KEY GAME INFORMATION
DETROIT: GUARDS: New head coach Stan Van Gundy's system is perfect for BRANDON JENNINGS, as it is heavy on high pick-and-rolls, which is where Jennings is most dangerous. He'll never be an efficient scorer . . . Detroit gave a good chunk of change to JODIE MEEKS, so he's likely to start as a spot-up shooter when he returns from a back injury in January . . . A Tskitishvili Award-winner as one of the stars of Summer League, KENTAVIOUS CALDWELL-POPE has a shot to carve out sixth-man minutes . . . After a mini-breakout with Chicago, D.J. AUGUSTIN is the insurance policy behind Jennings. He's also a great fit for Van Gundy's system . . . WILL BYNUM has been downright solid with the second unit, but he'll have to play his way back into the rotation . . . This is a redshirt season for SPENCER DINWIDDIE as he comes back from a torn ACL. FORWARDS: They'll keep shopping JOSH SMITH, who is miscast as a 3 on this roster . . . KYLE SINGLER will continue to see solid part-time minutes. He can play both wing spots and has become a good enough threat on corner threes . . . CARON BUTLER joins a crowded frontcourt. He's evolved into a three-point specialist in the latter part of his career . . . Van Gundy is a JONAS JEREBKO believer. The stretch-4 fell out of favor the past two seasons, but he has a chance to earn a big role off the bench . . . CARTIER MARTIN gives them another athletic wing who can shoot the three . . . Euro import LUIGI DATOME was a big disappointment last season. He'll have a tough time breaking into this rotation . . . TONY MITCHELL might be looking at another year in the D-League . . . GREG MONROE is an everyday double-double threat. He'll fill the stat sheet as he plays for a contract for next season. CENTERS: ANDRE DRUMMOND is a monster on the boards with Defensive Player of the Year upside once he improves in space. Offensively, he can dunk but not much else . . . AARON GRAY is here to fill out the roster once he's cleared to return from his heart problems.
PHILADELPHIA: GUARDS: MICHAEL CARTER-WILLIAMS wasn't the most legit Rookie of the Year, but he had his moments. He should be a little more efficient in his second season, and Philly certainly doesn't have a better alternative at the point. A shoulder injury will likely keep him sidelined for the first three weeks of the upcoming season . . . TONY WROTEN makes some highlight-reel plays and will likely start at the 2. He's too erratic to be in the rotation for a playoff team . . . As for the rest of the backcourt, ELLIOT WILLIAMS is looking to revive his career, and he's no worse than James Anderson and Hollis Thompson, who were starting for this team last season . . . Injuries have all but ended JASON RICHARDSON's career. He's on the final year of his deal, and might not play in 2014-15 after suffering a stress fracture to his right foot in late October . . . ALEXEY SHVED could play some quality minutes at both guard spots for this team. FORWARDS: The 2014 draft was deep, allowing Philly to land a first-round value in second-rounder K.J. McDANIELS. He's certainly better than anyone the Sixers trotted out at the 3-spot last season . . . HOLLIS THOMPSON could keep a starting job warm again . . . Another second-rounder, JERAMI GRANT, could play his way into the rotation. He's talented, but he's also something of a 'tweener, and like most Syracuse guys sitting in a 2-3 zone, Grant never learned how to e-on-one defense . . . ARNETT MOULTRIE has been something of a problem child in Philly, but he's good enough to make this rotation if he turns it around effort-wise . . . LUC RICHARD MBAH a MOUTE is here as a mentor for Joel Embiid. CENTERS: NERLENS NOEL is ready to make his debut. His collegiate rates suggest he'll rebound and block shots. The question marks are durability, functional strength and offensive game. He'll get to learn on the fly . . . JOEL EMBIID's foot problems will keep him out until at least midseason, and the Sixers will certainly play it safe with him. On raw talent, he's a future star. The questions are durability, and whether he can co-exist with Noel.

*Pistons-76ers Preview* =======================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Detroit (17-28) at Philadelphia (8-37), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Detroit Pistons faced two of the Eastern Conference's top five teams in the beginning of leading scorer Brandon Jennings' lengthy absence and the results have been predictable.

The short-handed Pistons could have a better chance against a Philadelphia 76ers team that's also missing its top scorer and will try to avoid a fourth consecutive loss in Wednesday night's visit to the Wells Fargo Center.

Detroit (17-29) lost Jennings for the season because of a ruptured left Achilles he suffered in a 101-86 loss in Milwaukee on Saturday. The Pistons have kept it close in their first two games without him but have lost both - to Toronto and Cleveland - by a combined 12 points.

"We've got good enough players to win," coach Stan Van Gundy said after a 103-95 defeat to the Cavaliers on Tuesday. "We had good enough players in there tonight to win. We just needed to do a couple of things better, and we're not going to come in here after every loss now and talk about Brandon's effect on it - at least I'm not."

Van Gundy's team has given up an average of 109.0 points in the last four games after yielding 95.9 in the previous 14. Detroit won 11 of those 14 games and took a 107-89 victory over Philadelphia (8-37) on Jan. 17.

Kyle Singler's 20 points led six players in double figures. Singler also matched a season high with 21 points in a 108-101 overtime loss to the 76ers on Dec. 6.

That was Philadelphia's second win in three games but the 76ers have lost six in a row heading into this matchup with the last two defeats by a combined 43 points. Philadelphia shot 34.6 percent in a 99-74 loss in New Orleans on Monday and has been held under 39.0 percent in five consecutive games, its longest streak since Dec. 19-28, 1997.

Michael Carter-Williams missed the latest game due to an upper respiratory infection and is questionable for this one. Tony Wroten, averaging a team-best 16.9 points and 5.2 assists, is out indefinitely because of a partially torn right ACL.

"I don't think there's anybody else that could do what (Wroten) did," coach Brett Brown told the team's official website. "He was such a kamikaze, attacking, fearless, competitive player that the city just fell in love with.

"As a team, we have to take what he brought us in terms of speed and pushing the ball and remember that's who we are."

Carter-Williams had 20 points and 15 assists - one shy of matching his career high - in the overtime win against Detroit in December. Wroten missed both of this season's matchups due to knee injuries, including his current one.

Robert Covington had a career-high 25 points Dec. 6 but was held to nine while starting in the loss to the Pistons earlier this month.

Philadelphia has won four of the past six home matchups with Detroit. Carter-Williams had 21 points in a 123-98 victory March 29 that ended an NBA record-tying 26-game losing streak.

The Pistons have dropped three straight on the road, one shy of tying a season high.

Because of the winter storm in the Northeast, the 76ers chose to stay an extra night in New Orleans.
