KEY GAME INFORMATION
MINNESOTA: GUARDS: RICKY RUBIO is a fine ball-handler and creative passer, but it would be nice if he knocked down some shots . . . The Wolves are still trying to move KEVIN MARTIN's contract. He has devolved into more of a spot-up shooter . . . ANDREW WIGGINS should immediately contribute for this team. He'll be an elite defender, sooner rather than later, and should be able to produce points as well . . . Shoot-first combo guard MO WILLIAMS will head up the second unit . . . J.J. BAREA is also likely to be moved. He can still do the Mighty Mouse, sixth-man thing . . . On paper, CHASE BUDINGER is a great fit alongside Rubio due to his shooting and movement off the ball. He has to stay healthy though . . . Head coach Flip Saunders is high on ZACH LaVINE, a pure athlete who didn't do much of anything as a freshman at UCLA. FORWARDS: THADDEUS YOUNG is now the best player in this Timberwolves frontcourt. He'll lead the team in scoring and eats up rebounds as well . . . ANTHONY BENNETT should play some significant minutes with this team. He's a good scorer and will try to prove that he was just not ready to come into a bad situation last season . . . COREY BREWER has established himself as a solid defender on the wing who can knock down some threes and run the floor well . . . GLENN ROBINSON III should earn immediate minutes due to his defense . . . SHABAZZ MUHAMMAD gets new life with a new coaching regime coming in. He could be a crafty second-unit scorer . . . RONNY TURIAF is a big body who can protect the rim. CENTERS: NIKOLA PEKOVIC is a big part of this offense without needing plays designed for him. He's arguably the top offensive rebounder in the NBA . . . GORGUI DIENG impressed late last season and should be ready for a bigger role. He and Pekovic might be in a timeshare by the season's second half.
PHILADELPHIA: GUARDS: MICHAEL CARTER-WILLIAMS wasn't the most legit Rookie of the Year, but he had his moments. He should be a little more efficient in his second season, and Philly certainly doesn't have a better alternative at the point. A shoulder injury will likely keep him sidelined for the first three weeks of the upcoming season . . . TONY WROTEN makes some highlight-reel plays and will likely start at the 2. He's too erratic to be in the rotation for a playoff team . . . As for the rest of the backcourt, ELLIOT WILLIAMS is looking to revive his career, and he's no worse than James Anderson and Hollis Thompson, who were starting for this team last season . . . Injuries have all but ended JASON RICHARDSON's career. He's on the final year of his deal, and might not play in 2014-15 after suffering a stress fracture to his right foot in late October . . . ALEXEY SHVED could play some quality minutes at both guard spots for this team. FORWARDS: The 2014 draft was deep, allowing Philly to land a first-round value in second-rounder K.J. McDANIELS. He's certainly better than anyone the Sixers trotted out at the 3-spot last season . . . HOLLIS THOMPSON could keep a starting job warm again . . . Another second-rounder, JERAMI GRANT, could play his way into the rotation. He's talented, but he's also something of a 'tweener, and like most Syracuse guys sitting in a 2-3 zone, Grant never learned how to e-on-one defense . . . ARNETT MOULTRIE has been something of a problem child in Philly, but he's good enough to make this rotation if he turns it around effort-wise . . . LUC RICHARD MBAH a MOUTE is here as a mentor for Joel Embiid. CENTERS: NERLENS NOEL is ready to make his debut. His collegiate rates suggest he'll rebound and block shots. The question marks are durability, functional strength and offensive game. He'll get to learn on the fly . . . JOEL EMBIID's foot problems will keep him out until at least midseason, and the Sixers will certainly play it safe with him. On raw talent, he's a future star. The questions are durability, and whether he can co-exist with Noel.

*Timberwolves-76ers Preview* ============================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Minnesota (8-37) at Philadelphia (9-37), 7:00 p.m. EDT

After developing into a productive forward in seven seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers, Thaddeus Young has given the oft-depleted Minnesota Timberwolves a reliable presence in the lineup.

Making his first trip back to Philadelphia, Young will try to extend his best stretch of the season away from home Friday night when the NBA-worst Wolves seek their first back-to-back victories.

Young, selected 12th overall by Philadelphia in 2007, averaged double-digit points in six straight seasons and emerged as the 76ers' leading scorer in 2013-14 with a career-best 17.9 per game.

That made Young an attractive piece in the August three-team trade that sent him to Minnesota and Kevin Love to Cleveland. The Wolves also acquired 2014 top pick Andrew Wiggins and 2013 first overall pick Anthony Bennett from the Cavaliers.

Ricky Rubio, Kevin Martin and Nikola Pekovic have sat out extended periods due to injury, but Young hasn't missed a game since Nov. 22 and his 40 starts are second only to Wiggins' 45.

He's scored 18.4 per game in his last seven since averaging 13.3 over his first 33. However, he's looking to get back on track after finishing with 12 on 3-of-11 shooting in Wednesday's 110-98 home win over Boston.

Young has been at his best on the road of late, averaging 22.0 points on 50.7 percent shooting in his last four games.

Wiggins, tops on Minnesota with 15.1 points per game, has scored 13 or less in four of his last six after averaging 21.4 over the previous 13.

The Timberwolves (8-37) have Martin and Pekovic back, while Rubio and Shabazz Muhammad are nearing a return. Mo Williams, who had a 52-point game earlier this month, could play after he missed Wednesday's game for personal reasons.

Minnesota snapped a five-game losing streak Wednesday as Martin had 21 points in his first game since missing 34 with a fractured wrist.

"We knew we were getting better and when we got the win that gave us motivation to keep working and showed us that we are going the right way," said Gorgui Dieng, who added 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Young finished with 16 points against his old team and Dieng scored 15 while pulling down 16 boards in an 85-77 loss Dec. 3 when the 76ers avoided a record-tying 0-18 start.

Michael Carter-Williams finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in that contest. He had 14 points, 10 assists and nine boards Wednesday after missing one game due to an upper-respiratory infection as the 76ers (9-37) ended a six-game slide with an 89-69 home win over Detroit.

"His presence on the court and (his) size ... that's a special quality for a young point guard," coach Brett Brown told the team's official website.

The 76ers, averaging a league-low 89.5 points, haven't scored 100 in their last 23 games. They've likely lost leading scorer Tony Wroten for the season as the guard plans to undergo surgery on his partially torn ACL.

Minnesota ranks near the bottom of the league with 107.0 points allowed per game but has given up 98.4 in its last five.

Philadelphia seeks back-to-back home victories for the first time since winning its first two there last season. However, it has dropped the last two visits from the Wolves by a combined 48 points.
