|
| | | ATLANTA: GUARDS: Considering he was almost gone a year ago, the Hawks are thankful JEFF TEAGUE is still in town. He may never be a great shooter, but he gets wherever he wants on the floor . . . KYLE KORVER is still the NBA's premier shooter, and he's shown no signs of relinquishing that title . . . THABO SEFOLOSHA gives the Hawks a defensive option to complement Korver. He looked worn down last season though, eventually falling out of OKC's rotation . . . KENT BAZEMORE gives Atlanta some more offensive firepower off the bench . . . DENNIS SCHRODER showed flashes of that Rajon Rondo Lite promise last year. Don't be surprised to see him paired with Teague in some lineups . . . There's no guarantee JOHN JENKINS will ever be the same after back surgery. FORWARDS: PAUL MILLSAP has developed into a capable co-alpha, along with Jeff Teague. In addition to his low-post work, he's developed a three-point shot and the ability to work off the dribble . . . DeMARRE CARROLL is trying to add a three-point shot to his repertoire. It would give him a big boost in offensive value to go along with his defense and all-around hustle . . . ADREIAN PAYNE will provide some much-needed depth at the 4 and 5 spots. He's NBA-ready, especially with his ability to pull opposing big men away from the basket with his shooting . . . MIKE MUSCALA gives them another big man who can shoot it, but he's not athletic enough to hold his own in the NBA. CENTERS: Will AL HORFORD ever stay healthy? He's an All-Star when he is. His recent injuries have been a bit fluky, but it's going to be tough to trust him . . . PERO ANTIC proved to be a capable stretch-5 last year, but the arrival of Payne will likely push him out of the rotation. | | PHILADELPHIA: GUARDS: MICHAEL CARTER-WILLIAMS wasn't the most legit Rookie of the Year, but he had his moments. He should be a little more efficient in his second season, and Philly certainly doesn't have a better alternative at the point. A shoulder injury will likely keep him sidelined for the first three weeks of the upcoming season . . . TONY WROTEN makes some highlight-reel plays and will likely start at the 2. He's too erratic to be in the rotation for a playoff team . . . As for the rest of the backcourt, ELLIOT WILLIAMS is looking to revive his career, and he's no worse than James Anderson and Hollis Thompson, who were starting for this team last season . . . Injuries have all but ended JASON RICHARDSON's career. He's on the final year of his deal, and might not play in 2014-15 after suffering a stress fracture to his right foot in late October . . . ALEXEY SHVED could play some quality minutes at both guard spots for this team. FORWARDS: The 2014 draft was deep, allowing Philly to land a first-round value in second-rounder K.J. McDANIELS. He's certainly better than anyone the Sixers trotted out at the 3-spot last season . . . HOLLIS THOMPSON could keep a starting job warm again . . . Another second-rounder, JERAMI GRANT, could play his way into the rotation. He's talented, but he's also something of a 'tweener, and like most Syracuse guys sitting in a 2-3 zone, Grant never learned how to e-on-one defense . . . ARNETT MOULTRIE has been something of a problem child in Philly, but he's good enough to make this rotation if he turns it around effort-wise . . . LUC RICHARD MBAH a MOUTE is here as a mentor for Joel Embiid. CENTERS: NERLENS NOEL is ready to make his debut. His collegiate rates suggest he'll rebound and block shots. The question marks are durability, functional strength and offensive game. He'll get to learn on the fly . . . JOEL EMBIID's foot problems will keep him out until at least midseason, and the Sixers will certainly play it safe with him. On raw talent, he's a future star. The questions are durability, and whether he can co-exist with Noel. |

*Hawks-76ers Preview* =====================
By JOHN KOSIK STATS Editor
Atlanta (49-12) at Philadelphia (13-49), 7:30 p.m. EDT
After picking up back-to-back home wins over top-shelf teams, the competition drops off significantly for the Atlanta Hawks over their next six games.
With a majority of their next two weeks being spent on the road, the Hawks look to get the stretch off to a solid start and reach the 50-win plateau for the first time in five years by completing another season sweep of the Philadelphia 76ers.
Since suffering a two-game skid that bridged the All-Star break, Atlanta (49-12) has won six in a row, including victories over Houston and Cleveland that have left the Hawks on the verge of reaching 50 wins for the first time since going 53-29 in 2009-10.
The Hawks' 104-96 victory Tuesday gave them a season sweep of the Rockets before Friday's 106-97 win marked their third straight over the Cavaliers since a 127-94 loss in Cleveland on Nov. 15 that remains their biggest defeat this season.
After five players scored in double figures for the balanced Hawks on Tuesday, Al Horford had 19 points to lead six such efforts against the Cavs, who shot 42.0 percent - including a 5-for-13 performance by LeBron James.
"I wanted to be a gnat," forward DeMarre Carroll said after pestering James all night while scoring 11 points. "You know, when you're outside in the summer, and you can't get that gnat away from you."
Coupled with Chicago's loss to Indiana, the victory moved Atlanta 11 games ahead of the second-place Bulls in the Eastern Conference.
"This was an important win," said reserve point guard Dennis Schroder, who scored 15 points. "That's a great team we were playing tonight."
Now that they've protected their home court in two tough matchups, the Hawks need to get things going on the road after splitting their last six there. The good news is that the 76ers (13-49) mark the first of five sub-.500 matchups over their next six contests.
Atlanta faces only one team - Phoenix - in that time that currently has a winning record. The Hawks return home to play Sacramento on Monday before opening a season-high six-game trip Wednesday against Denver.
They'll also visit the Los Angeles Lakers and Kings before a showdown at West-leading Golden State on March 18.
There's no reason to think Atlanta won't continue rolling against Philadelphia, which has dropped the last seven meetings.
The Hawks have won the first three this season by an average of 13.3 points, including a 105-87 victory Jan. 13 in their previous visit to Wells Fargo Center. The Hawks, who haven't lost to the 76ers since a home defeat April 5, 2013, have won their last three in Philadelphia by at least 18 points.
The 76ers dropped their ninth in 10 games with an 89-83 home loss to Utah on Friday. Philadelphia limited the Jazz to 38.0 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers - including 13 steals - but hit nine free throws to Utah's 29.
"As a team, I thought that there was something just a little bit flat tonight," coach Brett Brown said.
Isaiah Canaan scored 16 points and Thomas Robinson added 11 points and 12 rebounds for Philadelphia, which opened a five-game homestand and is one game ahead of New York for the league's worst record.
The 76ers are 4-12 in the second game of back-to-back sets, while the Hawks have gone 11-3.
