns (18-39) have lost three in a row since a 102-98 win at Portland last Tuesday, falling 97-87 Sunday to San Antonio to match a season high with a fourth consecutive home defeat.
Phoenix trailed by as many as 21 in the fourth quarter of that game before making the final score a little more respectable. Marcin Gortat had 21 points and 12 rebounds, but was the only Suns player to make more than three field goals against the league's leading team.
"We just have to be smarter and just continue to get better execution-wise at both ends of the floor," interim coach Lindsey Hunter said. "We'll continue to chip away at getting better."
Minnesota came out on top 111-107 despite Luis Scola's season-high 33 points when these teams met at the Target Center on Dec. 29. With 28 points, Pekovic was one of three Timberwolves players to score at least 20, but one of those will not play Tuesday.
Kevin Love, who had 23 points and 18 rebounds in that win, is hoping to return from a fractured right hand in time to play the final 15 to 20 games this season. The Timberwolves will try to make up for his absence while earning back-to-back wins over Phoenix for the first time in more than eight years.
Minnesota won five straight in the series from Dec. 3, 2003-Dec. 3, 2004, then lost 20 of the next 25 matchups before prevailing in two of the past three. The Timberwolves snapped a nine-game skid to the Suns and a five-game losing streak in Phoenix with a 127-124 victory in their most recent visit March 12.
Love's 30 points led six Minnesota players in double figures in that win. Pekovic had 24 and Williams scored 19 off the bench on 7-of-10 shooting.
Jared Dudley scored a season-high 28 points for Phoenix and is averaging 22.0 on 63.4 percent shooting in his last three home games against Minnesota.
The Timberwolves are beginning a three-game trip having dropped 13 of their last 15 on the road, including six in a row at West foes.
