| | | SAN ANTONIO: GUARDS: TONY PARKER played at an MVP level last year. His eye injury is obviously not an issue, and he was constantly getting on coach Gregg Popovich to let him finish meaningless games last year. There's no reason he can't repeat last year's performance . . . MANU GINOBILI dealt with a series of nagging injuries last year, and it's clear the team will have to monitor his regular-season workload . . . GARY NEAL provides solid minutes in this rotation, mostly at the point, and is able to consistently knock down threes . . . DANNY GREEN's rotation spot is in a bit of peril. He was too much of an offensive liability in last year's Western Conference Finals . . . NANDO de COLO is a combo guard who can provide instant offense off the bench. He can shoot it and does a nice job getting to the line . . . PATTY MILLS steps in as another viable option in this loaded backcourt . . . CORY JOSEPH's roster spot is in jeopardy after a middling D-League season. FORWARDS: TIM DUNCAN will continue to save it up for the playoffs. He still has plenty left in the tank, but he'll get tons of rest in March and April and more and more often defers to Tony Parker on offense when he does play . . . There's plenty to like about KAWHI LEONARD, who proved to be useful on both ends of the court last season. He'll be asked to be a little more aggressive offensively this year and should even have a couple of sets designed for him . . . STEPHEN JACKSON was a bit of a disaster in Milwaukee before landing with the Spurs last year. He's another veteran who will be paced during the regular season. And while he's been a facilitator in the past, he's really just a catch-and-shoot guy in San Antonio . . . MATT BONNER will continue to come off the bench and hoist some threes. CENTERS: BORIS DIAW's pick-and-pop ability makes him Popovich's top choice in the center rotation . . . TIAGO SPLITTER looks to be a career second-unit guy. He works hard and can defend, but he's just too clunky on the offensive end . . . DeJUAN BLAIR can pick up some cheap baskets, but his lack of offensive skills and defensive size makes him a fringe rotation player. | | PHOENIX: GUARDS: With Steve Nash gone, GORAN DRAGIC takes over at the point. He was a monster as a starter in Houston late last year, and he's familiar with Phoenix's system from his time there as Nash's backup . . . SHANNON BROWN is one of the league's better sixth men and could end up seeing close to starter minutes this year. Once just a raw athlete, he's made major strides as a shooter and ball-handler . . . KENDALL MARSHALL was a bit of a product of an absurdly talented supporting cast in college at UNC. He's got work to do to become an NBA-caliber starter, but he'll be capable enough as a backup point guard as a rookie . . . SEBASTIAN TELFAIR still can't hit an open jump shot, but will factor into the backcourt rotation. FORWARDS: LUIS SCOLA steps in as the starting four. While he's in his 30's and an underwhelming athlete, he's crafty and relentless . . . JARED DUDLEY will continue to be their main catch-and-shoot threat on the wing. It might take a while to develop an on-court chemistry with Dragic . . . MICHAEL BEASLEY has a chance to grab a starting spot. He rarely has his head on straight, but he can score . . . CHANNING FRYE, the sharp-shooting 7-footer, will likely miss the 2012-13 season due to an enlarged heart, but this condition is expected to completely heal . . . WESLEY JOHNSON gets a fresh start. He needs to start knocking down shots to land a rotation spot . . . MARKIEFF MORRIS showed flashes as a rookie, but has to make better decisions on the offensive end. He'll be a key on the second unit . . . Well-traveled P.J. TUCKER earned himself a roster spot with an impressive Summer League. CENTERS: MARCIN GORTAT had a great year-and-a-half alongside Steve Nash, and he'll have to prove he can create in the low post a little more. But he's a skilled big man who should pair nicely with Luis Scola as a scorer and passer in the post . . . Injury-riddled JERMAINE O'NEAL is still a strong low-post defender and shot-blocker. |

*Spurs-Suns Preview* ====================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
San Antonio (44-13) at Phoenix (18-38), 8:00 p.m. EDT
The San Antonio Spurs are poised not to look past the finale of their already successful season-high road stretch and on to an extended stay at home - particularly without Tony Parker.
Hoping to bounce back from their second loss in more than a month Sunday, the NBA-leading Spurs will be short-handed as they try for a sixth straight victory over the lowly Phoenix Suns in their first of consecutive meetings with the Western Conference's last-place team.
With the rodeo in town, San Antonio (44-13) is 6-2 on a road stretch that was broken up by the All-Star break. Before the Spurs can think about playing 13 of 15 at home following the trip, they head to Phoenix trying to rebound from Friday's 107-101 overtime loss at Golden State that snapped a five-game winning streak.
Danny Green had 20 points while Tim Duncan added 19 with 13 rebounds, but the Spurs shot 38.9 percent, including 4 of 22 (18.2 percent) from 3-point range. They blew a 13-point fourth quarter lead en route to their second defeat in 18 games.
"Move forward, re-focus, it's big one in Phoenix," said Parker, who had 18 points. "We want to finish on a good note before we go back home. If we win in Phoenix, it will be a very nice road (stretch). ... Let's not get ahead of ourselves."
Parker, as it turns out, was getting ahead of himself. The West's reigning player of the month will miss his fourth game this season due to a right triceps contusion, though it's unclear if he suffered the injury in Friday night's game or in practice Saturday.
Parker had 31 points and seven assists versus Phoenix in a 108-99 win Jan. 26, the Spurs' fifth straight in the series.
Phoenix (18-38), which opens San Antonio's home stretch Wednesday after hosting Minnesota the night before, has lost two straight and six of seven overall. The Spurs, however, won't take anything for granted - especially with Parker out.
Nando De Colo will start in Parker's place, while reserve Gary Neal (calf) may also be sidelined.
"Hopefully we go out and have a good game and don't start thinking the road trip is over before it is," said Manu Ginobili, who scored 20 against the Suns last month. "We have to be pros and be responsible."
Phoenix did not look much like a professional team during Friday's 113-88 loss to Boston. Minus stars Rajon Rondo and Kevin Garnett, the Celtics raced out to a 13-0 lead and shot 55.7 percent - the best against the Suns at home this season.
"This is one you just want to put behind you as fast as possible," Suns forward P.J. Tucker said.
Phoenix coach Lindsey Hunter wants to make sure there will not be a repeat performance.
"I guarantee you we're going to change or we're going to practice until they kick us out of the gym, because that puts a bad taste in my mouth," he said. "One of their Hall of Fame players didn't play and they still come in here and smack you around like a punching bag. You're at home and there is no resistance.
"That is just not who I am and that is not who this team will be. Whatever we have to do, whatever method, it will be done."
Hunter likely can't fault the effort of guard Goran Dragic, who is averaging 18.3 points and 12.7 assists in the last three games. He had 10 assists at San Antonio last month, but has averaged 8.2 points in the five games against the Spurs since the start of last season.
