| | | CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: LANCE STEPHENSON started chucking and padding stats after missing the All-Star team last season, fueling Indiana's collapse. He's a potentially solid role player, but if he tries to be the alpha for the Hornets, it could be a long season . . . KEMBA WALKER has become a solid playmaker, though he'll lose some touches while playing alongside Stephenson . . . The Hornets seem to be done with GERALD HENDERSON, who will stay in the rotation, but see a reduced role with all the Hornets' offseason acquisitions . . . GARY NEAL can play both guard spots as a high-scoring sixth man . . . P.J. HAIRSTON needs to stay out of trouble off the court if he's to have any chance of becoming a three-point specialist off the bench . . . BRIAN ROBERTS steps in as a No. 3 point guard. FORWARDS: Charlotte reloaded in the frontcourt, but MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST will likely claim a starting job due to his defense. It's probably time to accept that MKG will never have much of an offensive game . . . CODY ZELLER will have every opportunity to grab a starting job early on. Unfortunately, his inability to score in traffic limits his effectiveness . . . MARVIN WILLIAMS will see major minutes at both forward spots. He's a capable defender who has added a three-point shot to his repertoire . . . He's still a teenager, so he may not carve out major minutes this year, but NOAH VONLEH has by far the most upside among their 4's and 5's. He's a potentially elite stretch-4 . . . JEFF TAYLOR's Achilles is close to 100 percent. He has a shot to re-claim a rotation spot. CENTERS: AL JEFFERSON is a flawed player, but he gives Charlotte exactly what the team is looking for: A low-post threat on the offensive end of the court. Like Walker, he'll also suffer a bit with Stephenson coming in, but he's still the focal point of this offense . . . He's not quite a bust because he can defend, but BISMACK BIYOMBO hasn't shown any semblance of an offensive game. | | PHILADELPHIA: GUARDS: MICHAEL CARTER-WILLIAMS wasn't the most legit Rookie of the Year, but he had his moments. He should be a little more efficient in his second season, and Philly certainly doesn't have a better alternative at the point. A shoulder injury will likely keep him sidelined for the first three weeks of the upcoming season . . . TONY WROTEN makes some highlight-reel plays and will likely start at the 2. He's too erratic to be in the rotation for a playoff team . . . As for the rest of the backcourt, ELLIOT WILLIAMS is looking to revive his career, and he's no worse than James Anderson and Hollis Thompson, who were starting for this team last season . . . Injuries have all but ended JASON RICHARDSON's career. He's on the final year of his deal, and might not play in 2014-15 after suffering a stress fracture to his right foot in late October . . . ALEXEY SHVED could play some quality minutes at both guard spots for this team. FORWARDS: The 2014 draft was deep, allowing Philly to land a first-round value in second-rounder K.J. McDANIELS. He's certainly better than anyone the Sixers trotted out at the 3-spot last season . . . HOLLIS THOMPSON could keep a starting job warm again . . . Another second-rounder, JERAMI GRANT, could play his way into the rotation. He's talented, but he's also something of a 'tweener, and like most Syracuse guys sitting in a 2-3 zone, Grant never learned how to e-on-one defense . . . ARNETT MOULTRIE has been something of a problem child in Philly, but he's good enough to make this rotation if he turns it around effort-wise . . . LUC RICHARD MBAH a MOUTE is here as a mentor for Joel Embiid. CENTERS: NERLENS NOEL is ready to make his debut. His collegiate rates suggest he'll rebound and block shots. The question marks are durability, functional strength and offensive game. He'll get to learn on the fly . . . JOEL EMBIID's foot problems will keep him out until at least midseason, and the Sixers will certainly play it safe with him. On raw talent, he's a future star. The questions are durability, and whether he can co-exist with Noel. |

*Hornets-76ers Preview* =======================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer
Charlotte (6-19) at Philadelphia (2-22), 7:00 p.m. EDT
Lance Stephenson's disappointing start has led to rumors that the Charlotte Hornets already are trying to move him in the first season of a lucrative contract.
He can't do much to prove owner Michael Jordan's bold move to sign him wasn't a mistake while he's sidelined.
Stephenson is doubtful to play Friday night as the Hornets visit the Philadelphia 76ers with both clubs looking to end four-game losing streaks.
After averaging career highs of 13.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists while shooting a career-best 49.1 percent with Indiana last season, Stephenson was pursued by Jordan in free agency and signed a three-year, $27 million deal.
The fifth-year guard hasn't lived up to expectations, though, averaging 10.2 points while shooting 38.6 percent. He's often been benched down the stretch of close games by coach Steve Clifford, and Jordan reportedly has been shopping Stephenson around the league.
Stephenson had seven points in Wednesday's 111-106 loss to Phoenix and suffered what the Hornets are calling a pelvic strain.
Charlotte (6-19) has had its issues outside of Stephenson and has dropped 14 of 16. It led for most of the game against Phoenix but was outscored 28-19 in the fourth quarter.
Al Jefferson had 28 points and 10 rebounds, while Kemba Walker added 27 and seven assists with zero turnovers. Jefferson had 22 points combined over his previous two, and Walker was pleased to see the Hornets get the ball inside to their big man.
"We've got to get back to that," Walker said. "Getting Al back in rhythm, playing through him - he did a great job."
Charlotte had seven turnovers and leads the league with 11.0 per game. That type of efficiency gives Walker the sense that the Hornets can get back on track.
"It's been rough for us, but we know we have a really good team," Walker said. "We just need to learn how to win."
The same goes for the young 76ers (2-22), who blew an 18-point lead in the final eight minutes of Saturday's 120-115 overtime loss to Memphis before falling 105-87 to Boston on Monday.
Both losses came at home, where Philadelphia is 0-13 and closing in on the 1993-94 Dallas club that set an NBA record with 19 home losses to begin the season.
Tony Wroten is the Sixers' leading scorer at 16.5 points per game, but he was held scoreless and had four turnovers Monday.
"It's a fact that you do lay an egg from time to time in the NBA over 82 games, and we laid an egg," coach Brett Brown said. "It was the first time for me personally in a while where you're trying to search for answers and I didn't have any.
"We can't afford to have those types of letdowns."
The major bright spot was rookie Nerlens Noel, who scored a season-best 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Noel totaled 12 points and went 4 of 19 from the field over his previous three games.
"I was able to be more active and contribute to my team," Noel said. "I've been working and continuing to stay confident. As this season goes along, I'll continue to keep working and finding my open spots and continue to progress."
Jefferson had 29 points and 12 rebounds in a 111-105 win over the 76ers in the last meeting April 12. Charlotte ended a six-game skid in Philadelphia 10 days earlier.
