KEY GAME INFORMATION
WASHINGTON: GUARDS: JOHN WALL has improved tremendously over the past two seasons. His physical skills are off the chart, and now he's significantly cut back on head-scratching mistakes . . . It appears that BRADLEY BEAL is becoming the perfect running mate for Wall in the short and the long term. He continues to develop off-the-dribble skills to go along with his shooting. His broken wrist is expected to fully heal by late November . . . ANDRE MILLER is in more of a mentor role in Washington. He's 38 and averaged less than 17 minutes per night last season . . . GLEN RICE JR. tore up Summer League, but it's unlikely the gunner will become an efficient scorer . . . GARRETT TEMPLE gives them a defense-first option off the bench, but his playing time will be minimal again. FORWARDS: PAUL PIERCE takes Trevor Ariza's spot at the 3. He'll have much more space to work in, not that he's ever needed it . . . The Wizards will likely play it safe with NENE HILARIO's minutes during the regular season again. They'll need him fresh for the playoffs, and they have enough frontcourt depth to do it . . . Back surgery is going to keep MARTELL WEBSTER out for a huge chunk of the season. He's a question mark even after he returns . . . After a lost rookie season, OTTO PORTER should be able to break into this rotation, especially with Webster out . . . KRIS HUMPHRIES will provide some rebounding and energy behind Nen' . . . It's incredible that DREW GOODEN is still employed. CENTERS: MARCIN GORTAT made beautiful pick-and-roll music with Wall last year. There's no reason that shouldn't continue. Gortat is a fringe All-Star . . . DeJUAN BLAIR can mix it up for 20 minutes per night, especially against smaller 5's.
PHILADELPHIA: GUARDS: MICHAEL CARTER-WILLIAMS wasn't the most legit Rookie of the Year, but he had his moments. He should be a little more efficient in his second season, and Philly certainly doesn't have a better alternative at the point. A shoulder injury will likely keep him sidelined for the first three weeks of the upcoming season . . . TONY WROTEN makes some highlight-reel plays and will likely start at the 2. He's too erratic to be in the rotation for a playoff team . . . As for the rest of the backcourt, ELLIOT WILLIAMS is looking to revive his career, and he's no worse than James Anderson and Hollis Thompson, who were starting for this team last season . . . Injuries have all but ended JASON RICHARDSON's career. He's on the final year of his deal, and might not play in 2014-15 after suffering a stress fracture to his right foot in late October . . . ALEXEY SHVED could play some quality minutes at both guard spots for this team. FORWARDS: The 2014 draft was deep, allowing Philly to land a first-round value in second-rounder K.J. McDANIELS. He's certainly better than anyone the Sixers trotted out at the 3-spot last season . . . HOLLIS THOMPSON could keep a starting job warm again . . . Another second-rounder, JERAMI GRANT, could play his way into the rotation. He's talented, but he's also something of a 'tweener, and like most Syracuse guys sitting in a 2-3 zone, Grant never learned how to e-on-one defense . . . ARNETT MOULTRIE has been something of a problem child in Philly, but he's good enough to make this rotation if he turns it around effort-wise . . . LUC RICHARD MBAH a MOUTE is here as a mentor for Joel Embiid. CENTERS: NERLENS NOEL is ready to make his debut. His collegiate rates suggest he'll rebound and block shots. The question marks are durability, functional strength and offensive game. He'll get to learn on the fly . . . JOEL EMBIID's foot problems will keep him out until at least midseason, and the Sixers will certainly play it safe with him. On raw talent, he's a future star. The questions are durability, and whether he can co-exist with Noel.

*Wizards-76ers Preview* =======================

By JACK CASSIDY STATS Writer

Washington (33-25) at Philadelphia (12-45), 7:00 p.m. EDT

Rather than breaking their slump with an easy victory over one of the NBA's worst teams, the Washington Wizards hit a new low.

They would do it again by losing Friday night.

Following an embarrassing loss, the visiting Wizards hope to avoid another one with Bradley Beal likely to return against the lifeless Philadelphia 76ers.

Washington (33-25) has lost five in a row and 10 of 12 after perhaps its weakest effort of the season Wednesday. The Wizards recorded their lowest point total in more than a year and shot 37.9 percent - their worst effort of 2015 - in a 97-77 defeat at Minnesota.

That defeat to the Western Conference's worst team marked the third time in four games Washington lost by at least 17 points.

"It's tough times right now. Tough times," coach Randy Wittman said. "It's easy to look at it like that and put your head down, but we have to fight through it."

John Wall finished with a season-low five points for the Wizards, who were without both Beal and Paul Pierce.

Pierce's status for Friday is uncertain after the veteran was scratched just prior to Wednesday's loss with a bruised knee. He scored a team-high 25 in Tuesday's loss to Golden State.

Beal reportedly expects to play after sitting out seven games with a stress reaction in his right leg. Washington's top 3-point shooter at 43.6 percent and 1.8 made per game, Beal could provide a significant boost to a Wizards team hitting 23.3 percent from beyond the arc during its five-game losing streak.

"It's tough. It's the adversity we have to go through as a team," said Wall, who has missed 18 of his last 21 3-point attempts. "It's definitely tough when you're not making shots and when you're not spacing. We have to do other things to win games."

The Wizards' 2-10 stretch has dropped them from second place in the East to fifth, 12 1/2 games behind Southeast Division leader Atlanta. Washington has not lost six consecutive games since April 7-17, 2013.

Matching that streak Friday would still have to be considered a surprise.

Besides Washington having trounced the 76ers 111-76 on Jan. 19 in the only meeting this season, Philadelphia (12-45) owns the NBA's second-worst record and hasn't defeated anyone since trading away reigning Rookie of the Year Michael Carter-Williams. The 76ers are 0-4 since that deadline deal last week and have lost five straight overall.

Jason Richardson, in his third game after sitting out about two full seasons due to knee problems, led the team with 16 points in a 104-88 loss to Milwaukee on Wednesday. With three other players acquired Feb. 19 or later receiving significant minutes - Isaiah Canaan, Ish Smith and Thomas Robinson - the 76ers matched a season high with 28 turnovers.

"You get a bunch of new guys crashing into each other, and you turn it over," coach Brett Brown said. "It's an extraordinary amount of turnovers."

The Wizards have won the last four meetings with the 76ers, who score a league-low 90.4 points per game. Washington has surrendered an average of 111.0 since the All-Star break.
