| | | DALLAS: GUARDS: DARREN COLLISON's jump shot might be shaky, but he can get into the lane at will. He'll be a much different look than Jason Kidd had been in Big D . . . O.J. MAYO becomes the second option in this offense. He'll have the ball in his hands a lot . . . VINCE CARTER will come off the bench. At this point, he's a three-point specialist, and not a very good one . . . DELONTE WEST will back up both guard spots. Don't be surprised if he overtakes Collison at some point . . . RODDY BEAUBOIS can heat up in an instant, but he has work to do to make this rotation . . . DAHNTAY JONES is roster filler . . . DOMINIQUE JONES enters the year on the roster bubble . . . JARED CUNNINGHAM will learn the point guard position watching from the bench as a rookie. FORWARDS: After a slow start last season, DIRK NOWITZKI looked like the Dirk of old in the second half of the year. He's still got something left in the tank, but it's still unclear if the swelling in his knee will require surgery, something that would shelve him for more than a month . . . SHAWN MARION is still an important cog in Carlisle's creative defensive gameplans, so he'll keep playing big minutes despite his dwindling offensive skills . . . ELTON BRAND is still relevant, even behind Nowitzki, because of his ability to play some center . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT will be in and out of the rotation again, but he's now relatively healthy and showed signs of being a serviceable rotation player a year ago . . . Rookie Jae CROWDER profiles as a potentially solid second-unit player, but he'll be buried on this depth chart. CENTERS: CHRIS KAMAN gives Dallas some offensive skill at center, but he's not exactly the defensive presence they've needed. He'll log the bulk of the minutes here, but there are going to be a handful of games where the Mavs have to sit him and go small for defensive purposes . . . 27-year-old rookie BERNARD JAMES could fill Ian Mahinmi's old role of a shot-blocker/fouler off the bench.
| | PHOENIX: GUARDS: With Steve Nash gone, GORAN DRAGIC takes over at the point. He was a monster as a starter in Houston late last year, and he's familiar with Phoenix's system from his time there as Nash's backup . . . SHANNON BROWN is one of the league's better sixth men and could end up seeing close to starter minutes this year. Once just a raw athlete, he's made major strides as a shooter and ball-handler . . . KENDALL MARSHALL was a bit of a product of an absurdly talented supporting cast in college at UNC. He's got work to do to become an NBA-caliber starter, but he'll be capable enough as a backup point guard as a rookie . . . SEBASTIAN TELFAIR still can't hit an open jump shot, but will factor into the backcourt rotation. FORWARDS: LUIS SCOLA steps in as the starting four. While he's in his 30's and an underwhelming athlete, he's crafty and relentless . . . JARED DUDLEY will continue to be their main catch-and-shoot threat on the wing. It might take a while to develop an on-court chemistry with Dragic . . . MICHAEL BEASLEY has a chance to grab a starting spot. He rarely has his head on straight, but he can score . . . CHANNING FRYE, the sharp-shooting 7-footer, will likely miss the 2012-13 season due to an enlarged heart, but this condition is expected to completely heal . . . WESLEY JOHNSON gets a fresh start. He needs to start knocking down shots to land a rotation spot . . . MARKIEFF MORRIS showed flashes as a rookie, but has to make better decisions on the offensive end. He'll be a key on the second unit . . . Well-traveled P.J. TUCKER earned himself a roster spot with an impressive Summer League. CENTERS: MARCIN GORTAT had a great year-and-a-half alongside Steve Nash, and he'll have to prove he can create in the low post a little more. But he's a skilled big man who should pair nicely with Luis Scola as a scorer and passer in the post . . . Injury-riddled JERMAINE O'NEAL is still a strong low-post defender and shot-blocker. |

*Mavericks-Suns Preview* ========================
By MATT BEARDMORE STATS Writer
Dallas (8-10) at Phoenix (7-12), 10:30 p.m. EDT
The Phoenix Suns are so confident in what team president Jason Rowley calls their "exciting brand of basketball" that the team is offering fans their money back - regardless of the game's outcome - if they're not completely satisfied with the experience at Thursday night's matchup against the Dallas Mavericks.
The way the Suns are playing, that could end up being quite a costly promotion.
Back from its longest trip of the season, Phoenix will try to avoid its first five-game losing streak in nearly 11 months as it begins a stretch of six of seven at home.
Whether it's to generate some excitement in the desert for the new-look Suns, fill the US Airways Center for a nationally televised game, or both, the team's "Satisfaction Guaranteed Night" comes at a time when Phoenix (7-12) isn't satisfied at all with its play.
The team ended a 1-5 trip with Tuesday's 108-98 overtime loss to Memphis, a game the Suns led by as many as 16 in the second quarter.
"We played good for three quarters," said center Marcin Gortat, who led Phoenix with 18.5 points and 12.3 rebounds per game as it dropped three of four to Dallas last season. "Quite honestly, something just suddenly turned off. Someone turned off the switch, and we just stopped playing. That's it."
The Suns can't afford any more defensive letdowns, as they're allowing 108.0 points per game during their skid and a league-worst 102.9 for the season.
Phoenix last lost five in a row Jan. 10-17.
"They're gonna be desperate for a win," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle told the team's official website.
Dallas (8-10) is also looking to get back into the win column after getting routed 112-90 by the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday to kick off its three-game trip.
The Mavs have dropped four of five, with three of those losses coming by at least 22 points.
"Turnovers basically triggered all the problems tonight," Carlisle told the league's official website after his team's season high-tying 22 turnovers led to 26 Clippers points.
Trying to avoid a fourth consecutive road loss - and falling three games below .500 for the first time since the start of 2011-12 - Dallas will still be without Dirk Nowitzki.
The former MVP is traveling with the Mavs, but he said during Wednesday's game his debut following offseason knee surgery is still "a few weeks out."
Dallas is hoping the recent addition of point guard Derek Fisher will add some veteran leadership and scoring punch until Nowitzki returns. Fisher hit three 3-pointers and scored 15 points Wednesday after going 1 for 8 with two points in his season debut Saturday against Detroit.
"I'm just looking forward to be as helpful as possible with this team," Fisher said. "There's a lot of young guys, but we do have some potential."
Suns point guard Goran Dragic, the team leader with 15.5 points and 6.6 assists per game, could play a key role in turning Phoenix's season in the right direction. He averaged 20.3 points and 8.3 assists in three games versus Dallas last season while with Houston.
Phoenix forward Luis Scola totaled 59 points and 20 rebounds in those contests for the Rockets.
The Suns avoided the season sweep and ended an eight-game skid in this series with a 96-94 victory in Dallas' last visit on March 8.
The Mavericks had won their previous three in Phoenix.
